Turbo Tax Deluxe Complete for 1998
By: Marty Kovacs mkovacs@ibm.net
I have TurboTax Deluxe Complete for Tax Year 1998. I am running OS/2 Warp 4 at FP
6 on a Cyrix 6X86 166 with 64 Mb of RAM with a Diamond Stealth 64 video card and
Acer 32x CDROM.
Installation:
The installation went very smoothly as opposed to when I installed Quicken Ver 6.
( Which required several runs through the installation program to complete the installation).
The only hitch I had is when it came time register it I could not connect to the
internet using the Turbo Tax software. In order to register the program I had to
install TTAX on my windows 95 system ( Intuit if you are reading this be assured
the win 95 system is in my home office, right behind be now, and no one else has
access to the program to use it) to register. I had thought that the winsock.dll
provided with OS/2 was the culprit but I was able to connect using the OS/2 dialer
and then ping few sites using a windows ping program so that is not the problem.
I have not yet contacted Intuit about this.
BTW I have this same problem with Quicken but since I don't need the internet
feature I have not pursued this either. I did call Intuit about this (over a year
ago) and as soon as I mentioned that I was using OS/2 they said they don't support
the win/os2 installation of Quicken. To be honest I am not that overly concerned
about this but I will continue to pursue the problem on and off.
Running Turbo Tax 98:
As for the program itself I have had no problems using it. I run it in a window
rather the full screen session. It starts ok with no hiccups or other glitches.
I have been entering some of the data for my taxes. As usual Intuit has changed
the the interview part of the program to make the data input process easier to understand.
The version I have also includes the video presentations (from off the CDROM) from
the experts on various subjects. The few that I watched ran very smoothly with only
a short (less then a second) interruption over a 1 minute video. The program supports
the paperless IRS filing experiment. I received the digital signature numbers for
my wife and myself from the IRS so I will use that this year.
I have used Turbo Tax 98 on an off over the past few weeks and have not experienced
any crashes or unusual functioning of the program. I have been using TTAX for almost
as long as it has been around (in the DOS version originally) and have found it
to be a very stable program and as user friendly as a tax preparation program can
be.
My only fear is that next year they may not offer it for win 3.1. This is what
they did for Quicken; the last release only would run under win95/98. Intuit states
they will be providing a patch for Quicken for y2k for the win 3.1 version but no
more upgrades. :-(
