Epson Inkjet Printer Model Number and OS/2 Driver Version Cross Reference

Epson Driver Information

There are at least five existing drivers for the various models of Epson Inkjet printers. These include IBM's own OMNI printer driver support; two beta drivers done by Epson Germany; the EPOMNI driver by Epson Japan and the recently released Epson2 driver. Which drivers support which models has always been a point of some confusion. Following is a description of each driver and a set of cross reference tables showing which printers are known to support which printer models.

The IBM Omni Driver

The printer model numbers the Omni Driver supports were obtained by pretending to install a new printer driver and then reviewing the list of supported printers. This is the standard printer driver that comes with OS/2 and includes support for many printer brands besides Epson. It continues to receive periodic updates by IBM.

The Epson Germany 1.020 Driver

According to Mark Dodel, "Like the 1.011 driver this driver has 1440x720DPI support for some printers, but is slower then the OMNI driver. One problem with this driver was that it only seemed to support the higher resolution in European paper sizes(A3, A1, etc). This driver never seemed to have much support from Epson Germany, and at one point Epson Germany stated they were dropping all OS/2 development. As alarming as that sounds, it seems that support was picked up by Epson Japan(see the EPOMNI driver that follows). The install asks what language support you want - English or German, with code page support for English being 437,850-853,857,860-866 and code page support for German being 437,850,852,853,857,861,865."

While Bruce LaZerte added "The *OLD* german driver (EPSONPRT) was great for photos but slow and had some bugs. Originally you had to buy it on CDROM, but then they stopped working on it and gave it away free. I've stopped using it too."

The Epson Japan EPOMNI Driver

According to Bruce LaZerte "The best driver is EPOMNI which came out about a year and a half ago. It's great and reasonably fast for photos and text. It's about as good as the Winxx driver, has all the nozzle clearing and adjustment utilities etc. This one I use all the time."

And about this driver Mark Dodel states "Though somewhat limited in printer models supported this driver is faster then the Epson Germany drivers, and adds some print head alignment and cleaning utilities in the properties notebook. It also supports 1440x720DPI resolution (apparently in all paper sizes). Actual driver settings are determined by Mode selected(economy,Text/Graph, Photo and Advanced Photo) and Media Type(varies based on Mode but includes Plain Paper, Inkjet Transparencies, Photo Quality Glossy paper, Photo Paper, and Photo Quality Inkjet paper) (This driver reports itself as Driver Version 30.544."
