POSSI Meeting Feb 12 !!!!

At the February meeting of the Phoenix OS/2 Society, we'll celebrate OS/2 and demonstrate how the operating system is successfully running a small business. LUMATURE, in Scottsdale, will open its doors -- including the door to the computer room! See firsthand every aspect of this business runs on networked computers using OS/2.

Lumature, a lighting and furniture store, has been using OS/2 as its only operating system since 1994. Every business function is performed by OS/2 Warp 4 workstations on a network powered by WSeB servers.

When and where: The store is located at 15620 North Scottsdale Rd, north of Greenway, on the west side of the street. Although the LUMATURE showroom closes to the public at 6:00pm, the doors will be open to members of the user group (and operating-system curious visitors!); staff will demonstrate and answer questions.

Want more detail? Hardware and OS/2 software used by Lumature include:

* WISEMANAGER from Serenity Systems, used to remote boot the diskless IBM NetStations from a WSeB RIPL server.
* SMACK! is used to print custom showroom price tags and labels.
* CLEARLOOK word processing.
* PMFAX (network version) has been in daily use for many years.
* INJOY FIREWALL for Internet access.
* PMMAIL E-mail client.
* INETMAIL E-mail server.
* DOMINO GOwebSERVER run http://www.lumature.com
* SMARTSUITE and STAROFFICE are used to open documents received in almost any format.
* Accounting software is 16-bit DOS, run in a VDM.
* HOUSE/2 home automation software.

Experience how every light fixture, table lamp, and wall light in the showroom is controlled from 'virtual' switches created on showroom workstation screens. Using the HOUSE/2, every display fixture can be turned ON, OFF, or DIMMED from the showroom computers. Every light can be addressed individually or as a member of a group. Using an ELO-TOUCH touchscreen monitor in the showroom (with OS/2 drivers) it is very easy to control the hundreds of light fixtures in the store.

Philadelphia OS/2 Mtg: Wed, Jan 23rd

PHILADELPHIA OS/2 USER GROUP
http://www.phillyos2.org

The Philadelphia OS/2 User Group invites all interested computer users to attend the January monthly meeting:

. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2002 7:00 - 10:00 PM
. The Episcopal Academy, 376 N. Latches Lane, Merion, PA

*** JANUARY 23rd MEETING AGENDA ***
-- Bart van Leeuwen's Poor Man's PDF --

Happy New Year to all! We send our best wishes for the new year to all OS/2 users, with the hope that they will continue to use and enjoy their reliable OS/2 systems, of whatever vintage, during this new year 2002 and on into the foreseeable future.

News of the recent demise of the New York City OS/2 User Group was received here with great sorrow. A special invitation is extended to all former NYC OS/2 members and other OS/2 users in the NYC metro area to affiliate with the Philadelphia OS/2 UG by subscribing to our 2 list servers: the POSEIDON announcement list and the PHILLYOS2 2-way discussion list. Interested folks should send an email to llavins@worldnet.att.net.

The January meeting will feature a presentation/demonstration by Larry of Poor Man's PDF, a rather remarkable program authored by Bart van Leeuwen, an OS/2 user/developer in Belgium. PMPDF is all the more remarkable because it's only 20 lines of code.

PMPDF brings the capabilities of Adobe Acrobat Distiller to the OS/2 platform by the use of GhostScript. PMPDF enables the easy and simple creation of .PDF files from OS/2 applications which support standard OS/2 PM printer interface, such as Netscape and Warpzilla Web browsers, IBM Works, Lotus Smartsuite, etc. These .PDF files may then be read and printed by the Acrobat Reader.

PMPDF may be downloaded from ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/pmpdf. Special install instructions will be discussed at the meeting.

Other agenda items include U/G business items, OS/2 news, new releases, Q&A session and raffles. The usual free refreshments will also be available.

Mark the date and time: Wednesday, January 23rd, at 7:00pm. OS/2 meetings are open and free for OS/2 users, their guests and others interested in learning about OS/2 and associated technologies. We have a very full agenda, so also please try to be on time promptly by 7:00pm.

Further information, directions to Episcopal Academy, and other useful information about the OS/2 U/G activities may be found on our web site at http://www.phillyos2.org or contact U/G Leader Larry Lavins: llavins@worldnet.att.net, or phone (215) 878-9609. - -

SCOUG Meeting January 19: APL2 and AWK

The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) will be next Saturday, January 19, 2002 at 9:00 AM PST, at Regal Lanes in Orange, 1485 N. Tustin Ave.

APL2 and AWK

APL (A Programming Language) has been described as the mother of all array-based numerical programs. The OS/2 version - APL2 - has extensive numerical capabilites, and SCOUG member Zdenek (Denny) Jizba will tell us all about them. Denny is a PhD geophysicist who did research for many years at Chevron, and in that capacity he became quite an expert in APL. We'll get a short summary of the current state of usage of APL and its' dialects. We'll also learn about APL's main features and see some demos. Should be interesting and informative for math fanatics and novices alike.

There's always time for Q&A, raffle, and free donuts and coffee. Then SIG-wise, we'll continue with Greg Smith who will talk about AWK as a quick scripting language for OS/2. Start the new year out right by attending SCOUG's first meeting of 2002!

OS/2 Help Desk and Networking SIG, February 3rd, 2002, 2 PM PST, Chapman University in Orange:

Should you be in need of technical assistance, take your problem - and your system - to the in-person OS/2 Help Desk that's held once a month at Chapman University. SCOUG volunteers will help you work it all out.

While you're at the in-person Help Desk, find out what the Networking SIG is doing. If networking isn't part of your current strategy, it will be eventually. The SIG meets at the same time and place, and pursues issues related to network configurations and problem solutions.

How to get to Regal Lanes:

From the 55 freeway, exit Katella Ave. heading west. Turn right (north) at the first major intersection onto Tustin Ave. At the next signal you'll find Regal Lanes on your right. It's across from the Toyota of Orange dealership.

There's lots of parking on the south side of the building. Enter from the east entrance of the building (farthest from Tustin Ave.), not the main (front) entrance to the facility. Take the stairs to the 2nd floor; meeting rooms (and restrooms) will be on your left.

Handicapped access is via an elevator by the front door.

OR: Go to http://www.scoug.com/directions.html; there is a map to Regal Lanes, plus a more detailed map & driving directions from Yahoo!

How to get to Chapman University:

There are two ways to get directions:
1) Go to http://www.scoug.com/warpexpowest/sitemap.html
2) Go to http://www.mapquest.com/ and enter the address 400 N. Center Street, Orange, CA.

You can park in any of the University lots for free on Sundays, but if you part on the street, watch the signs carefully or else risk getting a parking ticket.

Come to Hashinger Hall Science Building, room 203. It's on the second floor and there's an elevator for you to bring up your equipment.

Come and join us!

WarpDoctor mtg Sunday January 6, 2002 @ 4:00p ET -- 21:00 GMT

There will be a WarpDoctor meeting on Sunday, January 6, 2002 at 4:00 EST (21:00 GMT).

Please note the new time.

The time has been changed from 2:00p to 4:00p on a trial basis, specifically because it was thought this might be more convenient for OS/2 users on the west coast. If this affects you, then please attend at least ONCE during the month of January to register your approval of this new time. The atmosphere of the Warpdoctor group has improved dramatically in the past six months, but the project is still very short of people. If you can spare two hours a week on Sunday afternoon, then WE NEED YOU.
