Xine RC2 Released
The Xine MCD (Media Control Device) had been updated by Darwin O'Connor,
who is porting it from Unix. RC2 has been released, and is available at:
http://doconnor.reamined.on.ca/xine/xinerc2.zip
If you already installed the previous version, an update to the current
level is available here:
http://doconnor.reamined.on.ca/xine/xineupd.zip
OS/2 source is available here:
http://doconnor.reamined.on.ca/xine/xinerc2src.zip
>From the README:
Xine is a video player. It was originally written for Linux and supports
many formats, from MP3 audio to DVDs. It is considered one of the two
best video players for Linux. In time, I hope all formats supported by
Linux will be supported by xine.
Xine usually comes as a stand alone player. xine MCD is a special version
that installs as part of the OS/2 Multimedia system so that most
applications that played video files through MMOS/2 before can be used to
play videos through xine.

VCDgear on OS/2, someone to compile?
BigWarpGuy contacted the author of VCDGear, a very popular, multiplatform

20040123 kernels
Yet another new set of kernels for OS/2 on IBM's Testcase FTP server
today. Download from ftp://testcase.boulder.ibm.com/ps/fromibm/os2/
"This contains fixes since xr_e002/xr_m015/mcp/acp. Important note: If you
use the OS/2 SES facility, you need a new sesdd32.sys dated April 2001 or
later to use this kernel. Also, a matching dump formatter (df_ret.exe),
provided separately, is required, if you want to analyze a dump from this
kernel. Finally, note that os2ldr is only required for the >64mb memory
detection mentioned below."
As always these are not officially supported by IBM unless they tell you
to use them.
**** Please send any followup to comp.os.os2.bugs on usenet. ****
Also note that files are only on IBM's testcase for 2-3 days, so if you
want to try these get them now. Make certain you back up any files
replaced and don't try these on a production system. Read any readme file
before applying any changes. If your system is working well, and you have
no problems addressed by these updates, do yourself a favour and don't
mess with this. You have been warned.
The UNI and SMP files are for WSeB/ACP/eCS Pro (SMP kernel) and the W4
files are for post FP15/MCP versions, including eComStation. Only use the
SMP kernel on a machine with more then one CPU.]
From the readme file:
Fixes to problems that exist in released code:
20040123 14.097e
- fix bad cFH count in DosQuerySysState/QProcStatus with level=0
- attempt to fix intermittent trap 000e resulting from highmem loadin
in 116 kernel

Vladest: Added command line mixer UNIMIX
Vladest: Updates to latest ALSA level
Web site: http://os2.kiev.ua/en/uniaud.php
"About the UniAud project
Purpose
The aim of the UniAud project is the creation of universal audio driver
based on ALSA project. Maintainers do NOT undertake a commitment to add
new cards that are lacking support in ALSA project, but are going to
refresh UniAud with latest ALSA sources as far as possible. Bugfixes for
hardware specific code will correspond to ALSA fixes. Also, some nuances
are possible, but in most cases we are going to proceed like this. Authors
are planning to create new and unique API to make the usage of all
resources and features of modern audio cards possible. API will use
neither DART nor other exists OS/2's audio subsystems.
Project Status
The UniAud is currently undergoing development, but upon the completion of
GA releases you can download beta versions. All the work on this project
is done in our own time and is distributed under GNU licensing guidelines.
If you are aware of some new features that you would like to see
implemented, or if you just would like to accelerate development you can
always make a financial contribution or donation to UniAud on Mensys. To
find out how you can help the UniAud Team please mail us at
ua2@os2.kiev.ua.
Current Features
* PCI sound cards support (see. soundcards page)
* Digital Controllers support (for AC'97 codec)
* AC'97 codecs support
* auto detect of installed audio card"

Analyzing the causes with F/X Communications
In November 7, 2003, this mail list carried a post entitled "InJoy
Firewall and Dialer release illegal use of Dynamic Windows" which
originally was posted in OS2WORLD.COM
In the interest of fairness I am posting of the following information to
update the situation.
First, the original post in OS2WORLD.COM appears to have been removed.
Second, Eugene Gorbunoff, editor of ecomstation.ru, who earlier posted the
same article, has apologized for doing so in the following post, dated 14
January 2004. http://en.ecomstation.ru/commentnews.php?id=967
Analyzing the causes with F/X Communications
------------------------------------------------------------
Some months ago the reputation of the company F/X Communications was
severely damaged by a fired developer. The developer was fired almost a
year ago and several reliable witnesses have since then rejected his
story. In spite of the damage, F/X Communications continues its business
and they have initiated a law-suit in the U.S against the developer.
F/X Communications has been working on the OS/2 market for more than 8
years and continues to provide the OS/2 community with quality software
and support. The reputation of F/X may be confirmed by its developers,
also actual russian developers, and many F/X business partners and
customers.
The circumstances however show that work over the Internet requires
excessive responsibility from both sides (both employer and employee).
F/X Communications is interested in analyzing the causes of the problems
and together with its employees it has listed some of the possible
reasons why a normal work flow hasn't always been possible. These problems
are based on actual examples and apply to all countries wherever you work
from:
* Developers disappearing for long periods, sometimes even without
notifying the company. Examples include military service, illness,
problems in the family and even jail.
* Slow and sometimes very unreliable (dial-up) Internet access
combined with constant loss of electricity (especially in ex-USSR
countries).
* A different mentality and sometimes a very different work-ethics.
* Self-taught programmers that aren't always capable of working
professionally.
* Difficulties with managing employees, since the boss can't see what
employees are actually doing.
* Excuses about family, like the famous "sick grandmother".
* Poor hardware situations and difficulties with sending test
equipment back and forth.
* Poor English capabilities and inability or unwillingness to document
the work.
* Lack of team-spirit, if the developers and the manager can never
meet in person.
* More...
Please, be careful with taking a job over the Internet if you expect such
problems to happen (this relates to work for any company).
One might think that part of these problems can't be controlled by the
developer and use that as an excuse, but real-world business doesn't care
about that and such problems shouldn't be allowed to continue forever.
Developers should work actively to solve such problems or it would be
better to find a local job.
Eugene Gorbunoff (the editor of eComStation.Ru) apologizes for posting
self-willed conclusions of the original message based on declarations of
one side only.
