This week's edition of Focus on OS/2 is now online.
Topic: LOTUS 1-2-3 REVIEWED
Lotus 1-2-3 seems to have most of the new enhancements and features. Find out
what they are, and if they make the SmartSuite Upgrade worth what Lotus/IBM is charging
for it.

Some of you may have noticed that I have had my head down for a while... (Not
too visible as opposed to sad.)
I recently went in to get my throat checked and in the process found out that
I have diabetes. I now have to track my blood sugar and the doc even wants to know
what I eat. I did a search for software to help track this information and as you
may well know, I saw nothing for OS/2. A win solution doesn't fit for me as I do
not want to reboot to do this. I'm staying with what I know...
I did find a template that I could use in 123 but it's kinda' "heavy"
for something I just want to use to spot a number or meal info into three or four
times a day. Like any good blue-blooded OS/2 user, I began a project to make it
work for me. I would like to ask if there are any others out there that have a need
for something like this. I would like to make it available for testing, feedback
and use. Is this something we need? Here are the capabilities so far...
1) Track Bg readings pre/post-breakfast, pre/post-lunch, pre/post-dinner, pre/post-snacks,
bedtime, fasting and "other".
2) Show daily average of readings.
3) Track weight.
4) Track meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks) and their "carb"
values.
5) Show daily total "carbs"
6) Graph "All" Bg values or "Daily average"
7) Print Bg or meal reports and print graphs.
I would like to go a bit further with this program and would like to make a couple
more points.
1) I would like to have more control over some or the reports and am looking
for a copy of VisPro Reports to aid in that. VisPro Reports isn't especially cheap
and I'd rather not spend much on something I will not be looking to get a return
on. If you have a copy you are willing to sell reasonably please contact me.
2) The program data is currently being housed in a database that is written without
the aid of a database driver. This makes it load instantly for now but when the
db gets larger I am afraid it will bog down. So far I have tested it with a years
worth of data and it took about 7 secs to load and 10 secs to save. (that still
beats the heck out of SmartSuite)
There is also the future consideration of deeper relationships than are currently
being implemented. If you know of a reasonable way or of a product to do a good
database that will be small, fast and any user can use the engine without having
to pay more for it, please let me know.
3) Being quite new to the glucometer game, I don't know a whole lot about it
but I believe there are serial cable hookups and software for downloading the data
from the glucometer. I would like to get this working but I can make no promises.
(I think I have an OS/2 buddy that may be able to give a few pointers though) :-)
As I understand it, many glucometers are of the Boehringer Mannheim type and
have a common interface(?) so maybe we can at least get the basics working.
If you, your family or friends have to track blood sugar and are looking for
an OS/2 solution, please contact me. I should also mention that if we could get
insurance to pay for something like this, that would be great but that is unlikely
and I have no intention of charging individuals for it otherwise. Outside of my
my own use, my main motivation is the hope that it will help someone else that may
have a need.

btw: My throat? It is not serious but I am having a small surgery on monday and
would appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

Jad the fast Java class decompiler is now available on OS/2 Check out:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bridge/8617/jad.html
I have used Jad for recovering classes I can't find the source to and have found
it very useful and cheap. Its free. Pavel Kouznetsov has done a very good job with
Jad show him OS/2 users are just as keen to use Jad as other platforms.
We are getting ready to launch an "Internet Enabled", "ready for
e.business" Managed Client product. We would like to discuss this opportunity
with service providers who have OS/2 and Warp Server skills.
The base product will feature Warp Server for e.biz and Lotus Domino R5. The
current Managed Client software will include browser access to Domino, StarOffice,
and Netscape or other Internet Suite.
These products provide cross platform support (Windows, OS/2, and Linux) though
our current Managed Client is an OS/2 system ... support for the other clients is
available from the server.
This software package offers general business users an office suite, world class
software for collaboration and communication, calendaring and scheduling, web application
development and serving, web publishing, messaging and email through Domino, Notes
Databases, Team Rooms, and Notes applications are all part of the base package.
We need skilled, service oriented people to implement these solutions with users,
especially small and medium businesses.
Please send questions and comments to Bob St.John at:
BStJohn@Serenity-Systems.com
Serenity Systems is pleased to announce an agreement in principal with Mensys
http://www.mensys.nl for the manufacture and
distribution of Serenity Systems Products in Europe. Focus will be on the CTI WiseTalker
products, including WiseTalker Database Server with DB2, and WiseTalker Voice Mail
Mensys will also be reselling Managed Client products, including WiseManager,
with the recently announced support for Lotus Dominon and Notes.
In addition to reselling to users, Mensys and Serenity Systems will be developing
a channel of service oriented consultants in UK, Spain, France, BeNeLux, the Nordics,
Germany and Austria.
Channel Partners will focus on service opportunities with WiseTalker and "subscription"
computing. More information can be obtained from Joachim Benjamins Joachim@Mensys.nl

Here is some more information about WinDriver. This email I received from Arie
Tal at KRFtech:
"Thank you for your interest in WinDriver.
The OS/2 version of WinDriver will be ready in a short while (probably two weeks).
This will still be a beta version but it will be the last one before release.
If you need your driver to run on both OS/2 and 9x, WinDriver will be your best
solution as you will be able to run the same hardware access code in both operating
systems (just use the appropriate kernel module and recompile).
In regard to pricing - The Windows 9x version is only $899 while the OS/2 support
has not been officially priced (I estimate its price will be around $5k-$6k).
If you are an academic institute - and you need WinDriver for non commercial
uses, You may enjoy a 50%(!) discount with one restriction - a pop up message will
appear at each first use of WinDriver saying that it is a non distributable academic
version.
The license will also allow your students to use WinDriver for their projects
thus concentrate in their applications and hardware instead of wasting time learning
the OS internals and API (DDK) to write a driver.
Please feel free to contact me with any question you may have. I will send you
an email once the OS/2 version is released.
Please feel free to contact me with any question you may have. I will send you
an email once the OS/2 version is released.
Thanks and regards,

Maybe the OS/2 pricing causes some headaches.
WinDriver is an aplication to build device drivers. WinDriver is available (soon)
for OS/2, Microsoft Windows, Solaris, and Linux.
Ask for the beta, so KRFtech can be sure that there is demand for the OS/2 version.
Today (March 3rd, 2000), Sander (van Leeuwen?) of the ODIN M.A.D. team (Management,
Administration, Decision-making) wrote that he believes the ODIN development team
is just one day away from a working Quake 3 / Voodoo 2 3D conversion from Win32
to OS/2.
He wrote, in part:
If tomorrow's daily build can be compiled without problems, then you'll be able
to run and play Quake 3 if you own a Voodoo 2 3D card. (voodoo 1 untested)
Reportedly audio and network support are not yet working but may be possible
in the future.
Odin is the name of the project and software that allows users to run Win32 (Windows
95 and Windows NT) applications in OS/2 Warp operating system natively, almost as
if they were intended to be OS/2 applications in the first place. It also makes
porting from Win32 to OS/2 easier by providing a Win32 API implementation in OS/2:
the Odin32 API.

GSView 2.8 for OS/2 as well as Aladdin Ghostscript 6.0 are available at:
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/
GSView is the graphical interface for the Aladdin Ghostscript PostScript interpreter.
These programs have been referred to elsewhere are "the best freeware ever."
Retrocade for OS/2 Alpha 2 is available for download.
Retrocade is a multi-arcade game emulator, similar to MAME. It supports fewer
games than MAME does (about 120 or so) but the emulation cores were designed for
SPEED! The "business" part of the code was written almost entirely in
assembly language and it shows!
In addition to the speed advantage over MAME, Retrocade offers a very attractive
and futuristic GUI of its own making its oveall package very impressive. If you're
a fan of MAME or a fan of old arcade games, give it a try!
The currently released version is *alpha* level code. Please be sure to read
the ReadMe.OS2 file before running it for the first time. It currently has graphics
and sound support, but lacks mouse and joystick support (which are coming soon).
I'm releasing this version to get early feedback, so feel free to contact me about
it.
Visit:
http://emuos2.vintagegaming.com
to download Retrocade for OS/2.
Fixed in this version:
* COMPLETE GRAPHICS OVERHAUL! All graphics glitches (Space Invaders, etc.) should
now be GONE!
* Scrolling games (1942, etc.) are now displayed correctly.
* Games that wouldn't start up due to problems with the graphics sizing are completely
fixed.
* the -16bpp command line parameter should now work (though it is not recommended
because it will slow things down and not make the games look any better).
* Should work in all 16, 24, and 32 bit per pixel screen modes, though the 24 bpp
modes are *REALLY* slow. 16 bit modes are fastest, but the 32 bit mode is quite
fast too.
A little plug-in for File Commander/2 can be downloaded from the Hobbes FTP archive.
This plug-in allows you to launch WPS objects from the File Commander. It also
contains an icon and color settings for it.

The EmTec News Reader update is available at:
ftp://ftp.us.emtec.com:21/netsuite/news46f.zip
New in this release:
*Y2K fix - retrieving list of all newsgroups as a list of new newsgroups
*Y2K fix - can not post an article due to missing Date: field, also 4 digit year
number is used in the field
*Y2K fix - incorrect sorting of messages
*trap if there are more than 65534 newsgroups on the server
*incorrect characters in file names
Also the EmTec FTP client version 5.0.7 has been released. This version is year
2000 compatable. It can be downloaded from:
ftp://ftp.us.emtec.com:21/netsuite/eftp507.zip
The version 1.2 of "Names" file utility is released.
This tool checks files on HPFS drives. It is possible to change the case of names,
revise differences between file and WPS object names and change attributes of files.
"Names" has an easy-to-use GUI interface. It can works together with
all File Managers. This version is revised for Aurora.

I have spoken to somebody at Sun/StarOffice today (the last day of CeBIT). They
tell me that they will continue to build new OS/2 Versions (including Version 5.2)
of StarOffice due to the high demand of a new OS/2 Version.
The first OS/2 Beta Version will be released shortly after Win32 and Linux Version
are GA.
I got this email from Arie Tal from KRFTech:
Hello Martin,
I would like to apologize for the delay in the release of the OS/2 version of
WinDriver. We had run into unexpected difficulties which we have just now resolved
(keep in mind we have to write a tool that will allow developers to run the same
hardware access code on all major operating systems so this has to be written carefully).
I expect we will complete the initial version by next week followed by a QA session
which will probably take a few days more.
In regard to USB in OS/2 - We will probably release a USB stack for OS/2 which
will work with WinDriver. However this is not a priority as we plan to release USB
support for NT4.0 and Windows 95 first. This means I currently can give you no estimation
of when USB for OS/2 will be ready.
I apologize for the wrong time estimation in my previous email and will notify
you as soon as the version will be ready for download.
Regards,
Arie Tal

the OS/2 version.
I need administrators to help me test WebMail/2.
WebMail/2 is a 'hotmail.com-style' system for OS/2. At the moment it's still

Their is an article about the MetaBox at:
http://www.computer-tip.de/reportagen/metabox500/index.htm
Unfortunately for us English speaking folks the article is in German. A few nice
screenshots to look at though. If you want to get a general idea of the content,
you can use Alta Vista's "Babelfish" translation utility.

MetaBox is a German "webtv" like computer that runs on OS/2.
I have updated the Screen Saver in Power Utilities to 1.2.00. The zip file only
contains the saver.exe and the readme.txt so this release requires the installation
of version 1.1.00 prior to applying this release. It is a bug fix where as on some
system the mouse pointer would disappear.

Right now, there are some multimedia extensions for OS/2 in developement, but
not many are expected yet. RealPlayer7 for example can be used soon, thanks to http://www.netlabs.org/odin/ Project Odin.
But which multimedia extensions do OS/2 users really want and need? And would OS/2
users pay for some of them?

The results of our last survey "What do you think about the announced OS/2
Warp 4 update?" can be viewed in the archieve. Over 600 people took part, and
lots of interesting comments where added over the last two weeks. See what they
voted for, and what they said.
I have added OS/2 pages to my web site. I have tried to add some interactivity,
by using imagemaps so visitors can get an idea of the real OS/2 behaviour when clicking
certain icons. Before extending the web site I would appreciate comments and suggestions
to improve it.

LBPlay was updated to version 0.07. The new features are: custom resets, changed
playlists to more generic option files, karaoke codepage support.
LBMIDI was updated to version 0.02. There's a lot of bugfixes and workarounds.
Also an optional delay in direct MPU-401 player was added for fast computers.
Timidity++ port was updated to revision 3. It is still based on version 2.8.2
but ncurses interface was added.

I received a reply to my recent WarpCast message http://www.os2ss.com/warpcast/wc4868.html
about Sun not to produce a StarOffice 5.2 for OS/2 (which was essentially only the
translation of an article of a German computer news service). Alexander Wagner a.wagner@teamos2.de spoke to a guy from Sun
at CeBIT and here's what he wrote me (and allowed me to send to WarpCast, because
the Sun guy even encouraged him to spread this information, to prevent Sun from
being bombed by letters and e-mails from angry OS/2 users):
"Yesterday I was at the fair and talked to a Sun employee, who's mainly
responsible for all the OS/2 stuff they do.
He told me that Sun really wants to open StarOffice's source. From what he said
this is supposed to happen shortly after version 5.2 is released, this means very
soon. Sun is really interested in continuing especially the OS/2 port by Netlabs
to ensure further development of StarOffice. In the beginning this will perhaps
happen as Closed Source, before StarOffice's source is opened, so that developers
from Netlabs will get the source even earlier than the rest of the world. He is
very committed himself and is interested to manage this quickly and he said that
there are already negotiations with Netlabs.
So why doesn't Sun publish a version 5.2 for OS/2? He clearly stated that this
is a problem of not enough manpower at Sun. Sun really has problems getting enough
developers, and they have a lot of plans with StarOffice. They do ports for a number
of platforms and they also work on StarPortal, which is (from what the Sun guy said)
also supposed to run on OS/2 (and every problem they get with Netscape 4.61 and
Java and cannot be solved by Sun goes directly to the OS/2 development department
at IBM (yes, it still seems to exist ;-) )). He said that for a complete OS/2 port
Sun really lacks developers.
The lack of manpower results mainly from the fact that Sun has to re-invent the
wheel for a lot of things on OS/2, because OS/2 terribly lacks quality development
tools "You know which company released a version 4.0 compiler in the state
of a 1.0 version?".
But he also said that he and a number of other people of the team are very committed
to keep StarOffice for OS/2 alive. "People even work at home in their leisure
time to solve the problems." But these version cannot be published by Sun officially,
they have to come from the OS/2 community. He's very convinced that this plan will
work. On the question: "Well, when you do it clean enough we can send version
5.2 through Odin.", he responded that this would be an option, but he and a
number of other people would prefer a native version, and that he is convinced that
this will be done. In his opinion OS/2 will be the first platform to get an Open
Source StarOffice."

We are looking for volunteer coders which hace both MMOS2/DART and TCPIP/2 skills.
Two of our important hopes on the final coding needed to quit due to a lack of time
and other things.
If you believe you can help please drop us a note at:
webmaster@warpseeme.com
(Please do not send us more emails offering for beta-testers, we appreciate the
caring and attention but we've got many of those and we WILL DO post a public note
when it comes about the time to publicly beta-test the program.)
I justed ported the http://www.uptimes.net
client software to OS/2. http://www.uptimes.net
is a web page where you can compare your system uptimes with that of other people
around the world. Currently we have 6 hosts setup on the system, with a maximum
uptime of 13 days. Lets see if we can give some of those other systems a run for
the money.
Also, I am using QSV_MS_COUNT to keep track of the uptime. If I remember correctly
this has a limit of 49 days like Windows does. If there is anyone who knows of a
better way of telling the system uptime let me know.
The only other solution I know of is to use the time and date on the swapfile.
I don't like this method for several reasons:
A) not all systems have swap files
B) this method is not entirely accurate. Please let me know if you have a solution
to the problem. And lets at least beat the windows uptimes! :)
The client is on hobbes:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/upclient2.zip
It will presumably move to:
