The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) will be next
Saturday, Mar. 18, at 9:00 AM PST.
NOTE: We have a new meeting location: we will be meeting at Eastside Christian
Schools (Heritage Campus) in Anaheim at 2528 W. La Palma Ave.
Super-fast Internet with DSL ~Elections
We are still awaiting confirmations, but at the March main meeting we expect
to have a DSL extravaganza. You'll find out all you ever wanted to know about DSL,
and what services are available to SCOUG members. This presentations promises to
be a blockbuster, and is brought to you by popular demand.
Lest you think that the program will be the only excitement, think again. March
at SCOUG means elections, and you'll have a chance to choose new board members and
officers. Be sure to be there!
After the presentation and elections, we'll have Q&A to help you with your
questions ~problems, and then a raffle. After a short break, then the Saturday SIG
meetings:
Programming SIG: Will look at using CVS and RCS for managing software development
projects with multiple contributors. The group will be using these programs to manage
the future SIG projects.
Check back here http://www.scoug.com/programming/index.html
as it gets closer to the meeting date. There will be some resources available to
you to download which you'll want to get somewhat familiar with before the meeting!
General Interest Group: We will take a stock Win95 system and actually do an
OS/2 install along with creating a maintenance partition. Time permitting, we will
also get into DSL and cable modem hookups.
Internet SIG chats happen several times each week. Join them!
(For further information, go to http://www.scoug.com/chat/index.html)
Monday, March 20, 7 PM PST meetings at Eastside Christian Schools (Heritage Campus):
The OS/2 Help Desk will have volunteers to give you hands-on assistance solving
your hardware and software problems.
The Networking SIG will be meeting at the same time/place as the Help Desk in
the new computer lab. They will continue the DSL topic of our General meeting. We
will learn about the DSL service connecting the Eastside Christian School to the
Internet, including the specifics of the DSL router that was installed. Utilizing
the new DSL line, we will configure our OS/2 clients to use the DSL connection to
the Internet. In addition, we will install and configure the InJoy Gateway product
on the SCOUG WiseManager server to provide proxy capabilities for the OS/2 clients
and learn why we would want to do this.
Thursday, March 23, 7 PM PST meeting at Eastside Christian Schools (Heritage
Campus):
The Sundial SIG will meet in the computer lab. The topic is Mesa 2 macros and
how they can make your life so much easier.
How to get to Eastside Christian Schools (Heritage Campus):
The Eastside Christian School (Heritage Campus) in Anaheim is at 2528 W. La Palma
Ave. It is on the south side of the street (about 200 ft. E of Magnolia) on the
Grace Baptist Church property. It's a 2-story office building close to La Palma
Ave. with the address of 2528 up near the roof. (It's between 2 large apartment
complexes and can be easily missed). Look for the SCOUG banner (if you are driving
eastbound on La Palma Ave.) and/or a sign with the words "New Hope Christian
Center". Turn in (south) there. Park in the front lot. For the general meeting,
go up the stairs in the middle of the building along the parking-lot side. For the
weeknight SIGs, go in at the middle on the ground floor and down the hall to your
right.
Freeway exits: (subject to change due to freeway construction on I-5 and the
91 freeways):
1) North I-5 (from central/south Orange County): the La Palma exit has re-opened.
Get off at La Palma and turn left (going west over I-5). The school/church will
be on your left side.
2) South I-5 (from Los Angeles): take the Magnolia exit and turn right going south.
Turn left on La Palma Ave; the school/church will be on your right side.
3) West 91 freeway (from the Inland Empire, etc): take the Magnolia exit and turn
left going south. Turn left on La Palma Ave; the school/church will be on your right
side.
4) East 91 freeway: take the transition to I-5 south. Stay to your right and take
the Magnolia exit. Turn right going south. Turn left on La Palma Ave; the school/church
will be on your right side.

Meeting Details:
First and explanation of the special day. As many of you may know the NYPC moved
its General Meeting to the 2nd Wednesday of the month late last year. This was because
of scheduling issues with P.S. 41, where the meetings take place. March is always
election month at NYPC and we want to give everyone the opportunity to vote at the
meeting for those who choose not to vote by mail. During our Q&A time on Thursday,
we will discuss the possibility of permanently moving the day to a different day
of the month. The NYPC General Meetings are starting to become "more diverse"
(i.e. not just Windows this, Windows that) and thus there may be more appeal to
attend the General Meeting. It would be unfair to the membership to have to choose
between two good meetings. Again we will discuss this matter openly at our meeting
during the Q&A session, so be sure to get there on time.
Now for the March Meeting:
We will have not one, but two special guests, Kim Cheung, Executive Director,
Serenity Systems International, Marketing Directory TouchVoice Corporation; and
Chris Stumpf of C.S.E. Computer Services, a Serenity Systems Channel Partner.
They will be demonstrating various software packages from the Serenity product
line. How they're going to fit everything in to two and a half hours, I have no
idea; but I'm sure everyone will be anxious to find out.
Ever want to run a PC based PBX System and have the rock solid reliability of
OS/2 as the foundation? Then come and see WisePath and TouchVoice's other products.
You will see a PBX system so mean and lean it runs on a computer that in today's
world most people would just call a boat anchor.
And if that's not enough they will also demonstrate how to manage ALL of your
clients (OS/2 ~Windows) from one very special Warp Server.

And finally....
If you like what we have to offer, please join NYPC as member. For your $45 membership
you will have access to the most diverse group of Special Interest Groups (SIGs)
and the people who care that make them tick. We now have over two dozen SIGs, including
Cisco, Palm Pilot, Investing, iMac, Speech Recognition, Web Development, Streaming
Media, C++ and much, much more. All this in addition to our favorite SIG, OS/2.
So please do your part to help out the organization that makes all this possible.
Thank you.
"I pushed one button and deployed a network in 29 seconds per node. It was
worth my trip to Atlanta to see the vision of network computing delivered by Serenity
Systems' technology based on IBM's OS/2."- Peter Coffee in PCWeek,
http://www.zdnet.com/pcweek/stories/columns/0,4351,2377721,00.html
On March 9, PC users can come to NYC and see what excited Peter Coffee and had
members of the audience "falling out of their chairs" at an earlier SCOUG
meeting
http://www.scoug.com/presentations/serenity9903.html
The presentation in NYC will go further than any public demonstration, yet!
Kim Cheung, Excecutive Director of Serenity Systems, will be previewing Release
2.0 of WiseManager, the most powerful tool in the computing industry for building
and managing networks. For the first time there will be a public demonstration of
the e.ComStation, a server managed, remote boot client based on Warp Server for
e-business.
While this is extremely significant, so is the ability to remote boot and manage
Win9X, Win3.1, and DOS workstations. Part of the planned and exclusive cross platform
support is the ability to provide Win9X diskless RPL workstations ... as opposed
to an implementation which requires starting with an installed Windows fat client
PC.
WiseManager blazes through the tasks associated with building a network, which
so impressed Peter Coffee. But consultants and LAN Administrators will be amazed
at the features of WiseManager which support operational tasks. For example, drag
an application's icon and drop it onto a folder of users. That application is now
part of desktop for that department, or a single user. Slick enough, but now comes
the "grunt task" of updating Warp Server's Access Control List ... but
wait ... this is WiseManager! WiseManager automatically updates ACLs when that icon
was dopped the onto that folder of users. This is almost too easy!
With planned support for Windows workstations, WiseManager makes the best case
available for using Windows workstations, better than fat clients, better than Windows
Based Terminals, better than Citrix. And you don't even need OS/2 workstations on
the network ... but, if you have OS/2 workstations ... they will dazzle.
Kim Cheung is also a principal with TouchVoice Corp, a leading CTI vendor with
OS/2 based products. Here, OS/2 shines because of its reliability, responsiveness
and low costs. The WiseTalker products, available through Serenity Systems, are
commercial products without equal in the industry. The REXX support in WiseTalker
products makes the ability to customize the system so strong ... that the answer
to every question is, "Yes. We can do that."
Kim will discuss this business opportunity, for both users and consultants. Watch
for announcements from Serenity Systems to support channel partners internested
in the revenues available with auto-attendant voicemail and WiseTalker Database
Server with IBM DB2 6.1.
Plan on making the trip to the March 9 UG meeting, 6:30 PM, IBM building at 590
Madison Ave. If you can't get there, plan on contacting Serenity Systems at www.serenity-systems.com
... everyone managing a workstations should have an evaluation copy of WiseManager
in their hands. Serenity Systems will be making an announcement shortly regarding
an update to the Evaluation Kit program.

Since that happens to be George Washington's birthday... I cannot tell a lie!
It really is last months meeting that was canceled because we had a 20" snowfall
the night before!
We love getting together to discuss OS/2, but not under those conditions!
The meetings main topic will focus on how we can eliminate unnecessary OS/2 files

SCOUG Presents Security Smash With KeyRing/2
Security, security, security. Your antivirus software protects your system, your
firewall protects your network, you don't expect anybody to stick their nose into
your \tcpip\dll\ directory where you've secretly stashed those half-dozen pictures
of Pamela's Private Party, and you hope nobody opens and reads your MyPasswords.txt
file.
How can you protect those passwords? You have one for your online banking, three
for your credit cards, your eBay account, the one for the online casino where you
play the ponies, and don't forget your membership password for Pamela.com.
KeyRing/2 will keep those passwords safe.
"SCOUG's February meeting is the national rollout for KeyRing/2" says
Mark Abramowitz, Program Chairman for The Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG).
"IDK Software's head honcho will be demonstrating KeyRing/2 and all its advanced
features this coming Saturday, February 19."
Join OS/2 users, SCOUG members, maybe even Pamela and members of her "private
party" for an intensive security demonstration at the upcoming SCOUG meeting.
There's a NEW MEETING SITE for this main event -- see the map and directions at:
http://www.scoug.com/directions.html
"This is a major piece of security software," adds Abramowitz. "The
INF file alone is almost 2 MB. Anyone who uses the Internet should attend this meeting.
It's useful, it's important, and we're glad it's being released only on OS/2."
Saturday, Feb. 19, 9 a.m. - mark your schedule now for SCOUG and KeyRing/2.
