SW: New homepage for the "ooRexx" project ...

04 Feb 2005 20:20:04

Forwarded message from rony on Fri, 4 Feb
2005 08:08:43 UTC posted on: comp.lang.rexx

Hi there,

please take a look at the new homepage for the "ooRexx" (Open Object Rexx)
project at:

http://www.oorexx.org/

There you will also get the latest information at the present state of the
project.

Regards,

---rony

---END FORWARDED MESSAGE---

[Moderator note: From the December status page on that site
http://oorexx.sourceforge.net/status/2004-12-31.html

"Here is the final status for items received from IBM

1. Complete source code for the Object Rexx interpreter for Windows,
Linux, AIX and Solaris. The code we were given does not contain all the
materials necessary to build an OS/2 interpreter.
2. Source code for the external function libraries rexxutil, rxsock,
oodialog, rxmath and some smaller libraries.
3. Documentation in PDF and HTML format."

Also on the FAQ page http://www.oorexx.org/faq.html

"Q: Why is there no OS/2 (eCS) port of ooRexx?
The source code provided to RexxLA was maintained by one group of IBM
developers. The source code for OS/2 is maintained by a different group of
IBM developers, and that source code base was not supplied to RexxLA. One
of the future tasks for this project is to port the Open Source code for
ooRexx to OS/2."]

Net: If Windows 3.0 had never been created...

04 Feb 2005 17:49:21

From: outpostsysopDESPAM@earthlink.net

I was reading this on /. ( http://slashdot.org/ ) and it discusses how
OS/2 would have become the predominant OS if Windows 3.0 programs hadn't
been able to run in protected mode... here's the blurb from /. :

covertbadger writes "Larry Osterman said farewell yesterday to David
Weise, the developer he credits with getting applications to run in
protected mode on Windows 3.0, which led directly to Microsoft choosing to
push Windows instead of OS/2. Today he speculates on what the IT world
would be like if Weise had never completed this work. Windows 95 would
never have existed, OS/2 would be the de facto standard, and IBM would
never have put weight behind Linux because it had its own operating system
to push."

SW: Imapd for Weasel Pro, version 0.06

04 Feb 2005 06:49:20

From: Peter Moylan

IMAPD for Weasel Pro has just been updated to version 0.06. You can get it
from

ftp://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/Weasel/imapd006.zip

This is an add-on for the Weasel Pro mail server that allows it to act as
an IMAP4 server in addition to its existing POP3 and SMTP services.
Although it is ultimately intended only for registered Weasel Pro users,
the present version is a timed demo that will work without registration
with any recent version of Weasel. It will time out at the end of April
2005.

Although this is still technically a test version, it seems to be behaving
well under load, and it implements almost all features of IMAP4. I
wouldn't yet recommend it for full-scale commercial use, because it hasn't
had enough testing, but it should be satisfactory for noncritical
applications.

SW: Web Family Tree version 1.2 released

03 Feb 2005 07:06:10

From: Peter Moylan

Web Family Tree (freeware) has just been updated to version 1.2. This is a
CGI script that lets you display your family tree as a set of linked web
pages. By popular demand, the new version now displays a local subtree as
part of the display for each person. A few other enhancements have been
made to the display. Languages supported so far are French and English,
but adding another language is simply a matter of translating a small text
file.

You can fetch it from
http://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/os2/wft.html
or from
ftp://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/software/wft120.zip
and it has also been uploaded to Hobbes. Source code is also available for
separate download.

INFO: Group Purchase of Golden Code Java

02 Feb 2005 17:40:36

From: treasurerDESPAM@os2voice.org

I got the following message form Aymeric Peyret and am
sending this out to the VOICE group.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A VOICE SPONSORED ACTIVITY.
I am just forwarding the information. The group purchase only needs to be
ANY group of interested people. Aymeric will coordinate this.

with the French users of fr.comp.os.os2, we want to make a group purchase
for GoldenCode Java. Unfortunately, we have not reached the number of 10
which is required by Goldencode for a group purchase. I posted a message
in the German newsgroups, in case there were interested people, but
Christian Hennecke told me there had already been such a thing at the end
of 2004. He added though that people at Voice could be interested in such
a purchase

Details of the offer are available here:

SW: RBLcheck 2.2 and POPprxy 1.0 released

02 Feb 2005 16:17:12

From: os2softwareDESPAM@besse.nl

Today I released RBLcheck 2.2

This version features account profiles and a new set of added headers,
optimized for use with bayesian filtering.

RBLcheck scans email to see whether it was sent through hosts that are
well-known spam-sources, and tags it. It is configurable for multiple
RBL's and has a adjustable scoring system.

Today I also released POPprxy 1.0

POPprxy is a POP3 proxy daemon, which runs RBLcheck for each message that
is being fetched through it. This enables Mozilla mail and Thunderbird
users to use RBLcheck.

OT: Caution for yahooGroups users - "Web Beacons"

31 Jan 2005 22:34:43

From: Jerry Garren A

If you belong to any YAHOO GROUPS or use Yahoo in any other ways, you may
want to opt out of this.........

Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track Yahoo Group
users around the net and see what you're doing and where you are going -
similar to cookies.

Yahoo is recording every website and every group you visit. If you would
like to opt out of their tracking system, here's how to do it:

1 Go to http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy
2 In the column on the left side, under the title of "Special Topics,"
click "cookies".
3 At the bottom of this new page you will see a link that says "Click
here." Click that.
4 On that new page click the phrase "web beacon". That will bring you to a
paragraph entitled "Outside the Yahoo Network."
5 In this section you'll see a little "click here to opt out" link. Click
it.

Then STOP. What would normally be a confirmation button on the next page
will opt you back in.
