Continuing its support of OS/2, Sundial Systems has released DBExpert version
2.0.7. This is a "maintenance release" which does not explicitly add functionality
to the product. Rather, it fixes several problems, including memory leaks, errors
in the find function, and some user interface issues. Thus, Sundial Systems encourages
all DBExpert users to upgrade to version 2.0.7.
DBExpert is a relational database and application builder for OS/2 that is fully
object-oriented in its design and interface. It gives you all the advantages of
rapid database application development through the integrated use of Tables, Forms,
Reports, Queries and Macros. There's real power behind the interface - internally
it's SQL which you can even edit directly. For more demanding situations, you can
use REXX macros to process your data. To really bring things together, you can call
your REXX macros from inside SQL queries. No other product gives you this powerful
combination.
In addition to all of the power of SQL, REXX, and point and click, DBExpert supports
a wide range of database engines and formats. Instead of using some proprietary
database format, DBExpert uses the database format you prefer. Converting data from
one format to another is virtually automatic. Better yet, you can mix database formats
in a single DBExpert application.
For users of DBExpert version 2, this is a free upgrade. It can be downloaded
as an update from CompuServe's OS2AVEN forum or Sundial System's web site at http://www.sundialsystems.com/dbexpert/update.
There are separate 2.0.7 updates for both the full version of DBExpert and the Runtime
version. Users of DBExpert version 1 should contact Sundial Systems for upgrade
pricing.
For more information, visit Sundial's web site at http://www.sundialsystems.com.
Or, contact Sundial via email to dbexpert@sundialsystems.com, phone 562-596-5121,
FAX 562-596-7825, or mail to 909 Electric Ave., Suite 204, Seal Beach, CA 90740

WiseManager function is being expanded to include traditional OS/2 "fat"
clients".
WiseManager was developed as part of a model to manage OS/2 RIPL clients as part
of a Managed Client model. In response to requests from existing OS/2 users, additional
support features are being written into the product to support traditional fat clients
running OS/2.
While the feature set would not be as expansive as those available for RIPL clients,
it would allow for automatic distribution of software updates, including fixpacks,
applications, and upgrades.

It's well suited for use with removable media drives, or even your Hard Disk (Space
permitting) The package includes everything you need with the exception of Zip and
Unzip by Info-Zip. All CMD files, utilities, a scheduler, and installer are included.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that we will indeed be releasing an OS/2
version of MainActor version 3.0. We currently expect it to be ready by the end
of April.
Just noticed that PMView 1.05 was released the other day and it appears to fix
the bug I reported in 1.04 (warping images when resizing to one of the fixed choices).

VMware, Inc (http://www.vmware.com/) announced Virtual Platform Technology that
allows Intel-compatible PC and workstation users to run multiple operating systems
concurrently on one machine. And the sad news is that VMware does not currently
have any plans to support OS/2 as either a guest or a host operating system. Probably
a well organized campaign from OS/2 community will force VMvare to change their
mind.
Warp3 FixPak 38 for Japanese has been released.
ftp://service.japan.ibm.co.jp/pub/ps/fixpak/systemsw/os2/v30/wx03807/
Okay, I know TP's update is getting a little frequent... :) But I felt that the
improvement will help people, so there you have it... :) The basic I/O core is still
the same as V1.18, but the shell for the core is improved to make unattended operation
easier and faster...
New ThermoProtect V1.20 is available on ThermoProtect Homepage at http://www.pcenduser.com/ThermoProtect
Also available on:
hobbes.mnsu.edu/pub/incoming/tp-120.zip
and later it will be moved to:
hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/mboard/tp-120.zip
Freeware now and forever! :)
New Version Highlight :
@ThermoProtect now will not output a single byte of text to the screen when running
in the /file mode, this is to clear up the screen and save a bit or two of resource...
:) And as well, the initializing time have been cut by 3/4. :)
!The file output option was originally implemented as a stop-gap measure, thus
the text output wasn't quite 100% standard. Now it should conform to the stadnard
with CR, EOL and EOF charactors in the proper places.
!Spelling mistake on the display screen... :)
Slashdot (http://slashdot.org) is a news and information site with the headline,
"News for nerds. Stuff that matters." Although Slashdot includes lots
of interesting news items for technical people, it has always had a heavy slant
towards Linux (and a heavy slant away from OS/2) because all of the webmasters are
Linux users.
Recently, Slashdot has implemented a filter and portal system, where not only
can you filter out certain articles and authors, but they also offer a "window"
to several other news sites, including Warpcast and Loren's News and Rumors site
(http://www.os2ss.com/news/).
With the appropriate filters and OS/2 portals enabled, Slashdot becomes more
much acceptable to OS/2 users. If more OS/2 users read Slashdot regularly, add comments,
and submit major OS/2 news items (the announced location of Warpstock would qualify),
it will become even better.
A kind soul has uploaded two new refreshes of the ViRGE series driver (now 1.03.20)
and the Trio3D (4.10.00). Both are sitting in /pub/incoming at Hobbes
(http://hobbes.nmsu.edu) (could also be in /pub/new by now).
Should be noted that these are for english users. I don't know if DBCS versions
will be uploaded here or not.

This week's edition of Focus on OS/2 is now online.
The feature in this edition concludes the series on "How to make your OS/2
system Y2K compatible?" This feature concentrates on BIOS, hardware, and test
software available to ensure these components are Y2K compliant.
In addition the "What's New?" page contains a number of new links including
the announcement of the Norton antivirus for OS/2 client, and some amazing examples
of Microsoft tap-dancing during recent trial appearances and internal communications.
All the material can be accessed at http://os2.miningco.com.
I released a new beta of z! v2.4 which fixes some problems with the Aurora (Warp
Server 5) beta OS. Several other bugs were also fixed, and some new code was added
to skip over the "junk" that most win32 mp3 encoders add to the beginning
of the mp3s. You can get the latest version @ http://dink.org!
File Browser is a file manager with integrated web browsing support, graphic

The latest (981027) version of the Adaptec driver has 2 problems:
1. It is zipped in win32 format.
2. Does not work very well with the 3940UW card.(locks up my scanner and slows down
CHKDSK to a crawl)
I have had to reinstall the GA version. This is doubly a problem since this is
the version shipped with FP10 for Warp 4.0.

If anyone know what's going on with Gigabyte 6BXE's weird negtive voltage reading
(-12V shows up as -2.xxxV, and -5V shows up as -1.xxxV... very weird...), please
let me know...
Error/Bug Reports:
If this program says that it can't identify the chip... please do the following...
*MAKE SURE you do have a enviromental monitoring chip of some kind.
*Check if the output from ThermoProtect is making sense or not (ie +5V entry
showing +8V is NOT making sense... :) )...
*Check your motherboard manual and record down the model and the make of the
monitoring chip.
*E-Mail me the data... :)
CheckUrl 1.4 is available at http://village.flashnet.it/~rm03703/programs.
CheckUrl is a Rexx program that checks urls for validity. It can check Netscape
bookmark file or any other html or text file containing urls. CheckUrl supports
http and ftp urls. Freeware with source included
What's new:
M modified
+ new
- deleted 1.4
+ Added the capability to check directly HTML files, such as
NetScape bookmark file. This should be really useful!
During HTML file parsing a url dupe checking is performed too.
+ Better error handling (some still to do)
+ Better output:
now there are three categories of messages
- ok - the url exist
- warning - the url is relocated
- error - url not found
+ Log to file - possibility to log only warning and errors
M Changed the method to check urls: now CheckUrl fetchs the first
bytes of an url as if it was a browser (for http urls), because some
www servers don't support the HEAD request (incredible, but true!)
M Commented "call SockDropFuncs" and "call FtpDropFuncs", because
such dlls could be used by other running programs.
M Better handling of "Moved temporarily" and "Moved Permanently"
return messages

rsync is a replacement for rcp that has many more features.
rsync uses the "rsync algorithm" which provides a very fast method
for bringing remote files into sync. It does this by sending just the differences
in the files across the link, without requiring that both sets of files are present
at one of the ends of the link beforehand. At first glance this may seem impossible
because the calculation of diffs between two files normally requires local access
to both files.
The OS/2 Port of version 2.2.1 is available now from the web site at:
http://www.SteffenSiebert.de/ports/rsync.html
The current port has several limitations:
1.You can receive files only on devices which support long filenames.
2.The rsync port does not work in daemon mode. Thus the --daemon option is not available.
3.The server mode seems to have bugs. I'm not sure whether these bugs can be fixed
in rsync since the problem might be the OS/2 rshd.
There is a mailing list for the discussion of rsync and its applications. It
is open to anyone to join. I will announce new versions on this list.
To join the mailing list send mail to listproc@samba.org
with no subject and a body of "subscribe rsync Your Name".
To send mail to everyone on the list send it to rsync@samba.org.
The original Unix source is available from the web site at:
http://rsync.samba.org/
Please send questions regarding the OS/2 port to ports@SteffenSiebert.de
For other questions please use the mailing list at rsync@samba.org
sitecopy is for easily maintaining remote web sites. The program will upload
files to the server which have changed locally, and delete files from the server
which have been removed locally, to keep the remote site synchronized with the local
site with a single command.
The OS/2 Port of version 0.4.6 is available now from the web site at:
