Last Call for Solution Technology Low Cost OS/2 Scanning Bundle

Boca Raton, Florida--Solution Technology developer of TWAIN for OS/2, has been offering a high performance EPSON color scanner and software bundle for OS/2 users. The STi package contains an EPSON SCSI ES-1000C color scanner AND STi's TWAIN enabled Applause Image Utility for OS/2. This bundle allows the OS/2 user to scan black and white, gray scale or 24 bit color images with photographic quality. Applause for OS/2 allows the scans to be prepared for printing, inserting into documents or for use on the web.

"EPSON is excited about Solution Technology's software support of our scanners and peripherals within the OS/2 environment. We are excited our products will be available to the OS/2 user community.", said Dwight Nichols, VAR Territory Manager of EPSON America.

"We are pleased that we were able to work with EPSON to bring this special scanner bundle to the OS/2 user community. The high quality of EPSON scanners gives the OS/2 user very high flexibility at a very attractive price.", said Leon Zetekoff, Product Manager of Solution Technology.

STi is supplying EPSON ES-1000C scanners from EPSON's "B" stock inventory. EPSON "B" stock scanners are the result of newer scanners coming to market. These scanners are either new or are EPSON refurbished units. All scanners have undergone complete EPSON quality assurance and come with a one year parts and labor depot limited warranty from EPSON America.

This Applause/ES-1000C OS/2 bundle is being offered for the astoundingly low price of $169.95 (USD) prepaid plus shipping and sales tax where required. Due to the limited quantities, orders are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. STi has placed their last order of scanners since these are the last EPSON ES-1000C scanners that will be available. Act now to take advantage of this special offer. Shipping costs are additional and depend on the shipping method the purchaser desires. Florida purchasers will be charged 6% sales tax. At this time, deliveries can only be shipped to addresses in North America. Please call for additional information.

STi is a major manufacturer of production level OS/2 and NT based image, barcode, and forms processing products including BarCode Anywhere(TM), Genie(TM) Forms Express,(TM) and Image Edition(R) for OS/2. In addition, the company is a principal supplier of accessory imaging support subsystems for IBM's ImagePlus(R) and VisualInfo(R) product line.

Atlanta Targeted for Third Annual OS/2 Conference and Exhibition

The Board of Directors of Warpstock, Inc. (http://www.warpstock.org) has set the date for its third annual OS/2TM conference and exhibition, Warpstock '99. The event is set for October 16 and 17, 1999, and will be held at the Georgia International Convention Center (http://www.gicc.com), located one mile south of Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport. The event was officially announced on an Internet Relay Chat channel hosted by OS/2 Voice (http://www.os2voice.org) and attended by OS/2TM users from around the globe.

With the recent release Work Space on DemandTM 2.0 and anticipated release of an entirely new version of OS/2 Server, Warp Server for e-BusinessTM there is renewed interest in this powerful operating system. Recent cross- platform application upgrades available for OS/2 include StarOfficeTM 5.0; Netscape CommunicatorTM 4.04; and Symantec AntiVirusTM 5.0. According to event organizers paid attendance was greater last year than the previous year, and is expected to nearly double this year.

The previous two events presented workshops and presentations designed to provide the kind of community support that is usually associated with the Linux phenomenon. Warpstock has also provided independent OS/2 software developers a forum to exhibit and sell directly to users. Social events are slated to be held at the Atlanta Sheraton Gateway, which adjoins the convention center. Registration costs and early registration discount information will be released in early April.

OS/2TM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines, Inc. Warpstock, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing the OS/2 community together every year.

Abbottsbury Software updated their WinCast OS/2 driver for Hauppage WinTV and Wincast PCI cards to version 1.040T. However, they only updated the zip file, not the html (the web page and even the readme file inside the zip still shows 1.040M as the latest version). If you re-download the file and re-install you will see the WCAST.SYS driver inside is now at version 1.040T).

I've coded an addon DLL for WatchCat 2.1, which gives a convenient interface between WatchCat and the nice-package by Sharon Dagan.

The DLL enables priority-changing of running processes from within WatchCat.

Appearently there are some rough edges left: You'd better _NOT_ start WatchCat from config.sys or startup.cmd when using this DLL. I'm working on the problem ;)

Right now you can find it here:

In the past, I had always hoped that "someone" would establish a site that catered to the users of Rexx and VisPro/Rexx in particular. Personally, I had a lot of unanswered questions while learning Rexx and VisPro/Rexx and would like to see that rectified for new users as well as showing some of the old dogs (me?) learning a few tricks. Bernd Schemmer's terrific rexx "Tips and Tricks" covers a wealth of information on Rexx but the VisPro/Rexx user has nothing of the sort.

Having been involved in quite a few ventures I knew that "someone" would never get it done if "I" (read "you too") would not get out of my easy chair and do something about it. I am a proponent of the <paraphrase>Ask not what OS/2 can do for you, but what you can do for OS/2</paraphrase> line of thinking. In the OS/2 world, we can only expect our support systems to be as good as we are willing to make them.

This goes beyond a Rexx page and should be part of our overall thinking toward OS/2 advocacy and support (VOICE, ng's, mailing lists etc.) but that is a subject for another day. (btw: I use the term "advocacy" here in the nicest possible connotation <bg>)

The site is there to help anyone that needs help or hints using Rexx or VisPro/Rexx but it will only be as helpful as we are able to make it "collectively". </preach mode>

I will be putting snippets on the site as time allows but what I hope for is for "you" to share your expertise with others too. None of us in particular always know the best solution to a given problem but working together we can mold top shelf snippets by "committee" that will be available to everyone. There are also many things that we can help each other with that may not have been set forth very clearly in the documentation for Rexx or VisPro/Rexx.

If it grows, I will try to organize the information as best I can. I have given very little thought as to it's organization so far as I had just decided it was time to do something like this and forged ahead.

The site will be limited to OS/2 and VisPro based Rexx solutions for now as I am not familiar with some of the other platform idiosyncrasies and have a finite amount of time and space to host the information. RexxLA is planning a repository and I am happy to place this in their hands as a small segment of their site if it does develop.

Prospective contributors, please read the link "about this site" to see how we can make it easy on me getting your snippets posted. (there I go thinking about myself again) :-)

The site is at:

[Warpcast Moderator's note: This item has been edited quite a bit.]

I found the following message on the webpage of the german magazine ct'. I haven't noticed anyting on warpcast, and I guess it should also be of interest for american readers.

Translation (not word by word, but accurate in general):

A new notes-client for OS/2?

"Some large customers from the german financial sector have been putting pressure on IBM since the last Lotusphere in Berlin to get a notes version for their OS/2 clients.

"The European Lotus management seems to be convinced. Pierre van Beneden, general manager of Lotus Development EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), confirmed that the discussion on the R5-client wasn't finished yet. He said that the opinion was different in the USA, however, because OS/2 had no importance there anymore."

Hello all,

This is a very important message about the future of Win32-OS/2 (aka PE2LX). I think most of you know the program, if not check http://www.os2ss.com/win32-os2/

Since the old project team closed developement of it, we at OS/2 Netlabs hope to provide an enhanced version of this program. Some *big* (and I mean big) OS/2 customers contacted me and they asked wheter it is possible to enhance it very soon. The goal is very big, it is to get Microsoft Office running on OS/2.

I think this is definitely not easy, also because it looks like OS/2 itself is not able to provide all we need (512MB memory limit).

If we are able to provide this we can reach that the last big OS/2 customers stay on OS/2 in the future, if it is not possbible they have to switch to NT... I know they could also use other programs than MS Office, this is not my decission so don't say they should use StarOffice or something like this. It looks like they can't/don't want use it. The only thing they need is a new version of PE2LX.

Actually there are some teams working on serveral stuff, for example EverBlue and I think there will also be a port of WINE for OS/2 in the near future. To do this we need a lot of manpower and know how.

=> If you are able to support this project, please join the new mailinglist about it. We have to decide *very* soon whether this is possible or not. Please join this list if you are able to support us or if you see problems we might have. I don't want to say we will do it if it is not possible. Please *do not* subscribe to the list if you just want to see what happens, for sure we will keep you up to date through the web. OS advocacy is also *not* welcome on this list.

This would be one of the biggest OS/2 projects ever, but maybe this could really be a milestone in the future of OS/2.

Give it a try and join the list, we need every developer we can get!!!

The mailinglist is available at http://www.egroups.com/list/win32-os2/

Regarding the future of Hobbes: After I graduate, Hobbes will have to go somewhere else. For now my boss (Dave Rocks) and I have a few ideas, but definitely nothing concrete. If you could drop us both a line with any suggestions you may have (i.e. sites you know of who would be happy to take over the maintenance of Hobbes, other ideas on how to keep Hobbes alive in some form, etc.), it would be greatly appreciated.
