The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) will be next
Saturday, May 20, at 9:00 AM PDT, at Eastside Christian Schools (Heritage Campus)
in Anaheim at 2528 W. La Palma Ave.
DSL Extravaganza?
At press time, our presentation from GTE was being jeopardized by a real estate
developer. Watch the web site http://www.scoug.com
for updates.
If you don't have it now, you'll want it soon! That is, fast, cost- effective
Internet access. End the World Wide Wait! GTE, one of the biggies of xDSL providers
locally, will tell us everything we always wanted to know about xDSL, what DSL services
GTE provides, and answer SCOUG questions.
Former SCOUG Vice-President Paul Wirtz assisted GTE in its' pioneering DSL development
efforts. And while GTE doesn't officially support OS/2, we'll also hear about DSL
configuration under OS/2 from one of GTE's gurus.
This presentation, by popular demand, is not to be missed!
After the presentation, we'll have Q&A to help you with your questions ~problems,
and then a raffle. After a short break, then the Saturday SIG meetings:
General Interest Group: Will have a new "interesting" problem trying
to use the maintenance partition with Partition Magic 5's Boot Magic program and
also demonstrate using a vanilla PC DOS boot disk when all else fails, to get at
your system.
General Interest Group: Will have a new "interesting" problem trying
to use the maintenance partition with Partition Magic 5's Boot Magic program and
also demonstrate using a vanilla PC DOS boot disk when all else fails, to get at
your system.
Programming SIG: Will continue working on the SIG's programming project.
Monday, May 22, 7 PM PDT meetings at Eastside Christian Schools (Heritage Campus):
Got problems with your system? Volunteers at the OS/2 Help Desk will help you
solve them. Bring your system and all related hardware and software along with a
detailed explanation of your problem.
The Networking SIG will be meeting at the same time as the Help Desk in the Journalism
room. They will take the tips from Saturday's DSL presentation and apply them to
the school's DSL connection.
The Sundial SIG will not be meeting on May 25. Come join us on Thursday, June
22, to learn more about Mesa 2 macros and real-time data feeds.
How to get to Eastside Christian Schools (Heritage Campus):
The Eastside Christian School (Heritage Campus) in Anaheim is at 2528 W. La Palma
Ave. It is on the south side of the street (about 200 ft. E of Magnolia) on the
Grace Baptist Church property. It's a 2-story office building close to La Palma
Ave. with the address of 2528 up near the roof. (It's between 2 large apartment
complexes and can be easily missed). Look for the SCOUG banner (if you are driving
eastbound on La Palma Ave.) and/or a sign with the words "New Hope Christian
Center". Turn in (south) there. Park in the front lot. For the general meeting,
go up the stairs in the middle of the building along the parking-lot side.
For the weeknight SIGs, go in at the middle on the ground floor and down the
hall to your right.
Freeway exits: (subject to change due to freeway construction on I-5 and the
91 freeways):
1) North I-5 (from central/south Orange County): the Brookhurst/La Palma exit
has re-opened. Get off at Brookhurst/La Palma and turn left (going west over I-5).
The school/church will be on your left side.
2) South I-5 (from Los Angeles): take the Magnolia exit and turn right going
south. Turn left on La Palma Ave; the school/church will be on your right side.
3) West 91 freeway (from the Inland Empire, etc): take the Magnolia exit and
turn left going south. Turn left on La Palma Ave; the school/church will be on your

*** APRIL FEATURE PRESENTATION ***
-- IBM Information Presentation Facility --
OS/2 SIG member Barry Mann will conduct a presentation and demonstration of IBM's
Information Presentation Facility (IPF).
These easy-to-use native OS/2 tools are available to turn a dull, flat ASCII
text file into a slick-looking searchable .INF document. The only tools needed are
your favorite text editor, the IPFC.EXE compiler and its auxiliary files.
Working with IPF is much like writing web pages. Enough basics to create passable
documents can be mastered in a short time. Complex documents need more planning
and management. We'll start with the basics, showing how simple ASCII files can
be converted to .INF documents in a few minutes time. Following this, Barry will
discuss how to organize larger works for IPF conversion.
Along the way, Barry will do live demonstrations of converting raw ASCII text
files to nicely formatted .INF documents.
A brief descriptive announcement will also be made in regard to a Build-a-Thon
II (build-your-own) group project which is being planned for the May and June meetings
during this coming spring.
Other agenda items include SIG business matters, OS/2 news, new software releases,
Q&A session, software raffle, etc. An OS/2 system will be on hand for demos
of OS/2, Java, Internet, etc., as time permits. Free light refreshments will also
be available.
Mark the date and time: Wednesday, April 26th, at 7:00pm, to hear about all the
new and exciting developments, or if you have questions about OS/2 Warp and Java.
OS/2 SIG meetings are open and free for OS/2 users, their guests and all others
interested in learning about OS/2 and associated Java technology.
