eCS Fixtool v1.09.4 and IBM Service Tool (German and English)
A new version of the eCS fixtool (v1.09.4) with NLS (multilanguage)
support has been posted to the eComStation site, as of April 4, 2002.
The Fixtool allows various fixes released for eCS v1.0 to be applied in
the same manner, including eCS Fixpacks 1 and 2, updated driver packages,
Java update packages (the files listed as JRT0824 and JRT1106, not the
javainrt.exe or javaintk.exe packages) and TCPIP updates, which have been
posted to eComstation web site.
The Fixtool v1.09.4 consists of three files in total. The third file
currently has a German Version and an English Version. The previous
version (English only) is also still present on the web site.
A German and English version of the IBM service tool (v1.44) is also
present on the eComStation web site, and the zipped file is also required
to be present in the directory where the eCS Fixtool is installed, in
order to apply eCS Fixpacks.
eCS Fixpack 2 (German)
The german version of eCS was posted to the eComStation web site as of
April 4, 2002.
The fixpack consists of eight files, with the last two being required for
SMP systems, using eCS Pro.
A new version of the eCS fixtool (v1.09.4) with NLS support is also
present on the same site.
ZxMail package error
Sorry all, the package indicated as v1.1.12 was incorrectly updated,
because of this and it being already distributed we decided to increase to
v1.1.13 this is the correct version that contains the proper fixes
mentionned.
Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.
So if you downloaded v1.1.12 i recommend you download v1.1.13 since this
is the correct package.

Firewall and VPN documentation now on Hobbes
I've written an INF document describing how to configure and use the
built-in MPTS firewall and VPN feature.
It has been uploaded to Hobbes (see /pub/incoming) as firewall_doc_v10.zip
Search: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=firewall_doc_v10.zip
URL: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/firewall_doc_v10.zip
WHAT IS THE BUILT-IN FIREWALL?
The MPTS firewall feature is included in MPTS v5.3/TCP/IP v4.1 and up, and
is one of OS/2's best-kept secrets. Until now, it has had no
documentation (or even official acknowledgement) besides some sparse and
incomplete notes scattered amongst various RedBooks. Many people
probably don't even know it exists.
This feature includes IP packet filtering and IPSec tunnel
functionality, both inherited from the AIX SecureWay Firewall product.
(The code wasported over from the AIX as part of the 32-bit TCP/IP stack;
probably for the sake of providing the dynamic IPSec tunnel client, which
is the only part of it to have an actual GUI interface). With these
features, OS/2 is capable of functioning as a VPN host, or even as a
basic firewall.
The more advanced features of SecureWay, such as NAT or SOCKS server
functionality, are not available in the MPTS firewall.
OS/2 file system shootout
Michal Necasek has written an article a comparing the
advantages/disadvantages of OS/2 file systems (FAT, HPFS, HPFS386 and JFS)
http://pages.prodigy.net/michaln/os2/os2fsperf.html
New SysInfo/2 build 0.8.11
SysInfo/2 ver. 0.8.11 is uploaded to Hobbes. List of new futures:
- Some new devices & vendors were added to PCI.INI
- An error was corrected that prevent SysInfo/2 from working
withoutPCI.INI file;
- An error was corrected in Display identification algorithm working with
new SDD builds ( > build 32 ). Now SysInfo/2 can identify Display
information, returned from SDD;
- New PCI information is shown in Device information window in "System
Device Tree" page - that is Power Saving Caps, AGP Caps and so on;
- Device Manager PCIBus and ISA bus are linked with Host-to-PCI Bridge and
PCI-to-ISA Bridge;
- And some other minor errors were corrected too.
Project homepage will be updated as soon as possible

New 04/01 testcase kernel
Hi folks... Just noticed new kernels on testcase
If the current kernel in your notebook will not un-suspend
Try this one.
ftp://testcase.boulder.ibm.com/ps/fromibm/os2/
My Thinkpad 390 has been un-suspending for the last several kernels
Sincerely Glenn Strazds
Note; I have not put this kernel in my notebook yet?
[Moderator's note: As always these are not officially supported by IBM
unless they tell you to use them. Please send any followup to
comp.os.os2.bugs on usenet. Also note that files are only on IBM's
testcase for 2-3 days, so if you want to try these get them now. Make
certain you back up any files replaced and don't try these on a production
system. Read any readme file before applying any changes. If your system
is working well, and you have no problems addressed by these updates, do
yourself a favour and don't mess with this. You have been warned.
These testcase kernels contain fixes since xr_e002/xr_m016/mcp2/acp2. The
UNI and SMP files are for WSeB/ACP/eCS Pro (SMP kernel) and the W4 files
are for post FP15/MCP versions, including eComStation. Only use the SMP
kernel on a machine with more then one CPU.
Here are the latest changes in this version, as posted in the readme file.
(See the Readme for a complete listing):
Bug Fixes:
04/01: df_ret/df_deb trap on some memory analysis operations. note, you
can
use this df_ret.exe (& df_deb.exe) on dumps of kernels back to
about
Sep 2001 or so. Just always use the symbols that match the dump.
Fixes to problems that exist in released code:
04/01 revision 14.088g
JR15405 part 2: more likely fix for 49.7 day hang (still in test)
JR15038 part 2: more trap 8s running an app from a tcpbeui drive]
OS/2 revision levels documented
I've just put up a web page that documents the revision levels of major
system components for each recent base release of OS/2. This helps me,
anyway, when I try to decide what I am going to have to do to bring a
system up to date.
It is in no way meant to replace WarpUpdates http://www.warpupdates.mynetcologne.de/, and indeed doesn't really
provide the same information.
It also documents kernel revision levels for recent releases and fixpacks;
this makes interesting reading when trying to gauge rough equivalences.
The page is at:
http://www.tavi.co.uk/os2pages/levels.html
Photo quality printer under OS/2
I recently purchased an Epson Photo 820 printer which works very well
under eCS-OS/2 with the EPOMNI3 driver from IBM Japan ftp://ftp.jp.ibm.com/pub/pspj/os2ddpak/printers/epomni3e.exe. The print
quality for photos is about as good as on windows (so I'm told) or a Mac
(I have the parallel port connected to an eCS machine and the USB to an
iMac). But the driver utilities (nozzle check, head alignment, head
cleaning) don't work with this printer/driver combination and the print
quality tops out at 1440x720 while the printer is capable of 2880x720 DPI.
So I have started an email survey to see what if any interest there is in
getting this printer better supported. Please send all replies to epson820@os2voice.org I am particularly interested in responses from
anyone that would use this printer in a commercial/business application or
setting, but replies from anyone truly interested in needing a photo
quality printer under eCS-OS/2 are also appreciated.
- Please briefly describe your company (company focus / size of company
/ use of OS/2)?
- If you are interested in being contacted about this please include an
email address, contact name and company name (if applicable).
- How many Epson Photo 820 printers (current and future) would you
need?
- Would you prefer support for a different Epson model? If yes,
please explain (model/quantity needed/why preferred).
- Why would you need 2880 DPI printing?
- Which applications would you be using with this printer?

Update for Windows Terminal Server client available
I have uploaded a new version of rdesktop to Hobbes.
This is a free (Open Source) RDP client ported from Unix
to OS/2, which you can use to connect to a Windows NT/2000/XP Terminal
Server. EMX and XFree86 are required.
New in this second release:
- The OS/2 port is now free for commercial and
non-commercial use. Previously, an old math library was
used which excluded commercial use. Instead, rdesktop now
uses a local copy of OpenSSL (BSD style license).
- Upraded to the latest version, 1.1.0pl19-8-5, adding new
options. For instance, with --built-in-license,
rdesktop can now emulate a Windows 2000 Professional
TS CAL license.
The zipfile is currently in incoming but should move soon
to /pub/os2/system/x11/term (for lack of a better place).

a) EWWS Tips & Tricks Database Web Access
We are happy to announce an additional way of communication and exchange
of
informations. We have putted a Lotus-Notes based Information "portal"
online, which we ask you to exchange informations, experiences, etc. To
keep control of who has access to this database, a registration is
required. This database syncs regulary between IBM and Starfire (and add.
Mirrors in the future). Please register at:
http://www.titan-central.com/ibmwsodtips
[Moderator note: I could not find a way to register at this site. A
logon/password is required. If I learn of a way to do so I will send an
update on the list.]

c) FingerPrint Device Support
IBM Global Services Germany and Siemens AG are now working jointly
together on
biometric access integration into OS/2 operating systems.
In a first step Siemens biometric division realized a connectivity for
their ID-Mouse with OS/2. Using this solution, Login to OS/2 systems and
related applications will change from Name/Password oder personal access
Code (PINs), hardly remembered by users, to easy finger tip. Flexible
integration to existing environment is possible, as well as replacing
standard login-procedures of Warp Server for e-business or Workspace
on-Demand. Contact us at emeawarp@de.ibm.com if you want to integrate a
FingerPrint Device into your corporate OS/2 environment. This has been
demo'd successfully at CeBIT 2002 in Hannover.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
d) Windows XP not Java compatible
We usually don't cover non-OS/2 issues, but for those, who are
considering migration from OS/2 to Windows, should definitely have at look
at:
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20020308/ap_on_hi_te/sun_microsoft_lawsuit_13
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
e) InfraRed Support updated
IBM updated the InfraRed stack and released it on Software Choice. It now
also works with the InfraRed chipset used in the latest T23 Thinkpads. We
also tested with Cellphones like Ericsson T39, T68 in addition to the ones
tested by the Lab, and it works great.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
f) SCSI Geometry Filter
Some SCSI device drivers report incorrect geometry for media in
partitioned removable devices (such as ZIP drives). In addition to some of
the media space being unusable, the Logical Volume Manager (LVM) considers
the partitions on the media to be corrupt, and media prepared on non-SCSI
attached devices may not be readable. This filter corrects the geometry
reported by the device driver, if required, insuring that all space is
reachable and that LVM considers the partitions valid. Get the filter
from:
http://www7.software.ibm.com/2bcprod.nsf/Driver+Profile+Web/scsiflt.exe?OpenDocument
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
g) Technical Training for OS/2 MPTS 6.0 enhancements
We finally announce a technical class on all MPTS enhancements and
changes since
Warp Server 4. These are for example TCP/IP 4.x (aliasing), TCPBEUI
changes,
multiple adapter, Big enhancements and changes in Name Resolition (DDNS,

h) CeBIT 2002 Review
At CeBIT 2002, the IBM EWWS Team showed a Thin Client scenario using
WorkSpace
On-Demand Version 3.02 on OS/2 Server as well as Virtual PC running
different PC Operating Systems (SuSE Linux 7.99, Windows 98 SE, Windows NT
4, OS/2 MCP2) as a guest on top of OS/2. Furthermore, the ID Mouse (see c)
for details) provided by SIEMENS was used to show how biometric access
integration into OS/2 may look like. The booth was very well visited,
thanks to all who showed there interest into the solutions shown. The
WorkSpace On-Demand OS/2 Client was running OS/2, 32 Bit Windows (via
Citrix Client using a Windows Terminal Server) and Java applications
concurrently. If you are interested in this scenario or want to get
further information on how to integrate certain parts of this demo setup
into your corporate environment, please contact us at emeawarp@de.ibm.com.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
i) Warp Community Update Workshop II/2002: Plannings
The current plannings are to host "WCUW6" in week 38 (Sept 16-20) in
Duesseldorf.
Date and city are still subject to change. Please give us feedback about
your preferences regarding date, city and topics as soon as possible.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
j) IGS - Innotek Partnership
At CeBIT 2002, IGS, represented by our Team signed a Partnership
agreement with Innotek. This Partnership will enable IBM IGS to support
all Innotek products through IGS standard support channel, which will be
beneficial for all customers. Also IGS project teams will be staffing
Proof-of-Concepts, Implementations and Roll-outs for Innotek Products.
Innotek can offer standard IGS services around their products suite and
support through MVSL contracts.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
g) IGS - AMD Partnership
Our Team also now supports AMD in testing their latest Chipsets and
Processors
for OS/2 compatibility. Currently, we successfully tested and certified a
dual K7 Tyan Board with MP chipset implementation, while a ASUS MPX board
is still in testing.
That's it for now. Stay tuned for the next NewsFlash.
Warm regards.
Update: eCS Fixpack 2
Note that the kernel included with FixPak 2 (Level 14.088) has a bug that
turns off the DELDIR function.
It *appears* to work because it updates the control file as if the deleted
file was saved to the DELDIR, but if you try to restore the file you will
get a error message that the file could not be restored.
IBM is aware of the problem and it has been fixed in subsequent kernels on
testcase.
If DELDIR is important to you (it was to me), you will have to restore the
older kernel from the BACKUP directory after the fixpak is installed.

Bug in PMMail 2.20.2380
There is a minor problem in PMMail 2.20.2380 that is causing it to show
the Time Zone Designator as Daylight time even though Daylight Time does
not begin for those of us in the Eastern Time Zone until April 7 2002. (I
don't know how or if this affecting people in other time zones, but if you
live there you should probably check.) Hopefully the problem will reset
itself when Daylight Time actually begins.
If you are not running an internet-based clock such as Time868 or eCS
Clock, you may be able to get around the problem by REM'ing out the TZ
statement in your CONFIG.SYS. However internet clocks require the TZ
statement.
I have written Blueprintworks about the problem and will post any response
from them here.

eCS Fixpack 2
While it has been reported that Convenience Pack 2 and Fixpack 16 were
released for the various versions of Warp 4, I have not seen any reports
of Fixpack 2 for eCS.
The files for Fixpack 2 for eCS were uploaded to the eComStation site http://www.ecomstation.com/ and have been available in the download area since
March 15, 2002.
The complete fixpack contains 8 files (files 7 and 8 are only required for
SMP systems) and may be installed using eCS Fixtool 1.09 (also available
on the download site).
After installation, the kernel is updated to the 14.088 level.
JCalc 0.20 - simple calculator for Java
Hi,
My JCalc calculator version 0.20 for Java is freely available for download
at : http://users.pandora.be/luc.vanbogaert/java_index.html
It works quite well, but as this is one of my first attempts to create
something usefull with Java (or any other programming language for that
matter) don't expect too much of it ;-)
JCalc requires Java 1.3

Turn OS/2-eCS games to Open Source !!
I'm currently working on my site and trying to get in touch with more
OS/2-eCS games authors to make their old OS/2-eCS games Open Source.
Making their games open source will help other developers in the community
to learn from the code and possible continue this projects.
Right now Im listing all OS/2-eCS Open
Source games at: http://www.os2world.com/games/html/opensource.html
So, if you know any game developer of an unsupported, abandon, new, old,
nice or ugly OS/2-eCS game, ask them kindly to open source their game
under any license he/she prefers, and let me know so I can package it and
put it on my site.
Plus you can always tell me if Im missing an OS/2 game on my site, or any
other sugestions.
