We scan the Web, Usenet and the OS/2 mailing lists looking for these gems. Have you run across an interesting bit of information about OS/2 or eComStation recently? Please share it with all our readers. Send your tips to tips@os2voice.org. If you are interested in joining a particular OS/2 mailing list, check out the VOICE Mailing List page for subscribing instructions for a large variety of existing lists - http://www.os2voice.org/mailinglists.html.
Editor's note: these tips are from OS/2-eComStation users and in some cases can not be verified by myself. Please heed this as a warning that if you are not sure about something, don't do it.
Re Alan Beagley's tips about NICs that work under OS/2, I recently bought a card using the RTL8139 (living in the UK, I paid rather more than $4.99 for it!), and have tried three sets of drivers before finding one that works.I am using the Jan 2003 drivers from Hobbes: "rtsnd323.zip" and have no trouble with PCCARD errors, but I did manually edit the PROTOCOL.INI file using the "Edit" button in MPTS to set the CARDBUS parameter to NO and the APM to 0. When my machine boots, I get a message "Unable to register" and after the driver loads a message about "The Cable may be Disconnected", but they don't seem to lead to any loss of function. The end of my PROTOCOL.INI file reads as follows:-
Hope this helps [RTL8139_nif] DriverName = RTSND$ MEDIUM = "_AUTO" NOIRQ = 0 APM = 0 CARDBUS = "NO"Richard Hussey,

Mar 26, 2003 - Someone was asking the use of SCKILLFEATUREENABLED= with eCenter (which is the eComStation version of XWorkplace's XCenter application/control bar) on the ecomstation.beta news group. Here was my response:Go to XCenter Widgets page - http://www.os2usr.org/xcenter/Get the WxTask plugin - http://www.xcenter.os2usr.org/wxtaskb3.zip
Install the wxTask.DLL in x:\ecs\system\ewps\plugins\xcenter
Close and restart eCenter. I don't think you have to reboot.
Right click on an empty space on eCenter. I usually put the mouse pointer over a widget slider or the top edgeof the eCenter where you get the double arrow pointer <-> Or you can move the mouse all the way to the very bottom or side of the eCenter and right click.
Select "Create new widget".
Select "Tasks".
This new button will act like the one on SmartCenter/WarpCenter/eComCenter bar. Clicking on the Task button will give you a list of running tasks. Holding [Ctrl] and clicking on the Task button gives you a bigger list of running tasks with their pids and you can select one to kill.
That and the Spacer widget are the two I always install as soon as I have XCenter/eCenter installed.

Apr 18, 2003 - Next a tip for MR2ICE users from Jim L. on the MR2ICE User mail list:Several times I've asked how to get a message from a folder back to the In Box.Several times I've been told you can't.
If you ever want to do it it is very simple. I don't know why I never thought of it before. I copied a message from Trash into the Mail sub directory and renamed the extension to RCV. (Getting it from a folder would obviate the need for that.) I went in and did an index rebuild on my In Box and behold - there it was. Obviously I can remove it from trash now.
