. *** THURSDAY APRIL 24 MEETING AGENDA ***
. ** LINUX FILESYSTEM BASICS **
LINUX ORIENTED Q&A SESSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In place of the usual short presentation/demo, an extended Q&A session
oriented to Linux will be conducted by David Moskowitz. Where possible, a
live Linux system may be used to illustrate questions, answers and
comments which are brought up for group discussions.
MAIN PRESENTATION
LINUX FILESYSTEM BASICS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scott Russell of IBM will conduct a presentation/demo of Linux filesystem
basics, one of the most important factors in learning Linux (originally
scheduled for the February meeting which was cancelled due to a
snowstorm). Understanding of Linux filesystem basics insures that users
will get the most out of the system now and well into the future.
Scott's presentation will cover the following items:
o Basic Linux filesystem paradigm
o The mount point philosophy
- Physical/logical disks
- Network shares
o "Well Known" mount points, including ...
- /, /boot, /home, /usr/local, /opt, /etc
o Filesystewm commands to control mount points
- /etc/fstab
- the mount command
o Suggested disk layout: one user's perspective
o The basics of file permissions
An IBM Thinkpad running SuSE 8.0, using Open Office's "Impress" software
will be used for the presentation and will provide a glimpse into a real
live system's /etc/fstab file setup for both home and business
environments.
Scott Russell has more than 20 years experience as an application
development & systems programmer. He was employed by Soft-Switch when
Lotus bought the company in 1994, which was bought out in turn by IBM in
1995. He currently works in the IBM Lotus support organization where he
develops software support tools.
Scott has been associated with our user group for several years. He was a
former day-to-day OS/2 user, starting with v.1.2. But turned to Linux as
his main desktop 3 or 4 years ago.
We're very pleased that he has agreed to do this presentation. All members
are urged to come to the April 24th meeting and
make a good showing for Scott Russell.

Other agenda items include announcements, news, Q&A session, and raffles.
The usual free refreshments will also be available.

SCOUG meeting April 19: Guiffy version 5
The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) will
be this Saturday, April 19, 2003 at 9:15 AM PDT, at the Fullerton Public
Library, 353 W. Commonwealth Ave., in meeting room B.
Guiffy Returns to SCOUG April 19th!
What a Difference a Year Makes
You remember Guiffy (pronounced "goofy"). We saw what a versatile
development tool it is at our meeting in February 2002. Now we look
forward to having developer Bill Ritcher of Guiffy Software http://www.guiffy.com/ back at SCOUG to show how he's updated the software.
Guiffy is a powerful multi-platform utility for visually comparing and
merging source files, folders, and even file trees. Version 5.0 was
released on March 15th, and new pricing was just announced April 1st. If
you're a developer, you'll certainly want to be at this meeting to see
just how indispensible this latest version of Guiffy can be for you. If
you're not, you'll appreciate all that's involved in managing software
development.
Also at our April meeting, Lynn Maxson and Bob Blair plan to continue in
their quest to assure the success of OS/2 open source by defining the
optimum environment for efficient development. You should plan to stick
around after Guiffy for the Programming SIG and give them a hand.
As always, if you're having difficulties with something OS/2 related, be
ready to explain your problem and get some answers and suggestions for
solving it during the Q and A session. Donuts and coffee await you, too.
Help Desk chats are on Wednesday evenings at 7 PM PDT. If you've got a
problem with hardware or software, join the chat and ask for help. Info is
at http://www.scoug.com/chat/index.html.
OS/2 Help Desk and Networking SIG, May 4th, 2003, 2 PM PDT, Chapman
University in Orange:
SCOUG's in-person OS/2 Help Desk is held once a month at Chapman
University, in room 203 of the Hashinger Hall Science building. SCOUG
volunteers are there to help you work through your hardware and software
problems.
The Networking SIG normally meets at the same time and place as the live
OS/2 Help Desk, but it's still on hiatus. We hope to have it back in May
or June. Check the SCOUG website http://http://www.scoug.com/, especially the
"Next Meeting" link in the upper left-hand corner for further updates.
How to get to the Fullerton Public Library:
From the 91 freeway, exit Harbor Blvd. heading north. Turn left at
Amerige Ave. The library is 2 1/2 blocks down on your left-hand side; the
main entrance is actually on Amerige 1/2 block west of Highland Ave.
From the 57 freeway, exit Chapman Ave (near Cal State Fullerton) heading
west. After you pass Harbor Blvd., go 2 more blocks and turn left on
Highland Ave. Go 3 short blocks south on Highland Ave. and turn right on
Amerige Ave.; the library is 1/2 block down on your left.
How to get to Chapman University:
There are two ways to get directions:
1) Go to http://www.scoug.com/warpexpowest/sitemap.html
2) Go to http://www.mapquest.com/ and enter the address 400 N. Center
Street, Orange, CA.
You can park in any of the University lots for free on Sundays, but if you
part on the street, watch the signs carefully or else risk getting a
parking ticket.
Come to Hashinger Hall Science Building, room 203. It's on the second
floor and there's an elevator for you to bring up your equipment.
Come and join us! Visit us at http://www.scoug.com
