IBM to Deliver Java 2 Standard Edition 1.3 Support on Nine Operating Platforms
http://www.developer.ibm.com/java/j2/
IBM's new family of Java** 2 Standard Edition 1.3 implementations will span nine
operating system platforms -- Windows**, Linux, AIX*, OS/390*, OS/400*, and OS/2*,
and three operating platforms for Intel 64-bit hardware architecture. All of the
new Java Virtual Machines are compatible with the Java 1.3 specification.
I have noted that the driver software for Eicon DIVA ISDN cards has been updated.
Below is info from the readme:
Additional Installation Info for Eicon DIVA Client cards under OS/2
Version 6.03e
The Protocol driver can now be loaded for PCMCIA cards (DIVA/PCM and DIVA Pro
PC- Card) without the need that the PCMCIA adapter must be plugged during the boot
process. This is achieved by the new command line parameter "-f<C|M>".
The parameter "-fC" sets up the driver to support a DIVA Pro PC-Card,
whereas the parameter "-fM" sets up the driver to support the DIVA/PCM
adapter. The driver is then prepared to initialise the appropriate card if it is
plugged after the initialisation process of the protocol driver.
If one of the two PCMCIA card types is plugged during the initialisation process,
the "force" parameter is left unrecognized. This parameter is case insensitive.

Papyrus 8 English version for OS/2 is out and we just evaluated it on Warp 4.5
and rated it. We are just publishing a review about this test on our web site at:
Papyrus is a native OS/2 word processor.
An item I wasn't sure got noticed... IBM recently added the Warp-Tech announcement
to their list of news items on the main OS/2 page:
http://www-4.ibm.com/software/os/warp/
The Warp-Tech announcement itself is here:
http://www-4.ibm.com/software/os/warp/possi.html
A little late, but it's much appreciated. Hopefully they will post about Warpstock
as well (and hopefully a little earlier than 2 weeks notice.)
This is to announce the availability of RexxAutoStart Version 1.60. This release
includes the following new features and bugfixes over the last published version
1.50:
- Removed any requirement for Object Rexx and/or RxExtras. - Added the install.exe
to build and open the RexxAutoStart folder - Added RexxAutoStart Utility - Added
Warp Server for e-Business support - RexxAutoStart no longer generates a REXX script
for each execution. Objects in the startup folder are opened directly by RexxAutoStart.
- The standalone installation (AutoStrt.CMD) supports all the same options as RexxAutoStart
- Added /L, log information to a log file - Added /I, install/modify RexxAutoStart
- Added /U, uninstall RexxAutoStart - Added /C, create a folder on the desktop
RexxAutoStart Version 1.60 is available at:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/rxast160.zip
and later probably at:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/wps/rxast160.zip
For those of you, who do not know what RexxAutoStart is: This program is a workaround
for timing problems that lead to a WPS hang upon startup on certain OS/2 versions
and fixlevels. Additionally it gives you a limited possibility to control the order
of automatically started programs upon bootup and means to make any folder your
startup folder.
RexxAutoStart is FREE software under the GNU GPL. Source code for RexxAutoStart
is included. Source code for (discontinued) GUI front end upon request.
Development of RexxAutoStart 1.60 was (almost) completely done by Chuck McCinnis,
who I would like to say many, many thanks for your efforts.

Okay, after a long rest, I finally added some update to ThermoProtect to bring
the version number up to 1.33 (Okay, so I don't like to jump up from version to
version... :) )
This new version includes some (IMO) neat features that are not seen anywhere
else. :)
The following is the stuff from Enviro.HST... :)
*Now ThermoProtect will show thermal sensor #2 and #3 with slightly better detail,
as it now increments in steps of 0.5C instead of 1.0C. Both I/O core and the shell
are modified to add this feature.
@Voltage output to both named pipes and file will have fixed decimal point, it
will show 3 digits after the decimal point, regardless if the last one or two digits
are zero or not. This makes the named pipe output seems neater.
*Due to the last Peltier/Water Cooling disaster that I have here. (The SETI@Home
ran out of things to do, and the Peltier/Water Cooling managed to lower the CPU's
temperature below freezing point. When SETI@Home finally got something to do, it
melted the ice formed on the CPU, which then caused a short... Good thing that it
does not appear to have done real damage.) I decided that I need to have a small
program that can create CPU load to heat up the CPU to prevent the CPU going below
a pre-defined temperature limit. Thus Temperature Watch function was created. It
runs a small timed loop that does intensive float point and integer calculation,
which will heat up the CPU quite nicely.
*EnvSetup.exe now have 2 pages for the main menu, because there's too much feature
to fit in one page. :)
Now ready for download from my site:
(Just follow the link to ThermoProtect.)
And it has already been uploaded to Hobbes, however, I would recommend downloading
from my page if possible, because I would like to see how many people are interested
in ThermoProtect, and click the banner on the page while you are there.
The three-day Rexx Symposium and the three-day WarpTech 2000 OS/2 conference
are scheduled for the same week at the same facility, and guests of either have
free access to the other's sessions on Friday May 26.
Rexx is a well-known highly regarded programming language. OS/2 users have a
keen interest in Rexx and OS/2 programs often allow for the execution of Rexx add-ons
or extensions.
Mike Cowlishaw, the creator of Rexx, will speak at a joint session on Friday
May 26. Cowlishaw's presentation is open to guests of either conference.
"The Rexx Symposium runs Wednesday to Friday, and WarpTech runs Friday to
Sunday" says Chip Davis, President of The Rexx Language Association which is
hosting The Rexx Symposium. "Rexx users are interested in OS/2, and OS/2 users
are interested in Rexx."
The ANSI Standard Committee for Rexx will meet in conjunction with The Rexx Symposium.
"We chose the same week and the same resort hotel so that one plane fare
and one hotel booking will let you attend both" adds Bill Schindler of the
WarpTech 2000 OS/2 show and co-author of a book on Rexx. "And Friday is a complimentary
day for guests - if you've registered for one conference you can attend Friday sessions
at the other."

Since our announcement on the 15th we have updated the PillarSoft website with
downloads of the new version of WarpZip v3.0. We have also included one of the other
archiving formats we have been working on. WarpZip will now search for, list, view,
extract and do "near seamless" installations from Zip, Arj, Rar, Lzh,
Tgz, Gz and OS/2 "packed" file formats.
We have zipped the new format archives all together (in their original form)
into one large archive to make it easier for users to find each of them. This archive
should also make it easier to install support for each of the new formats by allowing
you to open it and drag the four new unarchiver binaries into the WarpZip directory.
The archive (for the unarchiver binaries) is rather large right now (1 meg) but
we will pare the size of it down as we find the legal means of distributing the
binaries only with WarpZip. Some of them are freeware but we will err on the side
of caution until we are sure of the distribution status and rules for each format.
We have also updated the PillarSoft Suite with the new version of WarpZip as
well as updating the drop dead dates in the four or five apps that use it.
We won't go into the feature list here but invite you to take a look at our website
for more information. As has been the case from it's first release... there is no
charge for this update to WarpZip.
We will be offering special pricing at WarpTech on all of our software as well
as an online discount of the PillarSoft Suite (99 USD) for the duration of WarpTech.
[Please allow extra time to get keys delivered as we will be on the road and internet
access may be spotty.]
The support for new formats in WarpZip has been a long time coming and we hope
it makes WarpZip your "one stop shop" for dealing with all of your archives.

Two powerful Indelible Blue OS/2 systems are on their way to WarpTech's Silent
Auction.
"We'll have them on demonstration in two of the seminar rooms," says
WarpTech's Esther Schindler. "The presenters will get to use them, and we'll
have a silent auction so the machines will go straight to OS/2-loving homes and
offices."
Indelible Blue's James North is working closely with WarpTech to specify the
machines. Each will be preloaded with Warp 4 and will have all Fixpaks applied through
WarpUp, the Indelible Blue Fixpak Installation product.
Object Desktop, Performance Plus and KopyKat will also be on the machines since
they are included in Indelible Blue's Standard Preloads.
And Lotus SmartSuite 1.5 will be installed as soon as the computer systems arrive
at WarpTech. "I have the SmartSuite copies right here, ready to go onto the
machines" says Esther.
Indelible Blue is known for its support of OS/2 and the quality of its OS/2 Preload
systems
"We'll do an immediate upgrade if you need more power" adds James.
"You'll be happy with any of these machines."
Craig Greenwood, WarpTech's Captain, explains how the Silent Auction works: "Take
a look at the machines, spend a little time with the preloaded SmartSuite and other
software, and decide what you're willing to spend. Then stop at the Silent Auction
booth and leave your name and bid. You might go home with a new OS/2 network-ready
machine."
OS/2 preloaded Indelible Blue systems are waiting for you. At WarpTech!

The 16 May 2000 issue of OS/2 eZine is now up and running! We've moved to a new
layout, so not all the bells and whistles (discussion forums, archives, etc.) are
available at the moment.
In the latest issue of OS/2 eZine:
- CD Burning for the Masses
- a review of Papyrus 8
- configuring email filters to filter out spam
- an overview of the problems associated with FixPak 13
CERT has issued an advisory regarding the improper validadion of SSL sessions
by Netscape Versions prior to 4.72. The text is at:
http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2000-05.html
I tested it on my machine with the latest drop of Netscape 4.6.1 with 128 bit
encryption and it presented the flaw. The same test on a 40 bit encryption version
of Communicator did not present the error.
In order to check if your version presents the problem follow the steps:
1 - Add the following line to your hosts. file: 204.198.134.88 www.verisign.com
2 - Close all Netscape sessions
3 - Open netscape and access https://www.verisign.com.
This will show a screen with a warning. This is the expected behaviour.
4 - Access https://www.thawte.com. Netscape will access the page normally since
the IP address you added to your hosts. file is theirs.
5 - Access https://www.verisign.com once
more. If your copy of Netscape has the bug, it will load Thawte's page as if it
were Verisign's and with no error messages.
Apparently the 40 bit encryption version of Communicator for OS/2 does not have
the flaw, although further tests would have to be done in order to prove this.
An IBM official has admitted there is a "problem" in TCP/IP that is
affecting InJoy (and possibly other programs), and that they are currently working
on it. For the complete USENET post see:

A major revision is about to take place...
Just in time for WarpTech...
WarpZip does it again!
AND THE BIG NEWS IS
WarpZip takes a major step forward in version 3.0 and will arrive just in time
for WarpTech. We have added support to open, extract and view files contained in
RAR, ARJ and LHA (LZH) archives. Support has also been added to perform directory,
directory tree or even complete partition searches for each of these formats as
well.
This is the latest and, what we hope will be, the most functional archiver solution
ever produced for the OS/2 family of operating systems. We had originally planned
to get this update out in February but over the past few months we have had our
share of delays. One thing remains certain... we have never stopped working for
the platform.
WARPZIP OVERVIEW
WarpZip is the latest in ZIP, RAR, ARJ, LZH and OS/2 "Packed" file
management. Beneath WarpZip's stunning interface you will find some revolutionary
and powerful functions that will save both time and effort and boost your productivity.
The integration of a directory tree as part of the interface makes unarchiving
complete archives or just selected file(s) from an archive to any directory as simple
as a 3 inch drag and drop, to ANYWHERE on your drives. If you don't have the directory
you want, create it! You can also open any folder from the directory tree for drag
and drop operations. Drag files into or out of archives. Delete any directory or
even complete directory trees from WarpZip!
Double clicking any "install.exe" entry in an archive automatically
opens the archive and starts the installation executable. When you're finished,
just click the "Clean up" button and WarpZip will not only delete the
mess but destroy all the temporary objects that were created in the process!

No more manually selecting a directory when downloading from NS. WarpZip's Download
PreProcessor allows your browsing sessions to sport one click downloads that obey
your every whim. It will selectively move your downloaded zip files to any directory
you choose, test them for integrity, virus test them and queue them up for later
review by WarpZip. All this is handled seamlessly in the background while you spend
your online time making your browser session count. When you're offline, WarpZip
will be waiting with the list of files you've downloaded. It will automatically
load them in it's queue on startup and present you with any test results you may
have requested.
PACKED FILES?
OS/2 Packed file extensions can have "_" or "@" or no extension
at all. So how do you locate them? Better yet, how do you locate and see what files
are archived inside of them? We are unaware of any software that will help you find
those almost unrecognizable OS/2 packed files except WarpZip. Of course, dragging
a file out of them or viewing them is as easy as working with a ZIP, RAR, ARJ or
LZH archive.
SEARCH FACILITIES
WarpZip will search a directory, directory tree, hard disk or CD for ZIP, RAR,
ARJ and LZH archives as well as OS/2 packed files. It will add or delete files from
archives, view files in archives or you can test run them (to do an installation,
for example) and let WarpZip clean up after you. You can test zip files or run virus
scans, view bitmaps, grep, build self extractors, copy, move, rename, delete...
well... you get the picture...

Window On WarpTech
The Weekly WarpTech 2000 Report
From the desk of Craig Greenwood, WarpTech Captain
We have loads of extracurricular fun planned for your three days at WarpTech.
First of all, the daily luncheon (free with most WarpTech registrations) is the
time the daily door prizes will be given away. Lunch is the big socializing hour
of the day, the time when you get a chance to relax a bit and make new friends --
and maybe win a prize.
Saturday afternoon at 4:30 is Warped Jeopardy! from Sundial Systems. This live
multimedia event puts you in a Hollywood game show atmosphere where a panel of OS/2
experts try to be first to come up with the proper question that matches the host's
OS/2 answer. Prizes for lucky contestants, plenty of chances to match wits with
those "experts" on the stage, and lots of OS/2 nostalgia.
And Saturday evening from 6:15 to 11:00 is the SCOUG - WarpTech OS/2 Rodeo at
Rawhide Western Town. This is a special sign-up event, so take a look at
http://www.scoug.com/rodeo.html
for more details.
Of course, you still get the main event -- three days of OS/2 technical presentations
(almost 50 sessions to choose from) on a wide variety of topics. They're all listed
at
http://www.warptech.org/WTSessions.html
Have you registered yet? You won't have to stand in the Registration line if
you're pre-registered -- just pick up your badge at the Pre-Registered window. Here's
the WarpTech Registration form:
http://www.warptech.org/WTRegForm.html
Still need a hotel room? Stay at the WarpTech convention resort site and save
almost 50% on your room. See
http://www.warptech.org/WTWigwam.html
Travel arrangements aren't yet made? Here's the WarpTech Travel page:
http://www.warptech.org/WTTravel.html
We'll see you for three full days of OS/2 -- Friday to Sunday, May 26-28 -- at
WarpTech 2000!
