SW: PDFMerge/2 Version 0.5.5

09 Apr 2005 12:00:57

From: Herwig Bauernfeind

PDFMerge/2 is a freeware tool to concatenate multiple PDF or PS files into
a single PDF file and eventually insert one or more empty pages.

PDFMerge/2 requires ePDF as it reuses some of ePDF's settings. There is no
installer currently, so please read the "readme.txt" that comes with
PDFMerge/2.

A few recently discovered bugs were fixed:
- Target filename is also created automatically if files were added via
d'n'd.
- D'n'd was only enabled for PDF not for PS files.
- Filenames with multiple "." were not shown in the file selection box.

What's new?
- Support ePDF's "pdflaunch" option
- The most important functionality of every program: The "About" box.

Under the hood there is nothing new in this release.

In case of problem, suggestions you are invited to join the suboffice
mailing list at netlabs or contact me directly.

Runs on: A recent version of eCS (OS/2), Rexx support,
Requires: VROBJ.DLL (VX-REXX runtime dll),
ePDF by F. Wochatz (http://www.subsys.de/ePDF/ )

This release can be downloaded from hobbes:
Now: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/pdfmerge055.zip
Later: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/new/pdfmerge055.zip

Net: We need your spare CPU cycles for Team Warped

08 Apr 2005 23:25:44

From: "Kevin McCoy"

All,

Did you know that some dedicated OS/2ers have been competeing on your
behalf for over 7 years, using our computers to solve some very difficult
cryptographic and mathematic problems?

Did you know that Team Warped is in the TOP 10 teams in the world in one
of the contests! This is out of thousands of teams, so its quite an honor
to be this high in the rankings! By our high rankings, we show the power
of OS/2 to the world - even when we are vastly outnumbered by other
operating systems.

Team Warped (OS/2) is currently working on two distributed.net contests.
The first one, called RC5-72 is attempting to crack a commonly used
cryptographic algorithm. The second is a mathematic algortithm called
OGR-25.

By "cracking", I don't mean *anything illegal*. It is simply a test of
what kind of computing power and time is required to figure out the
"password" of a sentence encrypted using RC5 encryption. Everyone knows
the text of the sentence. The hard part is trying out every possible
password. There are more possible keys than stars in the sky, so it takes
a while :-)

It is the OGR-25 contest where we are in the top 10, so we would like to
concentrate on that one.

Team Warped members donate computer time using a simple utility that runs
in the background on your Warp, eCS, windoze or Linux box. The utility
periodically downloads new blocks of possible "passwords" (keys actually)
and tries to decrypt the encrypted sentence or work on another block of
mathematic problems. Since the utility only uses your CPU when it is not
being used for other tasks, you will likely not know it is running.

To stay in the top 10, we need your help!

You can help by downloading the appropriate "client" or utility from:

http://www.distributed.net/download/clients.php

There are different clients for OS/2 (one client works on all OS/2
flavors) and other operating systems. Make sure you download the correct
one. Team Warped can use your help *even if some of your machines use
other operating systems*, but we do prefer OS/2 and its variants :-)

Next, _join Team Warped_, so that we get credit for the work your
computer(s) do. If you don't join, you aren't helping us in the rankings!

You will need to configure your client - send me an email and I will walk
you through the setup process. Its easy and only takes a few minutes.

The best computers to use are ones that stay on day and night, like
servers, firewall computers or ones you leave on all the time. I have 5
in my home that I leave on 24/7. The rest are computers I use at work. If
you shut the monitor off, computers use surprisingly little power. We'll
take any machine's work, even if it is only on for brief periods.

If you would like to monitor your computer(s) progress in the contest,
check out my automated statistics web site at:

http://www.idk.serveftp.net:81/cowboy/participant.html

Click the blue text to see graphs and other statistics - its quite
extensive. (I wrote the stats robot and HTML generator myself, BTW).

If you set up your client to send its log files to my site's robot, it
will automatically analyze them and draw graphs of your computer(s)
performance, your ranking against all other people in the world, and your
team rank. You can view your stats from anywhere in the world and keep
track of your computers health.

The robot updates the stats graphs and text every 15-20 minutes, 24/7/365,
so its always up to date.

I provide the stats web site as a free service to other Team Warped
members - there is *no* advertising and I do not collect *any* personal
information.

The best way to participate is to install the distributed.net client on as
many machines as you have access to. I have it running on ~38 computers
right now, but even your single computer can make a difference!

Team Warped wants you!... well your computers free time anyway :-)

Write me back personally or here on the list for more details. Did I
mention there is a cash prize for the person that cracks RC5? The odds of
winning are better in the Lotto, but what the heck - this is for the
higher glory of OS/2. :-)

Thanks for helping,

Kevin McCoy

Forwarded message from Heiko on Sun, 3 Apr 2005 20:04:14 UTC Posted on:
comp.os.os2.apps:

Some have asked for Info-Zip's ZIP 2.31.

For everyones benefit I uploaded the binaries to Hobbes (
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/archiver/zip231x2.zip ).

This is just a compile of the original binaries. It's untested but it
seems to work. So I don't take any responsibilities.

It's compiled with Visual Age C++ 3.08 and linked statically.

Have fun.

Event: OS/2 and eComStation Developers Workshop - Registration Now Open

06 Apr 2005 16:43:32

From: os2infoDESPAM@DESPAMgmx.net

I would like to inform all developers that plan to attend the OS/2 and
eComStation Developers Workshop 2005 that you can buy tickets now!

We use the Mensys online shop for registration. This shop is secure and
offers a number of different ways to pay the registration fee. While it
will be possible to register at the checkin desk, we strongly suggest not
doing this. Why? Because we have to know how many people are attending the
workshop! (at least, roughly!) We have the possibility to rent more or
larger rooms depending on the number of participants, but we can do this
only in advance! We know that some people make a last minute decision to
participate and that is OK with us. However, if you already know that you
want to attend, please use the online shop to register!

The final prices for the event are:
40 EUR for a two day registration
25 EUR for a one day registration

The tickets include the entrance fee for the workshop as well as snacks
and a limited number of non-alcoholic beverages during the workshop. In
addition, we offer Workshop Sponsor Units. The Workshop Sponsor Units will
be used to pay travel costs for developers that come from eastern Europe.
If you want to know more about this, please visit the Workshop Homepage.

Other News:
===========
We have added a number of different logos to the workshop homepage. Among
the normal workshop logo, we now offer a banner version and a small
version of the logo.

Three presentations were added to the schedule. Two of them will provide
some details about the Development Roadmap of eComStation and translation
practices that were used to provide the different national language
versions of eComStation. The third new presentation is called "OS/2 USB
Stack Development Guidelines" and is of particular interest to people that
want to develop or enhance USB drivers!

SW: IMAPD version 0.08 released

From: Peter Moylan

The IMAP add-on for the Weasel mail server has just been updated to
version 0.08. You can get it from
ftp://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/Weasel/imapd008.zip
This version is looking fairly solid; all known bugs have been fixed.

If you want to use this then you MUST first upgrade to Weasel version
1.73, because the Weasel Setup notebook is now used to control the IMAP
options.

SW: Mr. Message (AIM client) 4/3/2005 update

04 Apr 2005 09:02:21

Forwarded message from Marty on Mon, 4 Apr 2005
06:30:54 UTC Posted on: comp.os.os2.apps

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR
protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and
a variety of other clients).

It has been updated with the following changes:

* Splash screen is now controlled by the "Logo" setting in your OS/2
System Settings object.
* Changed so that the Session Manager is made visible again when a
session which had "Auto Minimize" set has failed to start up. * Put a
16 character length limit on the password to conform to AOL
limitations.
* Fixed password encoding in INI file to prevent truncation of passwords
with an ampersand ("&") in the second position or a "9" in the fifth
position. (Eg: "b&dp9ssword")
* Fixed login sequence for better error tolerance and recognition. * Fixed
a small memory leak when another user's screen name is
reformatted with spaces.
* Fixed possible error message pop-up for automatically added duplicate
buddy.

To download, please visit the new official Mr. Message web page:
http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage

If anyone has any new suggestions for the REXX interface or has written
some REXX scripts that they think can be generally useful, I'd love to
hear about them.

I will continue to post updates to USENET as well as updating the web
page.

SW: Virtual Pascal has died

03 Apr 2005 20:28:41

From: seanDESPAM@DESPAMoutpostbbs.net

Found this on Virtual Pascal's website:

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but I am sad to report that Virtual
Pascal has died a quiet death. It was born in 1995, and died in 2005 at
the ripe old age (for software) of 10 years.

What this means to you is that there is unlikely to be more releases of
VP, and that there certainly will be no releases with shiny new features
in them.

The lack of activity in VP development has been apparent for a long time,
and the inevitable conclusion is fairly unsurprising. The reasons for the
inactivity are many, but among the main ones are - VP's compiler codebase
has become obsolete. It's written in assembly code, and adding new
functionality to the compiler realistically requires that it's written in
a higher level language, - I don't have the time or even knowledge to
rewrite large portions of VP (Vitaly wrote the compiler and is generally
much cleverer than me), - Nobody else seems to have the time (or
knowledge) required either, - FreePascal is moving forward and is now
actually quite usable. Yes, it probably has its flaws, but it also has a
lot of people working on it - and VP does not.

So I guess that's it. If you are happy with VP and it works for you,
that's great: please feel free to continue using it. If, on the other hand
it doesn't work, there is a bug, or you really need a new feature, then
you should probably look elsewhere: FreePascal and Delphi are both fine
Pascal compilers that have moved well beyond where VP is ever going to
go...

And before you ask, VP will not be released as Open Source. I don't own
the copyright to all of the code (some of it is related to Borland's
source code) and you have to believe me when I tell you it's so
complicated you would not be able to do much with it even if it was
available. Sorry!

However, I'll keep running vpascal.com for a few more years and even reply
to the occasional forum post or email message.

It was good while it lasted: Thanks for all your support over the years!

(The message was written by Allan Mertner, one of the main VP developers
and vpascal.com webmaster.)
