I'm pleased to announce the release of Pronews/2 v1.55
Pronews/2 is a multithreaded NNTP Newsreader program for OS/2. This
release mainly fixes bugs discovered since the release of 1.54.
If you are upgrading from a release prior to 1.54 then you are strongly
urged to backup your existing filter files as the files have a different
on-disk format from 1.54 onwards. Failure to backup files *.FLT in
\pronews and \pronews\headers will mean it will be impossible to use your
filters if you should need to revert to a previous release. You should
also read the readme.txt file installed in the \pronews directory as this
covers changes and new features from prior releases as well as tips for
making Pronews/2 quicker.
You can find Pronews/2 1.55 on ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming (later
to be ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/internet/news/reader) as
pn2v155.zip.
Pronews/2 is shareware and all profits from its sale are donated to the
charity Save the Children.
New features and important changes
==================================
New in 1.55: you can SET PNALTDATE=1 to have the date column in the
article window include the year in the posting date field.
Pronews 1.55 is primarily a bug fix release to fix a problem that users
of the 16 bit TCP/IP stack have with posting new articles on systems
running a Warp 4 post fixpak 13 kernel. The 16 bit IP stack cannot
utilize high memory. There are another dozen or so fixes in 1.55 that are
not in 1.54 - the full list is in the fixed.txt file in your \pronews
directory after install.

This fixes the bugs reported in 3.0.3, and a couple other fixes; see the
changelog for more info:

We would love to hear from anyone who has a widescreen panel. If it's a
desktop chipset, it should be working in this version (let us know!).
If it's a laptop chipset and you are willing to risk a blank or corrupted
screen while testing, please open a ticket on the HelpDesk, so that we
can get a good variety of panel sizes tested. Of course, I should clarify
this by saying this is for ATI Radeon chipsets ONLY! Please don't bother
asking about anything else.

HI All,
Further to my previous announcement, I've refreshed my build of Python
2.4.1 that uses Innotek GCC 3.3.5 beta 4 as the compiler in place of EMX.
Updated build can be found at
http://smedley.info/python241-os2-innotekgcc.zip
It now includes more of the optional modules - now included are: gnu
readline and ncurses as well as the previously included zlib and crypt.
This is functional enough to work with bittorrent....
I will upload this to Hobbes once it's ironed out. Also please note that
my upload is limited to 16 k/s - so please only download this if you
intend to test it!
Any feedback appreciated - even if it's just to confirm that it's working
OK.
Cheers,
Paul.

It seems that IBM is transitioning out of Smalltalk by letting the company
Instantiations take over VisualAge for Smalltalk. Here is a copy of the
announcement posted by Instantiations about the transition:
"Instantiations and IBM are partnering to extend the viable, supported
product life of VisualAge Smalltalk applications. This new relationship is
an integral part of the larger IBM Smalltalk Transition and Roadmap
Strategy that ensures existing VisualAge Smalltalk customer business needs
and requirements are met. Under the new relationship Instantiations will
develop, market and support a new, modernized, Smalltalk product called VA
SmalltalkÖ."
The following link shows the announcement:
http://www.instantiations.com/VAST/default.htm
Concerning OS support this was listed in the FAQ section:
" Q: IBM supports many operating systems with VAST, will you continue to
support them all? A: At this time Instantiations will support all OS
versions of VisualAge Smalltalk. Over time we will assess the customer
need for the platforms and make decisions accordingly."
OS/2 lives on after all. Hoy Yah!

ZDnet article:
"Is IBM close to avenging OS/2's death?
-Posted by David Berlind @ 10:14 am
It's been almost 15 years since Microsoft jilted IBM's OS/2 at the altar,
kicking Big Blue while it was already down (financially), and exacerbating
the old school company's global state of disarray - one that outsider
(IBM's first ever) Lou Gerstner managed to turn around after he was
brought on board in 1993. One year later, a group of Gerstner's
handpicked technical advisors identified Sun's Java as the strategic
technology on which some of IBM's fortunes could be protected or regained
from Bill Gates, who, with a roadmap for Windows NT then firmly under his
belt, was beginning to turn his attention towards one of IBM's most
coveted domains: its data centers."

Note that this hasn't had much testing yet, but I finally got around to

Dear Bargain Hunters,
It's been a long time since my last "Warped Bargains" update, but this one
is surely worth the wait. It's a little hard to believe this one,
actually, but it's all true.
IBM put OS/2 Warp to use in many, many amazing places. One of the most
interesting, in my opinion, is the IBM S/390 Integrated Server. This
packaged system consists of the following:
- Pentium II running at 333 MHz with 512K Cache
- 128 MB of ECC Memory (for the Pentium II)
- Industrial-quality components and chasis
- 16 PCI slots (12 secondary and 4 terciary)
- 3 ISA slots
- 18 GB SSA (Serial Storage Architecture) hard disks (up to 16 hot swap)
- RAID 5 with background scrubbing
- N+1 power (including redundant power supply, fans, and built-in standby
battery power)
- 1 P/390E System/390 CPU with 256 MB of its own memory (nonexpandable)
- 2 ESCON channels
- 4 Parallel channels
- 10/100 Ethernet
- AGP Video (with 2 MB video memory)
- Adaptec Ultra Wide SCSI adapter
- 20X CD-ROM
- 4 mm DAT drive (DDS-3)
- USB, serial, parallel ports
- OS/2 Warp Server Version 4
Yes, fellow bargain hunters, the S/390 Integrated Server is a real IBM
mainframe. The P/390E CPU is rated at about 7 MIPS and supports the
390/ESA (31-bit) mainframe instruction set. This server actually runs two
operating systems: one running on the P/390E processor (i.e. your
mainframe operating system) and the other OS/2 Warp Server. OS/2 Warp
Server takes care of input/output for the P/390E processor. (And you can
also run anything else -- Klondike Solitaire, Firefox for OS/2, whatever.)
The S/390 Integrated Server is a real, honest-to-goodness mainframe
processor. It can run 31-bit z/OS (up to Version 1.5, I believe), TPF,
VSE, VM, and Linux S/390.
So why do I mention this server? Well, IBM has this bad boy on sale in its
"Certified Used" online store. You can own one of these rare (and formerly
very pricey -- we're talking six figures) systems for the low low price of
just $6,000 U.S. including shipping. That's right: you can buy a real IBM
mainframe for 6Gs!
Here's the web site where you can find this system, model 3006-B01:
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/HelpDisplay?storeId=1&catalogId=-840&langId=-1&subject=2576400
including 36 GB of disk space (usable after RAID-5).
I should say this up front: with the exception of Linux, which is freely
available (Debian, for example), mainframe operating systems and other
software products are almost always licensed. Some of them may cost a
considerable amount of money, depending on what you want to do. And some
of them are essentially rented month to month. So your software expenses
could be considerable.
Also, 31-bit technology is falling out of favor in the mainframe world.
(IBM introduced 64-bit zSeries systems in 2000, and more and more software
is taking advantage of 64-bit, such as z/OS 1.6 and DB2 V8 for z/OS.)
Please note that this system is 31-bit.
Still, all that said, wow, what a bargain! If you'd like to own a real
mainframe you just can't beat this price. Believe it or not, you can even
run WebSphere Application Server V6.01 for z/OS on this system -- slowly,
perhaps, but it'll run! This system would be perfect for code developers,
mainframe enthusiasts, and other individuals who'd like to point to the
fact that they own (and use) a real mainframe. Just be sure you know what
you're getting into -- especially in terms of software costs, and
especially if you want to run more than S/390 Linux -- before purchasing
this system.
Note that this system does not require special power, raised floor,
cooling system, etc. If you have those things, great, but they're not
required for this itty bitty mainframe.
And it runs OS/2 Warp Server as the "partner" operating system! How cool
is that?
Now, what if 36 GB is not enough disk storage? Well, you could add up to
13 more 18 GB SSA hard disks. If you can find them, that is. But you may
have another option, available via the same Web site listed above. How'd
you like to own your very own IBM Enterprise Storage System (a.k.a.
"Shark")? Well, those are on sale, too. If you get an ESCON-attached
system (which would be compatible with this system), you can buy a used 1
TB Shark for $42,000. That's not a lot of money for 1 TB of mainframe
storage. (Click on "Storage" from the Certified Used store to see the
Sharks for sale.) There's some other possible ESCON-attachable storage
options also listed. And some tape drives, too, if you need those.
OK, I'll stop there. Granted, $6,000 is a lot of money if all you want is
an OS/2 Warp- or eComStation-based PC. (It's especially a lot of money for
a Pentium II 333 MHz.) But it's very inexpensive indeed for a 31-bit
mainframe processor as recent as the P/390E. (Could you imagine opening up
your own little data center? And even attach it to the Internet? Yes, you
could.) Some of you may be enthusiastic about owning this unique system,
others may not care. Either way, I hope you enjoyed this edition of Tim's
Warped Bargains. Until next time.....

The ideal tool for making old code multilingual!
msgc is a message tool that enables you to easily replace strings buried
in your source code with strings grabbed from a message file. The msgx
portion provides an open source replacement function for sprintf, and is
freeware. The msgc compiler is used to convert a file full of strings

(now you may drop folders to this field)
- fixed label handling (in some cases it was possible
to add dupes for watermark, distiller and profile
labels)
- fixed bug with font handling for watermarks on Object
Rexx (I think Object Rexx compatibility is broken since 2b19).
- temporary watermark files will be deleted after PDF
creation
This is only a new 'ePDF.exe', you have to copy this file into your
existing ePDF installation directory.

In last weeks I started up a little new project called 'JPG Info'.
The main feature is to read meta informations (comments, EXIF) from JPGs
and write own comments to JPG files in an object oriented and platform
independent way.
For a full description what 'JPG Info' can do for you, you may have a
look at the readme file: >
http://www.subsys.de/JPGInfo/download/readme.txt
It is recommended to have a look at this file (it is also included in the
download archive).
This is the first public version, and it works quite good here with JPGs
from my digital camera, but use it better only with copies of your JPG
files.
Download:
If you have any comments, sugestions or bugreports, you are invited to
join the subOffice mailinglist at netlabs. You will find more
informations how to join the list in the file support.txt.
kind regards

You'd think I'd get it right one day...
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/newview2_16_4.zip
later
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/misc/newview2_16_3.zip
Apologies to my translators who as good beta testers DID identify these
two problems, but I forgot to fix them:
V2.16.4
- Fixed doubled table of contents
- Fixed search locations list duplicating each time shown
newview.dll is located either by libpath, or in the same directory as
newview.exe. By default it is installed in the app dir (standalone) or
x:\os2\dll\ (complete replacement).
NewView is a free replacement for the original OS/2 or eComStation online
help system.
Major enhancements are:
- New user interface (split window)
- Select and copy direct from window
- Easy to use global (all files) search
- Remembers size & position
- Most recently used files list
- Smooth scrolling display
- Current topic always highlighted in contents
- Can go forward as well as back in history
- Options for fonts, colors and more
- Annotate help files
- Bookmarks
- Fully resizeable
- Automatic web, ftp and email links (uses default WPS browser)
- Drop files to open
- Open additional files
- Automatic language selection
- Automatic index creation
- Enhanced file dialog with help file titles

From: kimhDESPAM@DESPAMos2world.com
It is known that OS/2 isn't well supported by companies that make software
or by individual developers, and OS/2 faces a high possibility of being
replaced from the market. That's why we are making this petition to IBM so
the OS/2 Technology can be freely distributed and developed around the
world. We understand that making OS/2 Open source will be beneficial for
the IBM customers knowing also the problems that IBM can face with the
private source code but also offering a solution with the OS/2 Developer
community.
Making OS/2 Open Source will benefit all IBM customers that had invested
on this OS. Customer that are willing to continue using OS/2 will get the
benefit to have an open OS that will be continuos developed by individual
developers and/or software companies, their ownership fees will decrease
and they will have the security to have use an OS that is going to stay
for a longer time in the market (following the Linux example). Also
customer that are willing to migrate to other platforms will find
beneficial to have OS/2 open source, with that it will be easier to
migrate their programs or make an OS/2 interpreter or emulator for the
transition.
We know that IBM faces a problem of making OS/2 Open Source because of the
private source from third companies. What we ask to IBM is to release as
much of the source that can be possible and list the OS/2 components that
need an Open Source replacement. With a list of components that need to be
replaced companies interested on OS/2 or individual developers can create
Open Source software to fill this "holes" in the OS.
IBM will also find beneficial the open source of OS/2. The OS/2 Community
can freely develop Open Source software just like it had been happening to
Linux. IBM can take advantage of this and have less expenses on the
mantaince, and getting improvements for developers around the world.
Conclusions
IBM is preaching and supporting on this days the use of open standards and
says that the benefits of Open Source software are many. IBM understand
that open source software are directly beneficial to the customers, that's
why IBM is supporting a 110% Linux.
For either customer that want to keep OS/2 and from those who are thinking
to migrate from it, making OS/2 Open Source will be a fine strategy.
We also have a OS/2 community of developers that had made several open
source software for OS/2 and they are also willing to stay in this
platforms.
To get the biggest impact of this petition we kindly ask you to forward
this information to news pappers, magazines and other sites on the
internet that might have the interest of this petition (or at least has
the interest of posting the an article about this petition).
