I've just released a package of fixes for Object Desktop v1.5 & 2.0. This
package, named ODFIX.ZIP:
- enables Zip Folders to use recent versions of InfoZip's Unzip
- turns on the CPU meter when running Warp v4.5x
- prevents WPS lockups when dragging over Control Center
It is currently at hobbes in /pub/incoming and should end up at:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/patches/odfix.zip
You can also get it from:
http://e-vertise.com/misc/odfix.zip
Also included in the package is a file unlock/replace/backup utility named
OLDNEWBK.EXE. Unlike similar utils, it should work with any type of file,
not just exes & dlls. Plus, its commandline syntax is easy to remember
:-)

IBM Web Browser for OS/2 V2.0.3 is also now available on the eComStation
download site. http://www.ecomstation.com
Note also the following about this release of the IBM Web Browser:
about: in this version shows:
Mozilla/5.0 (OS/2; U; Warp 4.5; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040603
This build is based on the Mozilla 1.6 version code and unlike previous
versions which used the VAC compiler this uses GCC and requires the latest
GCC runtime ( libc-0.5.1.exe ) from the Innotek site -
http://download.innotek.de/gccos2/runtime/libc-0.5.1.exe I believe this
has to be installed even before the installer is run, and it is not
included as part of the IWB download.

This is a good example of where someone could start helping the Mozilla
for OS/2 project.
I did very little testing of this release, but I noticed some OS/2
specific issues.
For instance, the extensions dialog looks different on OS/2.
If people could start beating on this and find problems for other people
to look at, that would be great.
I'll post build instructions for firefox tomorrow if anyone wants to build
it.
This is NOT a static build (one big EXE) - I couldn't get that working on
OS/2.

OS2Voice -
Your news post "Net: Ask Macromedia to allow Flash 7 for OS/2" has
certainly caught our attention. And while I understand that there are many
people who would like to have the Flash Player 7 for OS/2. Flash Player 7
for OS/2 does not exist. Macromedia has not created Flash Player 7 for
OS/2, and we are not preventing any third party from releasing it. None of
our licensees have ported Flash Player 7 to OS/2.
I certainly understand that folks are frustrated, especially since they
think we are holding something from them. I want to personally assure you
we are not holding back the Flash Player product from the OS/2 community.

From: "Serenity Virtual Station - Announcement List"
Serenity Systems has announced the availability of the Open Beta program
last week. You can find the pressrelease on the beta page:
http://www.serenityvirtual.com/beta/
You are now able to join the beta program and participate in the
development and refinement of this product. The cost to participate in the
beta is $50US and will be used as a credit, should you choose to purchase
the product when it becomes generally available.
As a bonus, beta testers will receive an additional $20US discount off
the Suggested Retail Price. The current planned pricing is SRP $99US for
a single host platform and SRP $199US for a product which includes all
supported hosted versions.
The following products are currently part of the SVISTA Beta Program:
* SVISTA for Windows
* SVISTA for Linux
* SVISTA for OS/2
* (SVISTA for FreeBSD is planned for a later date)
SVISTA supports running of different operating systems, or multiple
instances of the same operating system, as "guest desktops" inside the

multiple desktops on the same computer at the same time.

Dear Bargain Hunters,
I've been keeping a close eye on the prices for 802.11b wireless adapters
and related equipment for my eComStation system. The prices keep coming
down.
First of all, please be aware that 802.11b's WEP encryption standard is
not secure. It's better than nothing, but it's got problems (which you
can read about lots of places). So for really secure connections, be sure
to use a VPN (like Injoy) and/or HTTPS (SSL).
Second, I'm still a big fan of the wireless bridges I have mentioned in
the past. So please keep those in mind. Those are coming down in price,
too.
But I've recently (and successfully) experimented with the IBM High Rate
Wireless Mini PCI Adapter (part number 22P7701) in the IBM ThinkPad T30
(and will probably try some other ThinkPad model soon), and it works like
a charm with the IBMPRISM.EXE driver available through Software Choice
(subscription only). These adapters seem to be rather plentiful and
affordable now. Use http://froogle.google.com to search for this part
number and you should find vendors selling them for around $50.
(Froogle's lowest price sorting doesn't work right, so look through all
the pages for best results.) You can also occasionally find them on eBay.
This adapter also works like a charm with almost every distribution of
Linux -- I tested SuSE 9.1 -- and Windows (ugh). It installs inside
"wireless-ready" IBM ThinkPads. It's an Intel/Xircom OEMed part.
Be sure to use the WiFiStat utility that comes with the driver to
configure WEP, SSID, etc. (PROTOCOL.INI settings don't seem to do much,
actually.) You should also delay DHCPSTRT until after bootup -- don't run
it in \MPTN\BIN\SETUP.CMD, for example. (On my system I've configured
multiple CONFIG.SYS files that I can pick during bootup. If I hit the
letter W, I get the wireless configuration.)
I'm using the USR 8011 wireless router I mentioned some time ago -- a good
bargain find that some of you got, too. FYI, interestingly it accepts the
SMC Europe firmware, Version 1.96h3, designed for the Barricade 7004AWBR.
Looks like the same Taiwanese company made both. (I like SMC's firmware
better than USR's. It actually manages to hold a connection with WEP
encryption enabled.)
I can also use eComStation wirelessly at Starbucks now, surfing and
working while listening to KCAA's feed of Air America Radio. Pretty
amazing.
In other news, there are some great printer deals that I've seen recently.
The Epson C84 color inkjet printer -- works with the C80 driver -- seems
to be in deep discount right now at places like Office Depot. (The C84
has both parallel and USB ports, and that's handy.) So is the Brother
HL-1440, which Staples had recently well under $100. These deals come and
go, so keep monitoring shopping sites like http://www.fatwallet.com for
details.
Finally, I'd like to put in a plug for Ghostscript/GSview for PDF
creation, viewing, and printing. It's well worth the modest registration
price, and you can try it first. Looks like the authors fixed the
remaining printing problems I was having, so now I can wirelessly print
PDFs from GSview to my USR router-attached HP LaserJet. From my front
porch. Wow.
I have no affiliation with any of these companies. Caveat emptor.
