I've just experimented with a very new PCI modem from ACTIONTEC. It is a real modem, NOT a software, winmodem, hsp, etc. psuedo modem emulator. It works in DOS, OS2, LINUX, W3.x, W9x, etc. It was simple to install and I had NO problems except for PCI slot oversight in my haste to install. On my system, the PCI slots have various IRQ's and I installed the modem in a PCI slot with IRQ=5; a conflict with my soundcard. I just switched PCI slots to IRQ=11 and all was OK. Detail info on this modem is at:

Version 5.d of DreckBak for OS/2 has been uploaded to my site, as well as Hobbes, BMT, and others. Full German Language version will be posted in a few days. Documentation now also in INF format. Refinements and enhancements.

Don't risk a hard drive crash with no reliable way to restore your system. You need no special devices or expensive software. DreckBak for OS/2 Hard Drive Backup/Restore Suite, only requires some space on a device that is seen by OS2 as a Drive Letter (f:). GREAT for removable media drives and large hard disks. Compression provided by Info-Zip, Two separate file integrity tests, full logging, multiple exclusion filters, full automation, great tech support, and smart-alec comments are just the beginning. See why Warp City suggests this program. ("a keeper.")

Available at the support site, BMT Micro, Hobbes, "Your local drug store...... It's from Kansas."

VyperHelp 1.05 is released. 1.05 has fixed several bugs in 1.04 and is now available for registration.

VyperHelp is a visual outliner and editor for creating online help for OS/2 and Windows-based systems. It generates IPF files, which can be compiled into OS/2-based HLP and INF files. It also generates WinHelp project source, including HPJ, CNT, RTF and HH files. A command-line conversion program is included, which allows conversion to and from OS/2 help and WinHelp, as well as RTF printable output.

The program allows a 30 day trial use period. During this period, it inserts promotional text at the end of each section. Registration is $49. For more information and download and ordering links, see:

I have found Savage3D / Savage4 OS/2 drivers version 6.10.05 posted on the IBM PC Company Website BBS. Since they are difficult to find with a file name of e51t01a.exe, I changed the name to s3d61005.zip and re-uploaded them to ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/incoming. They were posted earlier by a gentleman from Europe, but the file was incomplete.

Adrian Gschwend
@ OS/2 Netlabs

---snip---

Hi all,

I wanted to let the OS/2 developer community know how they can foster the development of new, native OS/2 applications, including SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2.

wxWindows is a free, open source, cross platform C++ GUI framework (see http://www.wxwindows.org). wxWindows currently supports Windows 3.1/95/98/NT, Unix with GTK/Motif/Lesstif, with Mac, OS/2 and SciTech MGL versions underway.

SciTech Display Doctor's existing hard-coded Windows 9x user interface is now being re-written using wxWindows. This will enable users of OS/2 and other alternative operating systems to have the exact same, full featured user interface that SciTech offers its Windows customers.

Here is where you can help. In order to get the OS/2 support completed in a reasonable time frame, we need some OS/2 gurus to help out with the wxWindows OS/2 port. If you want to participate, please contact the lead developer of the wxWindows OS/2 port, David Webster (dwebster@bhmi.com).

wxWindows will make it a piece of cake for developers to support OS/2. wxWindows enables developers who favor OS/2 to support and develop in their favorite OS, while at the same time targeting other OSs to maximize their revenue potential.

The time is right for a solution like wxWindows because many developers are looking for ways to target Linux, Mac and other alternative operating systems to complement their Windows-based products. wxWindows allows developers not only to support all those operating systems, but OS/2 and others as well.

Thanks for your help!!

The June survey "Which Office Suite do you use ?" has finished. OS2.org asked you which Office Suite you are using, and 402 users took part. Thank you very much. The majority of 58% is using StarOffice and and as second 27% are using Lotus Smartsuite. All others are far behind. You can take a look at the whole result in the Survey Archive.

Today we started a new survey, asking you "How long are you using OS/2 ?". We ask all of you to take part, and let this survey be as accurate as possible.

URL: http://en.OS2.org/forum/survey/

The OS2.org team wants to thank everybody supporting us in the last months. We are thankful for any help and comment we get, and of course for every visit you make at our pages.

OS2.org has reached the 100,000 pageviews mark in June 1999. This was possible by adding more and more features, you all requested. But we won't stop - no, we will enhance the pages more and more to fit your needs and wishes.

The latest enhancement is part of the news area. Now you can add a comment to any news.

We are looking forward to passing the next magic mark :-)

There was an article posted on WarpCast reference those nice people at Nvidia now supporting OS/2 with their TNT2 chipset. One word of warning though, at present the level of GRADD that the Nvidia driver seems to be based on doesn't give any option in the OS/2 System Notebook for setting refresh rates. Not so much of a problem if you're using this card on a smaller monitor with lower resolutions, but somewhat uncomfortable on the eyes at >1024x768 when you're stuck at 60Hz. On the plus side it's a very nice piece of hardware, quicker than my existing Matrox Millennium G200, but the 60Hz refresh may cause you problems.

IRC Chat is another great way for Warpheads to stay in touch, learn about new advances in Warp-dom, and help each other with those occasional problems. The Southern California OS/2 Users Group hosts a Help Desk chat on Mondays at 7PM Pacific (GMT-7) and an Internet SIG on Wednesdays, on the #SCOUG channel of the webbnet system. See www.webbnet.org for details on connecting to their excellent system. SCOUG works closely with VOICE (www.os2voice.org) in supporting their excellent team. VOICE and SCOUG (www.scoug.com/chat) both have resources to help you get connected with the Warped World.

The #SCOUG channel will host a new meeting this Saturday at 8AM (1500 GMT) to try and get our European and Australian (yeah, it's late there, but the word here is you folks are pretty tough) friends online with us. We'll focus on operating system issues, including previews of the Warpicity project, which will be the subject of the VOICE Speakup meeting on July 12th. Hope you can make it.

Just found this in USENET.

Information regarding which Fixtool (CSF) package to use with FP11:

===================================================

We couldn't get FT 1.41 out in time. Had a late problem, and later discovered that a component we use for version checking was re-built after our last build and took out the fix FixTool needed. When we rebuilt, we had back level code, so it delayed us.

In any case, FT 1.41 doesn't have any 'major' fixes in it with respect for FP 11, or FP 41. FT 1.40 will work fine with it as well. There were some changes needed for the LAN FP's that required FT 1.41. If you are using DISKETTES, I'd strongly suggest FT 1.41, it has diskette handling performance enhancement.

For some additional information, read the READ.ME file for the change brought into 1.41

Don Eitner, author of The 13th Floor website and enthusiast of TrueSpectra's Photo>Graphics Pro for OS/2, today released another significant upgrade to his free, open-source PGPro Scripts. Version 3.0 includes a third REXX script for creating "star burst" effects as well as several feature enhancements and bug fixes from earlier versions.

PGPro Scripts v3.0 can be downloaded from:

http://www.tstonramp.com/~freiheit/PGPro_Scripts_30.zip

CHANGES IN V3.0
3DShadow.cwx - Fixed a bug where cancelling the script did not return the project to its original unit of measurement as well as a bug that allowed for 0 or 1 shadow instances, which would lead to an error.

GreetingCard.cwx - Now maintains user-defined color for card text. Also added option to emboss text.

Starburst.cwx - Creates a starburst within the current project in a user defined color. Can also size the starburst to sit snugly behind a selected text object.

Hello to the whole OS/2-Group.

A few months ago I made a beta-test for SecureDesktop. The GA will be available in 4 weeks (german version), the english version will follow a week later.

SecureDesktop is modular security system which is based on IBMs SES-API-Framework (Securitiy Enabling Services) and therefore it will run with Warp3 + FP17 or Warp4.

What is SecureDesktop (SD):
SD contains six modules:

  1. Multi-User Desktop: every user has his own desktop with folders, programs, icons, shadows, backgounds, ... Easy administration, 32 groups, password protection for each desktop
  2. ClientLogon: Every user is - dependend on his rights - logged on the network
  3. DistributedWPS: "The WPS goes with the User". For a user it is uninteresting where he will logon, he has always HIS WPS.
  4. File/Directory-Protection: This module is under development. The reason is that I have to develop a filesystem but IBM did not send me any information about KPI until now.
  5. TCP/IP-Package: WPS will distributed over TCP/IP, user dependend web-filters (like web-washer from Siemens)
  6. RemoteLogon: Security on remote logon users

Licence fees (all prices in German Marks):
(*) For private users (up to 3 users ) it will be costfree (you will get a key for installing the package)
(*) For private users who need more:
10 user: DM 50,- (the whole package)
20 user: DM 100,- (the whole package)
(*) For commercial users:
10 user: DM 70,- (the whole package)
30 user: DM 210,- (the whole package)
no limit: DM 560,- (the whole package)

Where can you get it?
The package is delivered only on demand! Please send an email, postcard or what ever.

June 29, 1999 Source: Jan van Wijk; Author of DFSee (dfsee@fsys.demon.nl)

I just released version 2.99 of the DFSee utility wich includes the first step to a more friendly user-interface.

This text-based windowing system implements a command-line with a history buffer so previous commands can be recalled and edited easily.

Also, the output goes to a large scrollable window so you can page back and forth.

For those of you that don't know DFSee yet, DFSee is an FDISK, display, analysis and recovery tool for disks and filesystems.

Because of the targeted use for DFSee it is a command-line and text-only utility (no GUI). At the moment an OS/2, Win-NT and DOS (+ Win-95) version exist.

Version 2.99 also has some smaller functional updates and fixes several minor bugs.

I would very much like to hear some experiences you have with DFSee and the new user-interface, either positive or negative.

You can get DFSee from my web-site:

http://www.fsys.demon.nl

With some delay, it will be on HOBBES as well ...

Show your Support
Warpstock 99

The 3rd annual Warpstock show and celebration will be held in Atlanta, GA on October 16th and 17th, 1999 and V.O.I.C.E. (Virtual OS/2 International Consumer Eduaction) will again be present.

The 1998 show in Chicago was the 1st Warpstock Event that V.O.I.C.E. was involved in (as a group) and, frankly, we all had a blast. To show our support for this premier event, V.O.I.C.E. arranged for show discounts on Power Boot, the Boot Manager alternative, and we gave away 2 passes and 1 night in the hotel in a drawing held in a V.O.I.C.E. meeting in IRC.

This year, we are taking steps to further involve V.O.I.C.E. as an active supporter of Warpstock.

The Event Location announcement was made during a special V.O.I.C.E. Speakup in IRC back in March.

V.O.I.C.E. has already purchased an exhibition booth that comes with 2 passes, and 2 tickets to the Saturday evening Social Event "OS/2 Has Not Left The Building". One of these passes and party tickets will be given away in a drawing, along with 1 night in the Sheraton Gateway hotel during a special Speakup event to be held in July (You must be a V.O.I.C.E. member to be eligible for the drawing). The second pass and party ticket is reserved for another project.

Thanks to Timothy Sipples and IBM, V.O.I.C.E. will donate 1 copy of OS/2 Warp Server for e-Business to Warpstock to be used by the event committee in setting up the Warpstock Network Server at this and future Warpstock events.

V.O.I.C.E. has already announced a donation of $500.00 to Warpstock to be used for the Saturday evening party. It is our hope that this donation will help to offset the costs of the party and dinner, and free up funds that the Warpstock committee can put to use elsewhere in the event budget.

Now, here's where someone else can join with V.O.I.C.E. and show their support for Warpstock.

The "V.O.I.C.E./Warpstock Challenge"

We don't want to be the only OS/2 User Group supporting Warpstock. Warpstock is an event for ALL OS/2 users to come together to talk about and learn about OS/2 and OS/2 applications. So here's your chance to show your support for your favorite Operating System and the people who support it and develop for it.

We'd like to see at least one more group donate $500.00 to Warpstock to be used for the Saturday evening party. That would make a $1000.00 donation to help offset the cost of the social event, and free up $1000.00 to be used elsewhere in the Warpstock 99 Budget. Think of what that $1000.00 could be used for. Off the top of my head, I can envision a better and faster connection to the Internet for all exhibitors to make use of.

But wait .... it gets better!

If one more group will donate $500.00, V.O.I.C.E. will match that donation. That's a total of $1500.00 donated to Warpstock to help fund the Social Event. And a total of $1500.00 in the Warpstock Budget that can be used on something other than a party.

Please, join V.O.I.C.E. in co-sponsoring this event.

If you are interested in joining us, please e-mail me (Dan Casey) at:

abraxas@os2voice.org

Anyone in attendance last year, in Chicago, can attest to how much fun we all had. Anyone who missed it, well all I can say is "Don't miss this one"!

I have completed release 1.0 of Unisched, now finally with an English version of the documentation. Unisched is a scheduler software that can run actions in the case of events (time, file system, and others). Unisched is specially optimized for use in a Fidonet node environment and, being an OS/2 VIO application, might not be too attractive for non-Fido related persons. But nevertheless it has some features that other schedulers lack, so you might want to give it a try. Unisched can be obtained from:

Well, I haven't sent anything out in quite a while so I thought I would drop everyone a line and say that I think everything's going pretty well for our little team. If you haven't looked lately, check out the team status at:

http://tally.distributed.net/rc5-64/

We're the #3 team overall and usually in the top 3 or 4 every day, which is impressive, most impressive. Unfortunately, it seems that some of the teams are managing to seriously outgrow us. Anandtech and Slashdot.Org are doubling our keyrate. Now, we can either roll over or we can take it as a challenge. Now, everyone go out and preorder a new 600 MHz AMD Athlon (formerly called the K7). Make that 2. :) OK, seriously though, tell all your friends about d.net and sign them up for Team Warped.

There are new projects coming down the pipe at d.net, and they're talking about a way to "normalize" the stats so that team participation will be measured across all projects. I think this is cool because it will allow us to keep the team together but will allow us to partipate in the project that we each find most rewarding.

Anyway, that's about it for now. No news on a PM version of the client. Perhaps someone with some PM programming experience and tools would like to write one?
