Topic: Desktop Publishing under OS/2
Date: Wednesday, July 14, 1999
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Location: IBM Building - 590 Madison Avenue, New York, NY
(A very well air conditioned building on the southwest corner of 57th Street &
Madison Avenue.)
No you're not seeing things, you can actually do desktop publishing under OS/2.
We'll explore a few means of doing so including a new program called "Maul
Publisher."
If you want to get a jump on your questions, check out these two web pages:
+ BMT Micro's Page on Maul Publisher - http://www.bmtmicro.com/catalog/maul.html
+ The developer's (Peter Koller) web page - http://perso.wanadoo.fr/maisonanglais/
A quote from the Developer's web page: "Maul Publisher provides master pages,
frame style sheets, text style sheets, title extraction styles, full undo and redo.
Maul Publisher is modular and can be expanded with custom modules for a multitude
of tasks such as importing or exporting other data formats, colour management, or
scanning for example."
See you there....
Official Announcement from OS/2VOICE
From the Office of the Secretary:
------------------
Warpicity Speakup
VOICE has arranged with Larry Finkelstein and the OS2 Central Forum to co-sponsor
the Warpicity Speakup which will take place on Compuserve. Compuserve doesn't use
IRC protocols, so please think of it going in along terms of our continuing mission
to boldly go where no Speakup has gone before. :)
Warpicity itself is a thoughtful and interesting approach to software development
and distribution.. Lynn Maxson's article in the June 1999 VOICE Newsletter can be
found here:
http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0699H/vnewsf2.htm
How to get there:
Compuserve conferencing functions are available to nonmembers running either
Netscape 2.02 or Communicator/2 provided Java 1.1.6 or higher is installed and correctly
configured.
From http://go.compuserve.com/os2central
the server will redirect your browser to a page that serves as the entrance to the
OS2Central Forum (The precise URL may vary depending on your location and method
of connection.) From, there, click on the "Chat" button to load the Java
applet. The Warpicity Speak-up session will be held in conference room 20. To get
there, select 20 Warpicity from the room list and then click Enter to bring up a
chat window that will look reasonably familiar.
Users entering through the applet will show up as {Guests}, and will not be able
to change their names. For Compuserve members only, this limitation can be overcome
by logging into the conference via OS2-CIM, which is bundled in the BonusPak of
every edition of Warp 3 or higher. Compuserve membership is not required to simply
attend the conference.
This means that this Speakup will not take place on Webbnet! However, VOICE members
will be multitasking from our usual Webbnet location to assist with help and realtime
instructions on how to access the Compuserve forum.
We recommend that users not familiar with the technology visit the conference
site ahead of time briefly to get familiar with the medium.
OS/2 Warp System Requirements:
OS/2 Warp 3 with IAK or OS/2 Warp 4
Java 1.1.6 runtime correctly configured or higher. (The Java version 1.0.2 provided
with the base Warp 4 installation that installs by default into \JAVAOS2 will definitely
not work.)
Netscape Navigator 2.02 or Netscape Communicator 4.04
Minimum Fixpak 5 for Warp 4
Minimum Fixpak 37 for Warp 3
We hope everyone interested will attend. Not only would a large attendance encourage
Compuserve overall to take greater notice of their OS/2 support efforts, but it
also builds stronger links between our community and our friends and counterparts
at OS2Central. We'll see you there.
The Speakup will be held on Monday, July 12, 1999 at 8:00PM Eastern (0:00GMT).
The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) will be next
Saturday, July 17, at 9:00 AM PDT, at the IBM offices located in Plaza Tower, 600
Anton Blvd., Costa Mesa, on the 2nd floor.
Sundial Systems returns to SCOUG
SCOUG likes Sundial Systems (http://www.sundialsystems.com) because they always
do a great presentation. So we are looking forward to another meeting in that grand
tradition. Expect to see a little of what's current and a lot of what's coming from
the company that brings you Relish, Mesa 2, Clearlook, DBExpert, and Rover. (Whew
- that's a mouthful!)
After the presentation we'll have Q&A to get your computer problems resolved.
Then a raffle and the Saturday SIG meetings:
General Interest Group - will look at IFS add-ons for OS/2.
Programming SIG - Peter Skye will continue his explanation and demonstration
of device drivers.
Afterwards: No-host lunch and friendly chat at TGI Friday's across the street
or another local restaurant.

See how an all-OS/2 business works!
by Mark Kerzner
Lumature is a lighting and furniture store in Scottsdale that uses OS/2 as the
only operating system. In 1994, we installed Warp Connect on all workstations, and
shortly afterwards the Novell 3.x server was replaced with OS/2 Warp Server Advanced.
At the July meeting of the Phoenix OS/2 Society, Inc, on Tuesday, July 13, LUMATURE
will be opening its doors -- including the door to the computer room! See first
hand how each and every aspect of this business is run on networked computers running
on OS/2 Warp. From point-of-sale workstations, to graphics workstations that create
all labels, price tags and advertisements, to office/accounting computers, you will
observe how this well OS/2 can run a business.
But we already know all that, didn't we?
Light fantastic
Experience how every light fixture, table lamp, and wall light in the showroom
can be controlled from "virtual" switches created on workstation screens.
Using the shareware HOUSE/2, every display fixture can be turned on, off, or dimmed
from the showroom computers. Every light can be addressed individually or as a member
of a group.
For us, this has proven to be the best method of showroom lighting control ever
devised. August 10 will be the first anniversary of the opening of this showroom,
and of this new system.
Compared to the traditional direct-wiring of each light to a manual wall switch
for a showroom this size, our initial savings with this computerized lighting control
system was more than $70,000. When you have hundreds of display locations in a commercial
building, with very high ceilings, it involves running metal pipe conduit from each
fixture to its own wall switch. With many locations, the dollars add up very quickly.
See this amazing system and try it yourself !
When and where
LUMATURE is at 15620 North Scottsdale Rd, north of Greenway and about 1/2 mile
south of Bell, on the west side of the street. Using other furniture stores as landmarks,
that's north of Robb & Stucky and just south of Thomasville.
Although the LUMATURE showroom closes to the public at 6:00pm, the doors will
be open to POSSI meeting attendees, and staff will be there to demonstrate and answer
questions. And also -- just in case you see some items in the store that you would
like to own -- ask Mark about special pricing discounts for POSSI members and guests.
The Phoenix OS/2 Society (http://www.possi.org)
is the world's largest user group devoted to IBM's OS/2 operating system, with members
in 16 countries and 48 US States. Our intent is to enable OS/2 users to help one
another get the most out of the operating system. Membership includes a subscription
to the monthly print magazine, extended attributes. You can request a free sample
of the magazine from the Society's Web site.
The Philadelphia OS/2 SIG web site at http://www.phillyos2.org

*** JUNE FEATURE PRESENTATION ***
-- MP3 Audio Player for OS/2 --
The main feature at the June meeting will be a presentation by SIG member Jim
Nuytens of PM123 native OS/2 multimedia program designed to play the increasingly
popular MP3 audio files found around the web and various newsgroups. PM123 was also
awarded "Runner-up" in the 1998 OS/2 E-Zine! Reader's Choice awards for
multimedia programs.
Jim will demonstrate some neat PM123 features, including WinAmp "skins"
support, the built-in graphic equalizer/pre-amp, and how to create play lists in
PM123 so that you can more easily setup an entire evening's worth of listening pleasure.
He also plans to show some of the more than 60 WinAmp "skins" that
he has converted using PM123's built-in skin converter and report on some of the
pitfalls he found while doing so.
Other agenda items include SIG business matters, OS/2 news, new product announcements,
a brief "How-To" or "Neat Feature" member presentation, Q&A
session, software raffle, etc. An OS/2 system will be on hand for demos of OS/2,
Java, Internet, etc., as time may permit. Free light refreshments will also be available.
Mark the date and time: Wednesday, June 23, at 7:00pm, to hear about all the
new and exciting developments, or if you have questions about OS/2 Warp and Java.
