Lotus Notes and Odin 20020526

Anyone running Lotus Notes for windoze under Odin might be interested in the following.

I have been running Lotus Notes v5.0.3 for a while under older versions of Odin. The Lotus directory structure was copied from a windoze NT machine, and the notes.ini was trimmed right down so that when I started Lotus Notes it treated me as a new user, asked for my user.ID file, and setup my local environment based on my existing setup on the notes server.

Replication never worked properly, so I had to open my mail database on the server (slow) and use archive to move mail down to my local PC. Also, the database icons were always black squares.

After initial startup and login there was a hang of about 30 seconds and then an error message. Replying to this message would cause a crash, so I just left it there, changed focus back to Lotus Notes, and after that most functions worked ok.

I tried upgrading to newer builds of Odin, but the 30 second hang at startup became a permanent lockup and crash of Lotus Notes. I finally discovered that there is a setting in the user mail profile for "Check Subscriptions" and it appears that this check is done after initial login. Unchecking this option box removed the 30 second hang and crash at startup. This enabled me to upgrade to newer builds of Odin which fixed up some functions of Lotus Notes with database buttons, etc.

I recently upgraded to Odin build 20020627 and was surprised to see that finally the database icons were correct, instead of just black boxes. I was encouraged to attempt replication of my server mailbox down to my local PC. The "New Replication" commenced and showed me the replicator page and a progress report, which was further than previous attempts would get. The replication proceeded and appeared to complete, but then there appeared an Odin error message and Lotus Notes crashed.

Restarting Notes showed the new local replica and it appeared usable. Opening the replicator page and pressing "start" kicked off a replication process and it completed ok, with no crash. I have fiddled with the replicator settings and it now seems pretty stable! I am still manually pressing the "start" button to kick off replication, but will soon try out the automated feature to schedule replications during the day. Currently pressing the other button for just "send/receive mail" (I think thats the button title) causes a crash so I haven't pressed that since... I just use the "start" button.

I changed the replication settings from medium priority to 'Low Priority'. Replication appears to be more stable now, but I haven't done enough testing to prove this change made the difference.

Most of the replication settings I did not change. They were things like:

Do send deletions out.
Don't send changes out for the title & catalog information.
Don't send changes out for the local security properties.

Allow incoming changes to Forms & Views.
Allow incoming changes to Agents.
Allow incoming changes to Access Control Lists.
Allow incoming changes for Deletions.

Changing these things may work fine. I just haven't messed with them.

Thanks to Netlabs and the Odin team for allowing me to keep running OS/2 in a windoze Lotus Notes v5 server environment, and thanks for the ongoing improvements to Odin to now allow me to use replication, because going to the server mailbox is SLOW!!

Using the latest Odin weekly build ftp://ftp.os2.org/odin/Weekly/odin32bin-20020627-release.wpi

Hopefully this is useful to other OS/2 users who have been abandoned by Lotus.

eComStation installation

Maybe not the way to spread this message but hopefully it will reach a bigger group this way. If you are installing eComstation from CD 1 and are not having success, here are some tips.

*Frequent beeps from the PC speaker and a hard disk LED keeps burning. eCS uses the Daniela IDE driver by default. These beeps indicate the driver detected data errors (read manual of Daniela driver). You can add in the config.sys behind basedev =danis506.add line the option /forcegbm. Be aware however that these beeps are a clear signal. Check your computer is properly grounded! If you are booting from CD 1 and are having trouble, see next suggestion.

*If booting from CD 1 and it fails or install, before booting to hard disk OR the system does not boot up from hard disk AFTER the first phase of the installation (that it has copied files). Boot from CD 1 and press option 2 for the advanced boot menu. Deselect the option Desktop, select Legacy VGA and select under the menu ATAP(PI)/(E)IDE the option Standard. When booted from CD the desktop will not look nice (its only running now at 16 colours). During the installation you come to the screen where you can choose between the Scitech Display Doctor, GenGradd and VGA driver, choose for Scitech display doctor.

*If you are having trouble booting from CD 1 get the new diskette 1 one from http://www.ecomstation.com and the read the instructions there.

Look when logged in, under the option Fixes/Features and search for

"Boot Diskettes (CD1) update may 2002". If you do not have and userid password click on the register button on the main page. In many cases you can register by entering your First name, last name and zipcode information. But your reseller can supply you with this information.

*Get the eCS manual from

http://www.ecomstation.com/docs/release1.0/ecs-ga-pdf-a5.pdf

(Has more documentation on the preboot menu).

Warpstock Austin volunteers needed

Are you coming to Warpstock 2002 in Austin Texas, October 5-6?

Warpstock 2002 is less then 3 months away now. The presentation schedule is filling up nicely and the excitement is building. If you are planning on coming , would you like to help out at the event? Volunteers who contribute at least two hours of their time during the weekend receive a free Warpstock shirt and the eternal gratitude of those who attend the event. Without the volunteers, the show would not be a success.

We need volunteers to help man the registration table, the Warpstock booth, act as room monitors, help with the network setup, help with the exhibition hall setup and breakdown. You don't have to be local to the Austin area to help in these areas. One thing we could use help with this year from those familiar with Austin, are suggestions for the Social event. Do you know of a facility near the Arboretum area, that can provide an interesting evening for about 100 people? If so please let us know at warpstock-team@yahoogroups.com. Make sure you let us know if you are interested in volunteering and what position you may be interested in helping with. (When you notify us in advance of your plan to help we can make sure we order the correct size and number of shirts, and we can better coordinate the event.)

For more on Warpstock 2002 please see our web page at http://www.warpstock.org where you can find more information about hotel reservations and a preliminary list of scheduled sessions.

Warpstock, Inc., is a North Carolina corporation. The Warpstock annual conference is a gathering of OS/2 users, developers, and vendors from around the world for the purpose of education and advocacy. More information is available at the Warpstock web site: http://www.warpstock.org

XMouse 0.7 correction

Unfortunately I announced in my previous posting Xmouse 0.7 in way that everybody must believe if is a GA release. This is not the case (even the documentation is missing).

Martin Lafaix has the following correction:

If you have a notebook, would you please try this test release of xmouse and mail me lafaix@online.fr back the result of running "mouseset /query" (using something like "mouseset /query >report"), using the included mouseset.exe.

Please also gives your notebook brand/model/description.

The purpose of this experiment is to find how widely (or tinly) available is the support of PS/2 multiplexed ports. If this support is indeed widely available, a future release of xmouse may recognize it.

If you don't have a notebook, you don't need to participate in the test. Thanks for the attention, though :)

"REXX Tips & Tricks v3.30" is an OS/2 INF file containing useful hints and information about OS/2 REXX.

Included are information about literature for REXX, further Software for REXX, hints & tips for OS/2 commands, hints & tips for REXX commands & functions, some hints for optimizations, a lot of REXX source code (functions & complete programs) and much more.

If you have any comments, suggestions or corrections for REXX Tips & Tricks please contact me via email (I don't read this newsgroup very often).

Caution:

To read this file you need either OS/2 or an INF Viewer for your operating system!

A possible view program for Windows 3.1 and newer versions is oview.exe

You can find it here: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/windows/win_inf.zip

You only need the files

ipf.dll
libipfx.dll
oview.exe

from the file ov_demo.zip inside of win_inf.zip. It should be possible to decompress them without installing the demo - but I don't know how (I'm not so familar with Windows).

Official Announcement Warpstock Europe 2002

When and where.

The annual OS/2 (eCS) event in Europe will be held this time in the historical city of Arnhem in the Netherlands from November

8th - 10th, 2002 at the Youth Hostel "Alteveer". Members of Dutch, German and Belgian OS/2 usergroups are working together in organizing this event, giving the European thought an extra impulse that way.

The location.

Alteveer Hostel is a modern accomodation situated in the on the woody northern site of Arnhem, which is located at the banks of the river Rhine. It's close to the bustling city centre and with lots of recreational facilities in the area. The famous Open Air Museum and Burgers Zoo are within walking distance. A bit further you will find the Hoge Veluwe National Park with the Kroeller Mueller Museum and its outstanding collection of art and paintings.

Accessibility.

Inspecting a globe you will find Arnhem about a 100 km east of Amsterdam, some 10 km away from the border with Germany. It's about one hour from Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) either by car or train. Arnhem is as far as 400km from Hamburg, 165 km from Koeln, 640 km from Basel, 215 km from Bruxelles and 510 km from Paris.

The Hostel Alteveer is easily reachable from the A12 highway at exit 26 toward Arnhem-North, no matter if you are coming from Amsterdam or Germany.More information you will find on the website.

The accomodation.

The hostel itself http://www.njhc.nl/english/hb_entree.cfm?id=6 has a very domesticated atmosphere, modern meeting rooms, a cheerful English pub, snooker billiard and a nice main lobby with a variety of chairs. There is already a bed and breakfast for the rate of about $20 per night for a quadruple room. So the hostel has the ultimate ingredients to exchange knowledge among OS/2 enthousiasts, even during the night! If you are curious about pictures of the hostel take a look at http://warpstock.os2.org.

If you prefer a real hotel over a youth hostel, of course there is the possibility to make a choice from a wide range of all kind of Hotels in the city of Arnhem. There is a very nice website to choose hotels from http://www.bookings.nl/cgi-bin/searchpage.pl?lang=uk&id=100001&style=B. More information about registration and all the things you need to enjoy Warpstock Europe 2002 are published very soon on the Warpstock website.

What could one expect?

If you are dealing with OS/2 or eCS, no matter in what way, one of the most frequently asked questions is: How to get things working on OS/2............!

So much attention on this Warpstock Europe will be paid to that, e.g. USB devices, digital camera's, etc.

Dutch, German and Belgian OS/2 usergroups are presenting themselves, showing you all the practical things you allways wanted to know.

Furthermore vendors will be present with special offers of OS/2 software (Mensys BV: http://www.mensys.nl/) and full OS/2 supported IBM hardware (Bluelink BV: http://www.bluelink.nl/). The offers you will discover there are really irresistable!

Some presentation sessions by well known people inside the OS/2 world are already confirmed.

We mention here:
* Mensys people : A look at the complete rewritten installation procedure of eCS * Alain Reykaert: CID install * Marcus de Geus: REXX-mail * Bart van Leeuwen: The brand new email client "Lookout/2 " * Peter Kolle: All about the excellent DTP program Maul * Achim Hasenmueller: Innotek software * Marcus Montkovski: USB support OS/2 * Zsolt Kadar: That amazing UpdateCD * Oliver Stein: Get connected by IR

This is only the beginning and there are much more presentations to come.

If you are interested in giving a presentation feel free to contact Christian Langanke C.Langanke@TeamOS2.de

Gerrit Schoenmaker g.s.schoenmaker@kader.hobby.nl or John Bijnens john.bijnens@planetinternet.be.

All speakers at Warpstock get a free bed & breakfast in Alteveer Hostel for one night! So go ahead and get in touch.

More information will be available very soon at the Warpstock Europe website warpstock.os2.org.

CW-MM Classes 0.23 a complete MMOS/2 Classes Replacement

Chris Wohlgemuth has released the CW-MM Classes 0.23

The package is now (as of V0.2.3) a complete replacement for the multimedia classes coming with MMOS2. The included classes are more robust and have an extended feature set like displaying image information in the settings notebook and the details view. A new JPEG IO-procedure overcomes limitations of the default JPEG procedure coming with the multimedia subsystem. For more information about it go here.

Features

* Integrates MP3- and OGG-Files into the WPS
* Audio details of any audio class in folder details view
* Audio details of any audio class in the settings notebook
* ID3 tags in the details view of folders
* ID3 tag editing in the settings notebook
* Caching of information to speed up folder opening
* Image file information in the settings and the details view
* New JPEG IO-procedure included which may read progressive JPEG files
* Media folder plays any audio file class
* New shadow class showing audio details in folder details view.
* Playlists (the folder contents is the playlist)
* CD player with FreeDB support
* Control playing using setup strings
* Audio device sharing
* ID3 tag display in player
* CD player with FreeDB support.
* REXX interface if WPS-Wizard V0.2.0 is installed

The additional audio classes integrate the MMIO procedures for MP3 and OGG files written by Russel O'Connor http://www.math.berkeley.edu/~roconnor/ seamlessly into the WPS. After installation Ogg- and MP3 files are treated the same way by the WPS as the other audio files. They have their own Icons and the same menus as for example wave files. A doubleclick starts playback another one stops it. The convert menu item helps you decoding the file to wave without any other program. There's also a new open-item for volume.
