DualMode full screen/windowed graphics library release 6 is available
The DualMode Library and MGLServer are tools to allow a developer to
develop graphics applications that can seamlessly switch video resolutions
and operate in a resizable DIVE window. It handles all video, keyboard,
mouse, and joystick operations making the state of the video (full screen
or windowed) completely transparent to the developer.
The current release has the following enhancements and updates:
* Mouse absolute positioning in PM mode changed
While in PM mode when the mouse is grabbed, mouse movement is restricted
to the size of the playfield without polling and recentering the mouse.
This should make for less processor "noise" and smoother operation and
mouse readings.
* Completely customizable and programmable keyboard interface
Keys on the keyboard can now be programmed to perform a time-dependent
sequence of events, like rapid fire or those tricky little "dragon punch"
Street Fighter moves. ;-)
* Standard GUI interface for keyboard settings
Your application can call a function to pop up a dialog window which can
maintain your programmable keyboard settings and these settings can be
saved in your application's INI file.
* Direct framebuffer blitters cleaned up a bit
The direct framebuffer blitters will now clip properly to the size of the
window and will clip around windows that are placed on top of your
window. They're still a bit sloppy, but generally seem to get the job
done.
* Blitter support for complex shapes
Support was added for placing a complex shaped window on top of your
DualMode application. So anyone with Sit-O-CHIRARI or similar enhancer
running won't have to worry about it interfering anymore.
* Bug fixed on potentially improper full screen shutdown procedures
* Added preliminary support for BGR3/4 source format images
This has not been implemented for full screen sessions yet.
* Example application updated
DMLibTest now will accept keyboard and mouse input to demonstrate how to
use more of the features of the DualMode library. It will draw a colorful
bitmap and allow you to switch full screen by pressing any key other than
ESC (which will exit) or 1 (which will bring up the keyboard settings).
While the app is running, you will be able to draw in white on the bitmap
using the mouse.

FtpServer 1.05
A socket leak has been discovered in FtpServer. (Actually, it was
reported some time ago, but until recently I was never able to
reproduce it.) It happens when a client uses passive ftp and then
attempts to do an illegal operation. This is probably not a problem on
small-traffic sites, but could cause serious problems if you have a
heavily-used server, and most particularly if you are being attacked by
hackers trying to find ways to break into your site. In such cases your
system will eventually run out of available sockets, effectively
blocking all network operations.
Accordingly, users of FtpServer are strongly advised to upgrade to
version 1.05, which can be found at
http://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/os2/ftpserver.html
or at
ftp://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/software/ftpser105.zip
LIST OF CHANGES (since version 1.00)
Version 1.05
Fixed a crash on hacker attempt to create impossible directory.
Fixed a socket leak in passive mode.
Change to way nameserver lookup is done, for better
performance in the case of a denial-of-service attack.
Added logging of soclose() failures.

OS/2 Netlabs Relaunch, some updates
Hi OS/2 and eCS Community,
It's quite a long time ago that I promised a complete relaunch of OS/2
Netlabs. The past months a lot of people asked me about the outdated
webpages and about serveral projects, let me explain why it takes that
long and what you can expect soon.
End of July 2002 I finished classes at the Computer Science Departement at
Biel School of Engineering in Switzerland. As you can imagine it's quite a
lot of work to finish the studies so I couldn't invest as much time into
OS/2 Netlabs as I expected. I also had to earn some money in my spare
time...
However, at my current job I wrote a new content management system (CMS) I
will use as well for the new webpages at netlabs.org. This CMS is working
on my local testwebserver and will be enhanced in the future.
I will have my diploma exams in early September and November/December I
will write my diploma work. That means after my exams I will go to Hamburg
(Germany) to meet Arne Blankerts which hosts the netlabs.org webserver.
In Hamburg I will completely update the current webserver and enable the
new face of the webpages. After the relaunch we will have some exciting
new projects at OS/2 Netlabs, I'm quite sure you will like it!
The update will be ready for Warpstock USA, Arne Blankerts will introduce
it live at our OS/2 Netlabs booth and answer your questions. Because of
the new CMS everyone can be an active contributor to OS/2 Netlabs, even as
a normal user. We will provide a short introduction to our CMS at
Warpstock (USA and Europe) and we hope that several users will get so
called Project Administrators. This will help us to keep OS/2 Netlabs up
to date in the Internet.
There will also be a lot of news for developers out there, we have plenty
of ideas which will be discussed as soon as possible. Also we plan to
relaunch edm2.com, the domain is now hosted at netlabs.org (and belongs to
us as well, thanks a lot to the previous EDM/2 crew!).
If you want to meet us you should definitely visit Warpstock USA and/or
Europe. A lot of our developers will be there and we also have several
presentations about OS/2 Netlabs related projects. It's always a great
plesure to meet the people out there in real live! I can't make it to
Warpstock USA unfortunately but I will be at Warpstock Europe.
That's it so far, expect some news soon!
Enjoy the summer!

Postgres SQL server V7.2.1 is available
The last version of the Postgres is available. In this release I have included a new
PostGis module.
In effect, PostGIS "spatially enables" the PostgreSQL server, allowing it to be used as
a backend spatial database for geographic information systems (GIS), much like
ESRI's SDE or Oracle's Spatial extension
In the download section is possible download a University of Minnesota Mapserver for
OS/2. This server work with Postgres via PostGis module.
Tell me your comments or questions.

IBM OS/2 4.52 is Out
OSNews reader Prognathous writes: "Well, actually it was released earlier this year,
but I couldn't find any references in your news section, so it's about time. The only
problem is that other than in usenet, details are scant and the official release was very
subdued (search the page for "4.52")." This release is only available to IBM's active
software subscription customers of OS/2 Warp 4 and it does seem to be a service
pack.

Album Grabber 0.75
Album Grabber is basically a bot that grabs album covers off of www.allmusic.com. In
order for it to work, it expects your music collection to be in a certain format. Your root
music directory should contain artist directories, and underneath each artist dir should
be album directories. Album Grabber will attempt to locate the correct album cover and
present it to you in a window along with 'yes' and 'no' options. 'yes' means to save the
album jpg inside the album directory, 'no' means do nothing and proceed. The
program is multi threaded, so you can let it run for awhile and then come back and
make your decisions. It was compiled using Sun's 1.3 JVM. The source and JBuilder
project files are all included so its easy to recompile it yourself.
License: Album Grabber is release under the GNU GPL freeware license.
http://bluedragontavern.dyndns.org/albumgrabber/index.html
BTW: on my system (Java 1.3.1) the Album Grabber crashes when starting it on a
second attempt. Deleting the settings.ini helps as workaround, but if some more OS/2
users send feedback to the developer this will be hopefully solved in future releases.
