SciTech Software Inc. to Open Source Its Proprietary Device Driver Architecture

* SciTech Software Inc confirms Open Source plans, and offers two licenses to accommodate the needs of developers and vendors.

Chico, Calif., August 27, 2002 -- SciTech Software, Inc. today announced the intention to release the bulk of its proprietary device driver development tools under a new dual license structure. SciTech has selected the GNU General Public License (GPL) license to handle the needs of Open Source developers along with a commercial software license for those seeking to offer non-GPL solutions. By providing an Open Source license to its powerful development tools SciTech is seeking to gain wider acceptance of its unique SciTech SNAP device driver architecture. To date companies such as IBM, and ATI have benefited from the binary compatibility that the SciTech SNAP architecture provides. With this latest announcement embedded and industrial developers will have the ability to utilize the same architecture to further their own efforts.

Over the years Ive been asked to put up or shut up by some powerful players in the Open Source community regarding this architecture; well I guess the time has come to put up, said Kendall Bennett, founder/CEO of SciTech Software Inc., adding the alternate OS community has suffered long enough through the lack of a solid binary compatible device driver architecture

SciTechs commercially available graphics driver pack, SciTech SNAP Graphics, currently supports nearly 180 graphics chip sets on multiple OSes with full 2D acceleration. Access to all existing SciTech SNAP drivers will remain available under SciTechs commercial license and will not be Open Sourced due to existing NDAs with chip vendors. However, anyone choosing to utilize the SciTech SNAP development tools will have the ability to study GPL samples of SciTech SNAP drivers in the DDK. The dual license will allow developers the ability to quickly tap into this fully plug-and-play support base with little effort.

We see this as an important step for the alternate OS space, said Andrew Bloo, Director of Sales and Marketing for SciTech Software Inc. for the first time OS vendors that service emerging markets get a true alternative to the aging X11 driver model. SciTech SNAP provides complete 2D acceleration, plug-and-play and a support base equal to anything available regardless of OS including Windows.

By providing application developers, hardware and OS vendors the ability to fully develop solutions free of charge, SciTech is providing real value to emerging markets. Should developers decide to ship drivers and or applications developed with SciTechs tools they can then decide to release their source code under the terms of the GPL or easily change their license to the commercial version and protect their proprietary code.

About SciTech SciTech Software, Inc. is a leading supplier of PC graphics utilities, drivers, and tools for the embedded, industrial and enterprise markets. SciTechs products allow software developers to achieve maximum performance from their systems graphics hardware. SciTechs products include, SciTech SNAP Graphics, a fully accelerated binary compatible graphic device driver solution, SciTech GLDirect, an OpenGL to Direct3D driver and SciTech MGL, an Open Source, professional graphics library used to develop some of todays most popular software programs. SciTech products support the Windows, Linux, OS/2, DOS, QNX, and SMX operating systems. Many major software companies and hardware companies license portions of SciTechs technology for incorporation in their products. SciTech is privately held and the company's web address is http://www.scitechsoft.com

VDMA v0.9b *BETA* RELEASEd

Hi everyone!

The original VDMA driver done by I.B.M. was fixed, patched and extended for about 10 years. Still the DMA port emulation is not quite complete or accurate and some things weren't done in a really efficient manner. DMA in VDMs is mostly used for sound output of games and due to limits of the original driver, games like Prince of Persia 2, Goblins 3 and Sam'n Max didn't work at all or not right.

My replacement driver is 100% new. It contains a completely new logic for emulating DMA transfers. It's half the size of the original driver, definitely more accurate and is coded using about 80% assembly and 20% Watcom C code.

Download from: http://ecomstation.ru/kiewitzsoft/vdd-vdma.php

Like always:
- This is a BETA version, do NOT use in productive environments - DO NOT UPLOAD TO PUBLIC SERVERS (this means e.g. hobbes), Thank you.

cu, Kiewitz

ImageJ 1.28

ImageJ is a public domain Java image processing program inspired by NIH Image for the Macintosh. It runs, either as an online applet or as a downloadable application, on any computer with a Java 1.1 or later virtual machine.

It can display, edit, analyze, process, save and print 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit images. It can read many image formats including TIFF, GIF, JPEG, BMP, DICOM, FITS and "raw". It supports "stacks", a series of images that share a single window. It is multithreaded, so time-consuming operations such as image file reading can be performed in parallel with other operations.

It can calculate area and pixel value statistics of user-defined selections. It can measure distances and angles. It can create density histograms and line profile plots. It supports standard image processing functions such as contrast manipulation, sharpening, smoothing, edge detection and median filtering.

It does geometric transformations such as scaling, rotation and flips. Image can be zoomed up to 32:1 and down to 1:32. All analysis and processing functions are available at any magnification factor. The program supports any number of windows (images) simultaneously, limited only by available memory.

Spatial calibration is available to provide real world dimensional measurements in units such as millimeters. Density or gray scale calibration is also available.

ImageJ was designed with an open architecture that provides extensibility via Java plugins. Custom acquisition, analysis and processing plugins can be developed using ImageJ's built in editor and Java compiler. User-written plugins make it possible to solve almost any image processing or analysis problem.

ImageJ is being developed on Mac OS X using its built in editor and Java compiler, plus the BBEdit editor and the Ant build tool. The source code is freely available. The author, Wayne Rasband (wayne@codon.nih.gov), is at the Research Services Branch, National Institute of Mental Health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA.

Privoxy (originally Junkbuster) 3.0.0 for OS/2 released

This is the first stable (non-beta) release of Privoxy.

Privoxy is a web proxy with advanced filtering capabilities for protecting privacy, filtering web page content, managing cookies, controlling access, and removing ads, banners, pop-ups and other obnoxious Internet junk. Privoxy has a very flexible configuration and can be customized to suit individual needs and tastes. Privoxy has application for both stand-alone systems and multi-user networks.

Privoxy is based on Internet Junkbuster (tm).

At present, Privoxy is known to run on Windows(95, 98, ME, 2000, XP), Linux (RedHat, SuSE, Debian, Conectiva, Gentoo), Mac OSX, OS/2, AmigaOS, BeOS, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, and many more flavors of Unix.

In addition to the traditional features of Internet Junkbuster, such as ad and banner blocking, cookie management/protection, and HTTP header manipulation, Privoxy adds many enhancements and new features in the same vein.

* Integrated browser based configuration and control utility at http:// config.privoxy.org/ (shortcut: http://p.p/). Browser-based tracing of rule and filter effects. Remote toggling.

* Web page content filtering (removes banners based on size, invisible "web-bugs", JavaScript and HTML annoyances, pop-up windows, etc.)

* Modularized configuration that allows for standard settings and user settings to reside in separate files, so that installing updated actions files won't overwrite individual user settings.

* HTTP/1.1 compliant (but not all optional 1.1 features are supported).

* Support for Perl Compatible Regular Expressions in the configuration files, and generally a more sophisticated and flexible configuration syntax over previous versions.

* Improved cookie management features (e.g. session based cookies).

* GIF de-animation.

* Bypass many click-tracking scripts (avoids script redirection).

* Multi-threaded (POSIX and native threads).

* User-customizable HTML templates for all proxy-generated pages (e.g. "blocked" page).

* Auto-detection and re-reading of config file changes.

* Improved signal handling, and a true daemon mode (Unix).

* Every feature now controllable on a per-site or per-location basis, configuration more powerful and versatile over-all.

* Many smaller new features added, limitations and bugs removed, and security holes fixed.

Pronews/2 v1,52 build cp012 now available

Pronews/2 v1.52 build cp012 is now available for download from ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/pn2152cp012.zip and its mirrors. It's destination is ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/internet/news/reader/pn2152cp012.zip

Pronews/2 is an internet news reader for OS/2!

1) Attempt to load a URL that spanned multiple lines would fail due to only partial URL being passed to Netscape. Also change max URL length to 512.

2) We'd attempt to retrieve "autolimit" headers rather than the number of messages in the group when "prompt over" was set.

3) CR not added to lines ending in LF when autowrap is OFF !!!

4) "Use Group Defaults" ignored on Posting page of settings note book for each group.

5) Add groupname to a couple of messages in the log

6) Add Cancel and Catchup to commands saved at shutdown

7) Modify check for "group rebuilt on server" to only spring into action if new "highnum" is less than old "lownum" to stop false detection and retrieval of all articles.

8) Handle headers containing only tab characters correctly when emls formatting is requested. Stops following header lines from appearing as part of the body of the article.

9) Amend Save Queue to save only specific commands not everything except posts.

10) Fix crash when attempting to spellcheck a message

11) Handle "Prompt if over" and "Automatically limit to" and upper limit of maxheaders in prompt dialogs

12) Append to file dialog box was incorrectly titled Save as...

13) Fixed bug that stopped cancel posts being issued from any group other than "Sent Messages".

14) Added PNMAXHEADERS support to 'Retrieve all headers' code section. Previously only worked for 'get new headers'.

15) Fixed erroneous popup about number of messages in group exceeding threshold when there are 0 articles.

16) Semicolon added to list of allowable characters in http[s] URLs.

17) QP encoded articles received from connection now correctly have trailing = signs on lines removed before article is written to disk.

18) Translated all C source files to CPP for better typing and casting support.

19) Subject field is now always QP encoded if it contains 8BIT characters. Ignores the newsgroup posting settings.

20) Sender email address was in MIME when quoted in the "On such and such, so and so wrote:" line in replies.

21) Corrected "Not enough space" popup error message to include amount of space required correctly (not 0 any more!)

22) Allowed posting and decoding of multipart articles in up to 2048 parts now.

23) Added debug code to let me trace what gets called most often and then tuned the top 10 or so callees. I feel the need for speed :-)

24) Fixed an error that occurred when the server high message number was lower than the local high message number for a group. Ths happens when a newsgroup is rebuilt on the server and before, it would not be noticeable, just no new messages would show up. Now Pronews will automatically adjust the local high message number to the server hmn and subsequent fetches will pick up new articles.

25) Added % character as a valid URL character

26) Added support for https:// links

27) Email address local parts containing the / and + character incorrectly mangled even though it's a valid RFC822 char.

28) Servers incorrectly go offline even with tasks still queued when "Go offline when queue is empty" is set on.

29) Correct incomplete data displayed when editing an article in the post queue. Data after the first blank line was omitted from the editor window previously.

30) Correct double-decode of quoted printable articles that lost characters from them. Decode only once on receipt of article from server, not again when displaying it locally.

31) Correct crash when retrieving headers that contain a malformed date.

32) Two too many articles being retrieved when max headers was being reached.

33) Speeded up various functions by eliminating a call to put offline servers that were already offline!

34) Changed log functions to add fractions of a second to log output to aid in performance debugging

35) Correct a problem with groups containing over 32767 headers where the scrollbar behaved weirdly. Scrolling was erratic to say the least! Aha! This will be the "Scrolling bug when more than 32k articles in a group" listed as fixed in ia119 by Panacea.

36) Add log debug message when maximum headers dialog window is issued. Groupname can be too long to be seen so this at least lets you find out what group it is.

37) Enhancement: if an environment variable PNMAXHEADERS is set set to a number then that will become the largest number of headers allowed in a newsgroup. Default: 100000.

38) Enhancement: if an environment variable PNNOOFASFILEPART is set to any value then PN2 will not treat "x of y" as file part numbers in multipart decodes, only (x/y) will work.

39) Enhancement to display missing article part numbers when a multipart decode is requested. Makes requesting reposts easier.

40) Check for dates with year > 2037 and set to 2001 to stop crash in strftime(). Validity check all date fields!
