Net: 3rd RFD: comp.os.os2.ecomstation

14 Aug 2004 21:24:51

Forwarded message from stefanj@gte.net (Jason Stefanovich) on Tue, 10 Aug
2004 17:33:41 UTC Posted on: comp.os.os2.announce

REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group comp.os.os2.ecomstation

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a
world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup comp.os.os2.ecomstation. This is
not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time. Procedural
details are below.

Newsgroup line:
comp.os.os2.ecomstation Serenity Systems operating system eComStation.

CHANGES from previous RFD:

Typographical fixes.

RATIONALE: comp.os.os2.ecomstation

The newsgroup 'comp.os.os2.ecomstation' would be a forum for
discussing issues related to the use of the eComStation operating system,
a licensed version of IBM's OS/2 from Serenity Systems Intl.

Currently, the comp.os.os2.* newsgroups are used as a resource for asking
and answering questions regarding all OS/2 versions, including
eComStation. OS/2 is the major operating system upon which eComStation is
based, however eComStation has gained sufficient interest to support its
own newsgroup.

In addition, the general audience for questions regarding eComStation and
Serenity Systems differ from the audience interested in general IBM OS/2
questions. Therefore, it seems appropriate for eComStation to gain its
own newsgroup for eComStation-specific questions.

Appropriate discussion in the group will involve eComStation and other
eComStation-related products (including Serenity Virtual Station.) Some
examples of topics that should be posted to
comp.os.os2.ecomstation:

- General questions regarding the installation and operation of
eComStation
- Questions regarding eComStation specific programming
- Discussion of eComStation related technologies
- Questions regarding application software and hardware support -
eComStation user advocacy and debate

While several unmoderated online fora dedicated to eComStation do exist
and have a large amount of traffic, experience shows that the lack of a
unified forum hampers the development of a decent discussion.

The only other unmoderated newsgroups that offers some room for such
discussions today are in comp.os.os2.*. However, eComStation differs
significantly enough from the base OS/2 that discussions regarding it may
not be relevant at all to the general OS/2 user. Discussions involving
eComStation have comprised a significant portion of the traffic in the
comp.os.os2 hierarchy to the point where it may be distracting for the
eComStation user and general OS/2 user alike.

The separation of eComStation issues from general comp.os.os2.* topics
will hence avoid user confusion and avoid disagreement on the general
relevance of eComStation in relation to OS/2 which was felt to be
unsatisfactory by all parties.

CHARTER: comp.os.os2.ecomstation

comp.os.os2.ecomstation is an unmoderated newsgroup for discussion of the
eComStation operating system and related technologies.

Posting guidelines:

1) Posts must be related to the discussion of eComStation, which includes
all the modern aspects of operating eComStation as well as related topics,
but excludes general OS/2 topics, unless a direct relevance to eComStation
can be made explicit. Topics which are relevant to
the broader audience of OS/2 users may be better received in the
appropriate
general category OS/2 group. Original and interesting criticism of
eComStation is welcome.

2) Posts should not be made if they contain personal attacks, incitement
to retribution (i.e. flames and obvious trolling), or general hostility.

Clearly inappropriate postings include:
(1) Personal attacks;
(2) Discussion that isn't about or related to eComStation
(3) Multiple messages that all say the same or very similar things;
and
(4) Overly speculative postings and postings that are "not even
wrong."

3) Posts may include links to websites or personal pages that contain
relevant and on-topic information about eComStation.

4) Posting of binary files is prohibited. Short segments of source code or
quotes from papers may be posted; however, large projects and complete
papers should be archived elsewhere, and a link to the download site
included in the post.

END CHARTER.

PROCEDURE:

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase of
the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroups should be
raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue for a minimum of
21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this proposal is posted to
news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For Votes (CFV) may be posted
by a neutral vote taker if the discussion warrants it. Please do not
attempt to vote until this happens.

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.

This RFD attempts to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation
guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "How to
Format and Submit a New Group Proposal". Please refer to these documents
(available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have any questions about the
process.

SW: Mr. Message (AIM client) 8/8/2004 update

14 Aug 2004 21:00:26

Forwarded message from Marty on Sun, 8 Aug 2004
22:07:07 UTC Posted on: comp.os.os2.apps

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR
protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and
a variety of other clients).

It has been updated with the following changes:
* Changed login sequence to use the secure MD5 login, where only an MD5
hashed version of your password is sent after the server sends a public
key. This will make it very difficult for someone spying on your
connection to get your password.
* Changed to move the popup bubble window to the left side if you're on
the right side of the screen. This should also be multi-monitor aware.
* Session manager can now be minimized without taking your buddy list
window(s) with it.
* Instant message window pops up with the focus on the window where you
can begin typing immediately.
* Fixed a faulty memory deallocation causing a possible crash on startup
when you've added a buddy to the local buddy list.
* Fixed the window position information getting destroyed (made into
size 0 x 0) when AOL boots us.

You can download it here:
http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage_bin_08082004.zip
or with the full source code here:
http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage_srcbin_08082004.zip

Please read the README file before running or asking for support. As
always, feedback is appreciated.

EVENT: Warpstock Europe 2004 progress

10 Aug 2004 17:43:43 -0500

From: Gerrit Schoenmaker (gerrit@mensys.nl)

Warpstock Europe 2004 is going strong!
Take a look at www.warpstock.net

SESSIONS
Although it still takes quite a while before November 26th is finally
there, the speaker sessions at WarpStock Europe 2004 are filling up
rapidly.
There is already a lot of information about the program available on the
Warpstock Europe website (www.warpstock.net/index2.html).
Please take into account the session list is changing regular. The
availability of the final schedule depends on how fast the few empty
places will be filled up.
Some sessions expecting to be added:
1. Automation of model trains by OS/2
2. Communication of eCS and OS/2 in a heterogeneous network (e.g. MacOS,
Novell, Linux etc.)
3. VPN connections, OS/2 and Injoy Firewall

There is some room left for a few sessions, so feel free and contact our
speaker coordinator Christian Langanke (cla@clanganke.de).

USERGROUPS
The presence of several European OS/2 user groups (Dutch, German and
Belgium) guarantees that every Warpstock attendee can see how things are
working in real. Just a random pick from what will be shown:
1. The world of USB e.g. memory sticks, scanning, colorprinting and
external harddisks.
2. Watching TV and recording movies using TV Emperoar
3. Create your own movie DVD in OS/2
4. Configuration of laptops using different network interfaces (cable
and WIFI)
5. Multihead monitor use
and much, much more .......!

Besides the sessions some workshops will be given at Warpstock Europe,
including the traditional MAUL workshop from Peter Koller and probably a
XFree86/2 how to install.

LOCATION

This year's European Warpstock will be held at the StayOkay Hostel at
Arnhem in The Netherlands, which is the same location as it was in 2002.
The hostel's interior has been renewed and has everything you need. It
offers her customers good food for a reasonable price, a pub in English
style, nice conference rooms, great hospitality and the lovely
historical city of Arnhem.
And last but not least it has sleeping accomodation for groups. That's
the way to get the real taste of what Warpstock is all about.
You may find hotel and hostel booking information on the Warpstock
Europe website.

REGISTRATION

Online registration in advance is the best and cheapest way to become a
Warpstock Europe attendee!
