SW: DFSee 6.13 released, includes LINUX now

10 Sep 2004 18:02:33

From: "Jan van Wijk"

DFSee version 6.13 has been released today, a few fixes and quite a few
cosmetic enhancements in the Linux version.

DFSee is the SWISS-ARMY-KNIFE for disk and filesystem problems. With
FDISK-like displays, analysis and recovery, FIX commands, UNDELETE for
HPFS/NTFS, imaging and cloning. More details at:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee.htm

Direct download links:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfsee6xx.zip
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/dfsee613.zip
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=dfsee

Just the 'dfsee' Linux executable and the 'dfstest.dfs' script:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfslinux.zip

Most important functional changes since 6.11/6.12:

- DFSTEST Script enhanced with a few Linux specific commands
- DEV Alias for "vol" cmd, show device mount info on Linux
- HELP Changed footer-colors in 3D-cmdr scheme to magenta
- Key Fixed finding 'dfsee.key' in the Linux PATH correctly
- MENU Fixed Exit/Speed-w entries missing in Linux version
- MENU Linux-device description added to Part/disk lists
- MENU "Open device to work with" for Linux (not "volume")
- MAP Removed extra '/dev/' from top line of MAP display
- PTE/LVM Fixed inconsistent Mode=xxx after executing command
- QUERY Fixed traps on several values when 0 disks accessible
- Screen Fixed garbage windows borders in Linux version (xterm)
- Screen Fixed garbage line-drawings when running non-windowed
- VOL Fixed size problem in non-Linux (bug in 6.12 only)
- VOL Fixed base problem in DFSDOS version (like vol A:)

The Linux version has been tested on several IDE and a few SCSI systems
and on Red-hat-5, Slackware-7, Suse-9.0 and Mandrake-10 distributions.

What is still needed is verification of the basic functionality on as many
SCSI and IDE systems as possible, and with as many different
Linux-distributions as possible.

To help with that, please install the 'dfsee' executable and
run the 'dfstest.dfs' script, which does some display-only
tests and produces a 'dfstest.log' file to be sent to me ...

./dfsee run dfstest

Please send 'dfstest.log'files you collect to support@dfsee.com and
include some details about the system and Linux version. Of course you can
report any problems or strange behaviour too :-)

The Linux executable must be installed with the 'executable' bit set
('chmod 755 dfsee') and when the install directory is not in the 'path'
you may need to start it as "./dfsee".
For full capabilities you need 'root' priviledges.
(login as 'root' or use the 'su' command)

It was designed for the Linux CONSOLE using the 'linux' terminal type, but
should work acceptably in an xwindow terminal too.
(the 'line-drawing' bug in an xterm is now solved :-)

Regards, JvW

SW: Harddisk image converter: DFSee/SVISTA/Virtual PC

09 Sep 2004 21:15:05

From: "Mark Dodel"

"If the harddisk-image-file name ends with .VHD, the file will converted
to a format useable by DFSee and SVISTA. New file extension will be .HDD.
Additionaly a .TXT file with geometry data will be created. Else the file
will converted to Virtual PC format (.VHD)

The program will copy geometry data from special block (VPC) or
..SVS/.TXT-file (SVISTA). If that does not work, the program will prompt
the user with reasonable default values.

Notice: The program does not copy images, it alters the original files and
renames thme thereafter..

known problems:

- currently SVISTA seem to ignore the hard disk geometry.
create the images binitially by SVISTA.

- this program only supports raw images,
not sparse/difference/packed("dynamicly extended") etc..

changes

 2004.07.25
recompiled with large file support

 2004.09.09
did not work with large files, since i uses 512 instead of 512.0.."

SW: eBayWatch/2 Ver 1.09x1

08 Sep 2004 21:36:15

From: Ken Kirchner

"eBayWatch/2 is an auction management tool for OS/2 users. It works solely
with the eBay auction site. It is meant to aid the user in searching for,
monitoring and bidding on auction items. eBayWatch/2 is copyright
freeware.

Required -
1) partition with long filename support (hpfs/jfs)
2) rexxutil.dll and rxsock.dll in libpath
3) must start from its work directory, or a program object which sets the
work directory "

Hello All,

eBay has made more changes last night. The changes break item import. I
have uploaded a new ver 1.09x to -
http://www.eclipse.net/~knkrchnr

It has only the fix to allow item import until eBay changes it again :-(

It will report itself as v1.09x1 so you know you have the later drop.

As usual, any feedback of things strange or broken is appreciated.

Thanks,
Ken

experience by some people has also been fixed. Various smaller fixes have
also been made, including CTCP TIME replies being encoded properly, /who
and /cancel work properly, and other internal error handling improvements.

Net: OS2 World: Calling the Community for help

05 Sep 2004 17:19:28

From: kimh@-despam-os2world.com

I assume that most of you have noticed that there has been some downtime
during the last two weeks. This has been due to the fact that we have had
some problem with one of the hard drives in the server and we would now
like to try to solve this issue.

To accomplish above we call for help from the eCS & OS2 community to help
out to improve the availability of OS2 World by asking for donation to be
able to finance the hardware upgrade of the server. Extra funding will be
used to finance as well an UPS to the server.

Following items are what we need:

1 Adaptec SCSI Raid 2100S Ultra160 32MB 1-Channel
1 Hitachi Ultrastar 146Z10 36GB Ultra320 Wide 68-pin

and as mentioned, we would like to go for an UPS as well:

1 APC BACK-UPS RS 500VA

The first two items, hard disk and raid card, will cost around $700 here
in Sweden and an UPS cost around $200.

If there are companies or individuals that would like to sponsor any of
above items or similar items, please then don't hesitate to contact me or
any of the regional contacts. To participate in this donation project and
to see who has earlier made donations, please visit following url:

http://www.os2world.com/sponsors/

We will also set up a diagram to show how this donation project is going.
