Perfect Niche Software, Inc., will be a participant in the Vendor Pro shareware exhibit at Warpstock 99 in Atlanta, GA, October 16-17, 1999. SMACK! for OS/2, will be demonstrated and a special discount offered to those attending Warpstock 99.

SMACK! is a fully Workplace Shell aware OS/2 application. It takes advantage of OS/2's many benefits, from drag-and-drop to multithreading. The application uses templates, and REXX is its native macro language. Like OS/2, Smack! has a consistent, predictable user interface. If you're familiar with the OS/2 Workplace Shell (WPS), then you'll be comfortable with Smack! in no time.

Smack! lets you print labels on any printer supported by OS/2, and supports almost every predefined label format. It lets you use varying fonts, color, and graphics on your labels, and control the object placement with precision. You can import data from several data formats, or drag and drop data from other popular OS/2 applications. Smack! supports an infinite Undo, making it easy for you to experiment until you get your labels just right.

An extensive list of Smack! features is located at http://www.perfectniche.com/html/features.html.

Smack! version 2.0 is being developed by Master Programmer, Bill Schindler, and is nearing completion. Smack! v. 2.0 will be provided as a FREE upgrade to all licensed users of Smack! v. 1.0 or greater.

Perfect Niche Software has attended Warpstock for the past two years and regret that we will not be in attendance this year. We appreciate the opportunity of participating in the Vendor Pro software exhibit and extend our best wishes for success to Warpstock 99.

We would like to show our appreciation and support to the OS/2 community by providing a significant discount to all attendees of Warpstock 99. Smack! has a M.S.R.P. of $69.95, but for this special event, attendees of Warpstock 99 can license Smack! for ONLY $44.95! That's a $25.00 savings!

Stop by the Vendor Pro software exhibit and see the demonstration of Smack! and be sure to pick up one of our flyers for complete ordering details.

Good Luck Warpstock 99!

SciTech Display Doctor 7.0 for OS/2
PREVIEW RELEASE 7
-----------------------------------

Where do you get it?

You can download SciTech Display Doctor 7.0 for OS/2 BETA 7 from our ftp site using the following URL:

ftp://ftp.scitechsoft.com/sdd/beta/os2/sdd-os2-7.0.0-b7.zip

What is SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2?

SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2 brings SciTech's proven DOS and Windows device support technologies to the OS/2 Operating System. Although one of the core features of our DOS and Windows products is the support for the VESA VBE/Core standard, the OS/2 version has nothing at all to do with VESA services. Rather SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2 incorporates the new SciTech Nucleus, Graphics Architecture device driver technology to bring SciTech's device support to the OS/2 platform.

SciTech Nucleus is a binary portable, OS neutral, device driver architecture. As binary portable drivers, SciTech can fully develop and test the core device drivers in the DOS and Windows environments, while being able to target any Intel x86 based OS as the runtime environment (such as OS/2). This essentially allows the OS/2 product to utilise the same SciTech binary device drivers as the DOS and Windows versions of the product, improving the quality and performance of the drivers for all supported operating systems.

Runtime Requirements

SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2 requires a version of OS/2 Warp 3 or OS/2 Warp 4 in order to run. More imporantly, it requires at least Warp 3 with fixpack 35, or Warp 4 with fixpack 5 installed. If you have a version with earlier fixpacks installed, SciTech Display Doctor will refuse to install.

List of all supported chips:

This is a complete list of the various graphics cards that this version of SciTech Display Doctor supports. Please note that this list refers to the actual chips being used, not a board-level implementation. Thus you will not see any products from Hercules or STB on the list, but their products are supported because they use S3, Cirrus, Tseng, etc. chips. Also, any card with less than 512KB of memory cannot be supported by SciTech Display Doctor.

Note that there are many more chipsets that will work with our existing legacy VBE/AF based drivers, that are not included in this list. For a complete list of all chipsets supported in our prior Windows and DOS products, please visit our web site. We are currently in the process of moving all our existing device support code to our new SciTech Nucleus device driver architecture. The above list only lists those drivers that have been converted, and we won't be supporting any chipsets not on the list until those drivers are properly converted.

Changes in BETA 7:

October 1

Today is the first day of an official agreement between IBM and SciTech for licensing SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2. IBM has licensed a special edition of our SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2 product, to be made publicly available via their drivers online pages, and in upcoming fixpacks for OS/2 Warp Client, OS/2 Warp Server for e-Business and Workspace On Demand. In essence SciTech Display Doctor will become the official display driver technology included in all OS/2 products for IBM.

The IBM Special Edition of SciTech Display Doctor contains a subset of the features contained in the full product, as outlined below:

The IBM Special Edition will be made available by IBM after it passes IBM's acceptance requirements. More information on this announcement will be forthcoming when we do our official press release on the matter.

Save a few bucks on your air fare, and you'll have more money to spend on OS/2 software when you get to Warpstock '99 Atlanta!

We've just updated the Travel page on the Warpstock web site with a list of online air ticket discounters. Click on them all and see what they offer. We did, and found that each one has different fares. Choose the best one and get yourself to Atlanta for the cheapest price.

Plus here's a trick: After you've found your "best fare" online, call the airline directly. Sometimes they'll sell you the same tickets on the same flights for even less. That's why we also added a link to the Yahoo Airline List, to make it easy for you. And don't forget that if you're flying on Delta, you should use the special Delta Airlines File Number on the Warpstock Travel page, for an even better price.

We also added a list of the major car rental agencies, along with their 800 numbers. Once you know your flight, save yourself a few more bucks and have an inexpensive car waiting for yourself at the airport.

Don't have time for all that? We also added a link to a travel agent directory.

Here's the Warpstock Travel page, just waiting for your visit:

http://www.warpstock.org/99/travel_info.html

It's time to make your travel plans. Use the Warpstock '99 Atlanta Travel Page to save a buck - and buy yourself some extra OS/2 software.

OS/2 users from around the world will meet October 16-17 in Atlanta. Visit http://www.warpstock.org for the complete information about this very special OS/2 event.

The Larsen Commander has reached its tenth public release, which is version 0.99. You can download it and find more information at:

http://home.sol.no/~leilarse/lcmd/index.html

Larsen Commander is a fine 32-Bit GUI File Manager for OS/2 Warp that has a "look and feel" that is much like the famous Norton Commander. The most notable difference is that Larsen Commander is pure GUI and still has a built in command line and a scrollable console monitor. Powerful, nice and snappy.

I have just finished ThermoProtect V1.30, and the new features of this version are as follows:

Now ThermoProtect is fully compatible with LM79. I thought it was before, but some of the code messed up LM79. Now it is fixed. Thanks to Bob Babcock for finding it out.

!EnvSetup.EXE user interface bug fix, now allows smoother operation.

@Now default delay is changed to 1.6 second, the lowest delay value is still 1 second. If you do not delete your enviro.cfg file, it will stay where you set it at.

The file is available NOW at:

From Irv Spalten as posted on comp.os.os2.bugs:

Subject FP's have been released.

Boulder did have a SPACE problem, and it appears that FP 12 ran into it. Boulder ran out of space, FP 12 and FP 42 has some corrupt/missing files. All should be working now. All the FP 12 RSU date stamps are from today at 6:30 AM. We (IBM) are now going to be placing a 'header' file in the FTP directory. For instance, you will see this in XR_W042

*
* Initial Release of OS/2 Warp 3 FP 42
* 09/30/99
* Diskette Images XR_W042.1DK to XR_W042.JDK
*

In XR_M012 you will see this :

*
* Initial Release of OS/2 Warp 4 FP 12
* 09/30/99
* Diskette Images XR_M012.1DK to XR_M012.HDK
* 09/30/99 1:30 PM CST
* Diskette Image XR_M012.FDK replaced, file was corrupt
*

These headers will be updated as we change any file for any reason.

We also know people look for new directories, and grab files. The initial headers will now say uploading in progress or not verified/incomplete, and then replaced with an official release date

We (VOICE and Mensys) have been requested to "name" the party/social event on Saturday night at Warpstock 99.

The name originally mentioned was: "OS/2 has NOT left the building".

Any and all suggestions will be considered .. and are welcomed. In the end .. it is our (VOICE & Mensys) decision (as sponsors).

Please respond within 24 hours as we are under a Marketing deadline to get this done.

Several of the smartest people who need it least have been poking around lately to revive the venerable old Warp Pharmacy. I find that I have done something unusual to one of my systems from time to time and DESPERATELY need some help to get if healed. I've had my butt saved more than once at teamos2help and the SCOUG help desks, and just calling a smarter friend for advice.

We have the technology. We can do this online now. Around the clock, near real time, effective support to people with ill computers. We have a growing group of people with a vision of what we can do. We have two upcoming opportunities to "feel the pulse" of the community -- at Warpstock Europe and Atlanta -- to get this rolling.

We have had some renewed interest in this important project at the #SCOUG chats on IRC recently. We will skip the regular Saturday Warp Systems Chat this week to focus our energies on a Speakup being hosted by VOICE to propel the plans for WarpDoctor a little farther.

Please join us. Don't worry -- at this critical stage, we're not going to be asking you to help us build code. What we really need is ideas from Warp users of all skill levels to help us define what it is we need, so we can develop plans for something that will be effective for all of us.

Please come to the #VOICE channel of irc.webbnet.org this Saturday at 1700 UTC (1300 EDT, 1000 PTD) to share your ideas on what our Doctor should be able to do for us.

I guarantee this will be an exciting project with great benefits for all OS/2 users for many years to come. If you join us now, you can say "I was there when it all started."

Go to http://www.os2voice.org or http://www.scoug.com/chat for more info on this and other meetings, and for tips and software for getting started with IRC.

Just informing you all about a new version of The Wall, now renamed to Zampa. The current revision is 0.99.

Zampa is a program to administer the configuration files for the built-in firewall in IBM TCP/IP v4.1 and above for OS/2. This firewall is not at all documented in OS/2, but with the help from the redbook on the AIX firewall, and with help from a few other people, I've been able to make this program that does just about everything - automagically. Configuring the firewall is now a breeze :)

New in this version, except from the name change, is mainly a few small bugfixes and one big one: You can now work with more than 10 firewall rules ;) Rather embarrassing bug, there...

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to come up with a new version, but here it is... :)

We are delighted to announce that Serenity Systems will be sponsoring a pavilion of over a dozen ISVs in the exhibit hall at Warpstock. The plan is to demonstrate what Managed Client (r) computing is all about.

We will be featuring WiseManager 1.2. At Warp Expo West, WiseManager built a network and populate the desktop with the Vendor 100 applications. We are bringing the demonstration to Warpstock.

We will also be demonstrating the new family of WiseTalker Database Server products, including new features like support for C++. We will also preview our Building Automation and Security Software (BASS) program.

The pavilion will demonstrate how traditional PCs and Manged Clients can co-exist. Many of the Managed Clients will be running on IBM Network Stations 2800.

We look forward to meeting users and consultants at the pavilion, and demonstrating a new dimension of desktop computing, made possible by the capabilities of OS/2.

More details regarding the pavilion will be provided.

The first Styler/2 registrable version is now available!!!

You can download the first registrable version of Styler/2 (smw099.zip - 228 KB) from:

ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/smw099.zip

or later:

ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/new/smw099.zip

or:

ftp://ftp.ghostbbs.cx/pub/os2/os2team/alcant/smw099.zip

The registration program, which will allow to get rid of the time limit, although is ready and fully tested, is not yet included in the program archive since I still have to work out some details. It shall be available for download in few days! In future it will be enclosed in the program archive, probably as a page of the preferences notebook.

This is still version 0.99. I plan to distribute version 1.0 before the end of October.

There is no new feature in this release although there are many hidden enhancements that should make the program more stable, run faster and use less memory.

Developers at every skill level will learn new techniques, configuration.cepts and real world solutions in the programming sessions at Warpstock. An all-star cast of programming gurus will present a dozen sessions on software development.

First, master programmer Timur Tabi (developer of OS/2's TIMER0, RTMIDI and MPU401 while at IBM) will offer six presentations at both the beginner and advanced levels. Start with Timur's "Introduction to Programming", then stay in your chair for his presentations on Rexx, Assembly language, and programming the Presentation Manager. And don't miss his two-part session on writing Device Drivers, a highlight of Warpstock '99.

Next, join John Urbaniak and Gwen Veneskey, the authors of "Object REXX by Example", for a two part session on programming with Object REXX. In Basic Concepts you'll hear an overview of the many ideas behind object orientation and how to use them. Then you'll want to be there for Advanced Concepts, where you'll learn how to build user-friendly multithreaded GUI applications containing music, sound and animation. John and Gwen work for custom software ISV Aviar, developers of V-Trex and Oz.

Finally, Paul Hethmon of Hethmon Brothers and Inet.Mail fame will present the basics of TCP/IP programming. You'll hear Paul emphasize what's different on OS/2 as opposed to standard BSD style sockets, and you'll hear him cover both client and server side sockets, hostname resolution, TCP/IP 4.1 and 4.2 differences, and a simple C++ socket class to encapsulate it all. Don't miss this presentation on coding for the information superhighway!

A new version of CHECKINI is due with some specific additional routines to fix two problems that some might be having with their ini-files. These problems are:

1st: Duplicate DRIV blocks in OS2SYS.INI. Leading to all kinds of different symtoms like objects not working;

2nd: A corrupted first node in OS2SYS.INI for a given drive which causes the drive letter itself to be replaced to some other filename. This leads to problems as drive X: suddenly changed to e.g. foo, so all files on X: are shown by the WPS as foo\filename.

Now I need some volanteers with these problems to see if CHECKINI really is able to fix these problems.
