I had used an earlier version of Gnutella [1.1.5, I think] and short-sightedly deleted it when attempting to install the latest version. Hence when I saw the piece in the October issue about installing LimeWire I got excited. But when I accessed limewire.com, there it was again: Ver. 1.1.7 will only work with Java 1.3. Very frustrating.Tim's reply:
Is there an archive somewhere from which we can extract 1.1.6d?
Les:And finally Les reports:
Try 1.1.7 anyway. The Java 1.3 "requirement" may simply be for the swingall.jar file -- described in the article.
Mark, I received the copy of your email to Tim Sipples in which he said that I ought to try the latest version, but to use the Sun swingall.jar file.Editor's note: Since Les was successful in getting the latest version of LimeWire installed using Sun's Swingall.jar we are not providing the 1.1.6 version of LimeWire which Tim sent us. If anyone really feels the need for this they can send an email to editor@os2voice.org, but be aware it's 600+ KB zip file.
I did that, and it worked!
It seemed a shame to download that monster file, then extract only one out of a myriad to use it, but all's fair in love and gnutelling.
I mention that I didn't receive Tim's note separately, hence I wasn't able to detach version 1.1.16d from his note to me. Maybe that was a good thing, because it forced me to go to the Sun site and d/l the later swingall.jar.
In any case, I'm glad to have LimeWire back. Thanks to you both.
