OS/2 Groups a live again on IBM News Server
There are several OS/2 focused news groups reactivated on IBM's public
news server recently:
News server is news://news.software.ibm.com
Groups:
ibm.software.os2.lan
ibm.software.os2.misc
ibm.software.os2.rexx
ibm.software.os2.warp
So before IBM decides to shut them down for lack of use (and lack of
promotion) let's show IBM there are still some OS/2 users out there who
appreciate information forums devoted to OS/2.
Warpstock Europe is not for OS!2 users only
Warpstock Europe 2001 is for everyone with a healthy interest in
computers. Being an OS/2 or eComStation user is absolutely no requirement
for attending the event. Even if you are running Linux, Windows, MacOS or
something else, you will still be able to learn about new and exciting
things at Warpstock Europe. No matter what computing environment you are
working in, the three-day presentation schedule contains several sessions
that will surely be of interest to you.
IT professionals and System Administrators will benefit greatly from
several lectures on LAN management in a heterogeneous environment. Alain
Rykaert's presentation on LAN Server Management Tools, discusses a number
of self written REXX procedures for LAN management, based on many years of
experience in the field. Likewise, as IBM's WorkSpace On-Demand now
supports more platforms than ever, Oliver Mark's overview of this product
should certainly be of interest to you. Starfire Titan also offers
cross-platform administration for enterprise networked systems. Come to
Warpstock Europe to discover all these products.
Programmers are in for a real treat at Warpstock Europe 2001. Serenity
Systems' own Kim Cheung will be there to talk about C to REXX interface
technology and how it can be applied in all kinds of commercial packages.
Rony Flatscher will be talking about Object REXX and how it can become a
powerful development tool not only for OS/2, but in a multiplatform
environment as well, as it has been made available for AIX, Linux and
Windows. Another one of Rony's presentations, which should interest Java
programmers, discusses Java Bean scripting using REXX. Finally, Stefan
Schwarzer will introduce Python as another cross-platform high level
scripting language that is gaining popularity.
As the USB hardware interface is extremely popular nowadays, you should
come to Warpstock Europe for a general introduction about the way USB
works. In addition, programmers who want to exploit the benefits of USB
will actually learn how to develop their own USB drivers.
Users of the excellent image manipulation program "The Gimp", running on
Linux, Windows or OS/2 will definitely learn a few new tricks during
Gerrit Schoenmaker's and Onno Tabak's session about font installation and
graphic tips and tricks.
If you have been thinking about trying OS/2 or eComStation, without giving
up the ability to run your Windows applications, you should definitely
attend the "Odin - update, tips and tricks" session, where you will be
astounded by the number of Windows programs that can be run seamlessly on
the OS/2 Desktop today. Moreover, the introduction of "Virtual PC for
OS/2" by Innotek should be enough reason to attend Warpstock Europe and
discover this exciting new product that will extend your use of OS/2 and
eComStation by letting you run even more applications than you ever
thought possible.
The Warpstock Europe 2001 Conference will be held on November 2-4, 2001 at
the 'KH Limburg' College in Diepenbeek (Hasselt), Belgium. Warpstock
Europe is an annual gathering of developers, vendors and users of the
OS/2 and eComStation operating systems, for the purpose of education,
providing information and support to everyone with an interest in these
operating systems or related technology. More information is available at
the Warpstock Europe web site http://warpstock.os2.org
New builds of Dialog Enhancer for Warp4/Aurora and eCS
New beta builds of Dialog Enhancer for both Warp4/Aurora and eCS are now
available from the Dialog Enhancer website at http://www.dialogenhancer.com/beta_dl.html
The following is from the DE website describing DE.
It's almost too good to believe.... Dialog Enhancer '99 provides the answer to the
problem of the inconsistent look of the dialogs on your OS/2 Warp, Aurora or
eComStation system. The system is overhauled during a sophisticated graphical
installation, and is active immediately after reboot. Your desktop finally will look
complete, dialogs will no longer be a mismatch of different fonts, icons have been
tweaked and much, much more.
The system uses techniques used by no other enhancer utility to create the new look
and feel. Unlike any other WPS enhancer available, there is no underlying application
hogging CPU time, no slowing of your system due to a mass of registered
replacement classes, no random system crashes due to dodgy system hooks, no
wasted memory (Dialog Enhancer actually reduces the memory required by the
operating system.), and no danger of system corruption due to an advanced
installer/uninstaller application which makes many system checks before applying the
changes to over 60 files.
contact/2 - Preview available
The Preview of the address manager "contact/2 " is now available.
Contact/2 is PM program for the administration of addresses, telephone
numbers and appropriate information. It has some interfaces to other
programs, e.g. Webbrowser and Email clients clients can be integrated.
There is further information on http://www.subsys.de/contact/contactinfo.htm
Contact/2 is Shareware. The Preview is however usable with the exception
some export and import filters are not working. For developers of free
software for OS/2 or eCS licencing is free.
[Moderator's note: Currently only the German version is available, but the
web page is in English. The site states that the English version will be
available around the end 2001.]
ThirdEye update (1.51)
ThirdEye is still under active development. We introduced support for:
Ricoh, Canon, Fuji, Casio, Kodak (25, 3200) digital cameras in October.
Use these cameras with REXX library and NetDrive plugin.
PM-version is delayed one more time.

HTMLtoPDF 1.0 released
HTMLtoPDF version 1.0 has been released. HTMLtoPDF is an OS/2
Presentation Manager (PM) front-end for the htmldoc program which
converts HTML files to Adobe PDF or PostScript format. HTMLtoPDF
simplifies the process of using htmldoc by providing a point-and-click
interface for many options as well as a direct command line for more
advanced users who already know the htmldoc parameters.
HTMLtoPDF 1.0 can be downloaded from Don Eitner's website at:
http://freiheit.syntheticdimension.net/os2-myapps.shtml
In order to use HTMLtoPDF you must have successfully installed the htmldoc
program, version 1.8.14 or later. I recommend Alexander Mai's port of
htmldoc 1.8.15 which can be downloaded from
http://homepages.tu-darmstadt.de/~st002279/os2/html/os2stuff.html#htmldoc
HTMLtoPDF was built for OS/2's Presentation Manager (PM) graphical user
interface. It is believed to operate on any PC running OS/2 version 2.x
or higher (Warp 3, Warp 4, eComStation, Warp Server for eBusiness, etc).

DECalc 3.3 released
DECalc, the multi-function OS/2 PM calculator, has been updated to version
3.3. This is considered to be a singificant update for anyone using the
base conversions (DEC to HEX, BIN to DEC, etc) or computing entirely in
non-decimal base systems such as BIN, HEX and OCT.
New features and fixes in DECalc 3.3 are:
* Added option to auto-save memory values on exit
* Install.cmd can now install to a directory with spaces in its name
*
Fixed conversion bug when calculating in BIN/HEX/OCT modes
* Conversion of
negative DEC to BIN/HEX/OCT now uses absolute value, fixes crash
DECalc 3.3 can be downloaded from Don Eitner's website at:

F version 4.60 (stable) released
On October 14th, Duy Nguyen and Michel Normand have released version 4.60
of F, the "Swiss army knive" of file managers. F is a freeware text-mode
multi-platform application. Supported operating systems are OS/2, AIX,
BSD, Linux, and Win32.
F is not only a very configurable file manager, but also offers an FTP/FXP
client, an editor with syntax-highlighting, numerous tools for developers,
simple e-mail and news clients, as well as small HTTP and FTP servers. F
comes with its own FFP (F to F protocol) for file transfers and remote
file execution, providing services for remote administration. Note that
the interface is keyboard-only.
This new stable release version contains all new features that were
introduced in the previous betas, like VFS support for several new formats
without the need for external helpers, plus several bug fixes.
Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes Unofficial Patch
Another unofficial patch :)
This time for Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes.
I patched 2 bugs. First one is our beloved Soundblaster-bug, so SB-sound
works now. The other one was a nasty bug, that crashed the VDM. It was the
programmers fault. They had no idea of IRQ-processing handlers.
Now the game is 100% playable under OS/2 Warp / eCS. Have fun.
cu Kiewitz
P.S.: Page updates to OS2world are currently not possible.
http://www.os2world.com/games will be updated soon.
