Installation and Setup

SNAP Graphics/se installs on Convenience Package for OS/2 Warp 4 and
Convenience Package for OS/2 Warp Server for e-business.

To install SNAP Graphics/se:

1. Unzip all the files into a temporary directory, something other than
x:\snap, such as x:\snapinst, where x:\ is your boot drive.

Use the following command and required parameters to unzip the files:

snapse218 -dir -over

2. Run setup sdd from the directory where you installed the files from
above.

3. Reboot your system.
(The system will boot up in the 640x480x256 display mode.)

4. Once the system is running, go to the second page of the 'Screen'
properties tab and verify that your monitor is selected. If "Standard
monitor types" and "Unknown monitor" is selected or the wrong monitor is
selected, then select your monitor Manufacturer and Model from the lists.

5. Go the 'System Properties' dialog box to select all the available
resolutions and color depths.

6. (Optional) Reboot your system.
(You need to shutdown for the changes to take effect. Reboot you system
now or when it is more convenient.)

When you have completed the installation, all the SNAP Graphics/se command
line utilities will be located in the x:\snap directory, where x:\ is the
drive where you have OS/2 located (i.e. your boot drive).

List of Supported Chips

This is a list of the graphics chipsets most recently supported by SNAP
Graphics/se. For a complete list of all chip sets supported, refer to the
readme.txt file in the package. This list refers to the actual chips being
used, not a board level implementation. Thus you will not see any products
from Hercules or STB on the list, but their products are supported because
they use S3, Cirrus, Tseng, etc. chips. Also, any card with less than
512KB of memory cannot be supported by SNAP Graphics/se.

Recent additions include:

* GM19:
o Intel i915G/GV

* GM18:
o Enhanced Acceleration and Zooming Support for Matrox MGA-P650

* GM17:
o ATI Radeon 9100
o ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
o Matrox MGA-P650
o NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 8x
o S3 ProSavage DDR (VIA KM266)

* GM16:
o ATI Radeon 9200
o NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

* GM15:
o ATI Radeon 9000 Pro
o NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440 8X

Supported resolutions and color depths are adapter dependent and will vary
depending on the amount of graphics memory, the chip set driver
implementation, and the monitor selected/detected.

Service and Support

If you have purchased an active contract for Passport Advantage with
Software Maintenance, the terms and conditions of that contract will
determine the services to which you are entitled.

OS/2 Service Releases are available only by contacting IBM OS/2 Technical
Support. For U.S. customers entitled to technical support, the driver can
be obtained by calling 1-800-IBM-SERV (1-800-426-7378) to open problem
record (PMR). Inform the Service Coordinator that you want to receive the
latest SciTech SNAP Graphics/se for OS/2.

For non-U.S. customers, contact the IBM Support Center in your country the
latest OS/2 Service Release.

In addition, you can report suspected Program defects via fax, mail or
electronically (where available). A defect is defined as a code error that
causes one of the following: (1) data corruption, (2) regression of
supported function, major application or device driver compatibility
error, (3) frequent trap or system hang, (4) serious visual problem or (5)
a significant portion of hardware or software environment is non-
functional. IBM will review your defect report and if IBM, in its sole
discretion, determines that corrective code is required, IBM may issue
corrective code in the form of a Fixpak or Program refresh. IBM does not
guarantee that all defects can or will be corrected. Defect support is
planned to be available for the Program until the service expiration date
of the IBM OS/2 operating system product on which the Program is designed
to run.

IBM reserves the right to modify or withdraw the above referenced support
at any time.

Please refer to the OS/2 Defect Support information in the OS/2 Strategy
for 2003 at http://www-3.ibm.com/software/os/warp/strategy/.

Additional Information

Please review the readme.txt file in the package for additional
information.

The most current version of this device driver package is part of the IBM
Software Choice offerings.

Job: OS/2 inquiry: Chicago Job Opportunities

07 Oct 2004 20:38:57 -0500

From: "Watts, Paul"

I am a Senior Recruiter for Siemens and we are looking to hire 30 + OS/2
Server Engineers in the Lake Zurich location. As you can imagine, I am
having a difficult time on the job boards locating individuals to talk
with about this opportunity. I would like to invite you to take a look
at the attached job description and ask that you please pass on to your
OS/2 user group in hopes they might be interested or be able to refer
someone else. I have posted the position on Careerbuilder and Monster for
candidates to apply or the can just respond to this email. We are looking
for individuals with all levels of experience and an OS/2 certification is
not necessarily needed if the person has strong networking/administration
experience in the industry and open to work with OS/2.

We will be having an open house by invitation only on October 20th & 21st
and making offers to qualified candidates that same week. So please share
this with your peers and let me know if there is anything else I need to
do. Thank you in advance for any help you may offer and I hope to hear
from you soon. Have a great day.

Respectfully,

Paul Watts

SW: DFSee version 6.14 released

05 Oct 2004 19:34:42 -0500

From: "Jan van Wijk"

DFSee version 6.14 has been released today, a few fixes and
enhancements to the DFSDISK and DFSCHECK procedures plus
some new scripts for the Linux version.

DFSee is the SWISS-ARMY-KNIFE for disk and filesystem problems. With
FDISK-like displays, analysis and recovery, FIX commands, UNDELETE for
HPFS/NTFS, imaging and cloning. More details at:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee.htm

Direct download links:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfsee6xx.zip
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/dfsee614.zip
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=dfsee

Just the 'dfsee' Linux distribution with documentation:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfsee6xx_linux.tgz

Most important functional changes since 6.13:

- Linux dfstart, dfsdisk, dfscheck, dfsquick, dfsquery scripts
- Linux Fixed clear-screen at startup for non-windowed scripts
- DFSDISK Command renamed from 'UNFDISK' for consistency
- DFSDISK Documented cmd for 'dfsdisk' procedure (dfscmds.txt)
- DFSDISK Made this an 'auto-quit' command for easy scripting
- DFSDISK Changed menu: Actions -> DFSDISK, Find partitions
- DFSCHECK Added to menu: Actions -> DFSCHECK, Check filesystems
- DFSCHECK Run DOxxxx.DFS script on one or all partitions
- DFSCHECK Made this an 'auto-quit' command for easy scripting
- DFSTEST Script enhanced with display of RAID specific stuff
- Keyboard Shift-F1/Shift-F10 now alias for F1/F10 (for Gnome)
- LVM Display values on recovery using LVM-signature sect
- PART Handle type 0xfd (RAID) just as native Linux (0x83)
- PRESTORE Fixed disk-description alignments produced on Linux
- VIRT Removed test on .PDx version older than 5.06

The Linux version has been tested on several IDE and a few SCSI systems
and on Red-hat-5, Slackware-7, Suse-9.0 and Mandrake-10 distributions.

Note:
There is a design change in the Linux 2.6 kernel for disk-translation that
affects many disk-tools including DFSee. The effect is that the geometry
used will be DIFFERENT from what the BIOS uses.
Using disk-tools (including Suse 9.1 and Fedore core-2 install!) that are
not aware of these changes may lead to problems on multi-boot systems.
(Windows not booting, OS/2 or eCS loosing LVM info)

SW: SuperVersion 2.0 Beta 3 is out

05 Oct 2004 09:21:36 -0500

From: John.BijnensDESPAM@celkunststoffen.khlim.be

Superversion is a multi-user distributed version control system based on
change sets. A major focus in its development is efficiency and
ease-of-use. Features include a graphical user interface, branches,
conflict detection and resolution, a history tree view, export and report
functions, CVS-compatible keyword substitution, overridable file type
autodetection and a transactional internal database.

Conflicts arising from concurrent commits are now solved
semi-automatically. A task list of outstanding merges is maintained. The
history graph was rewritten from scratch for cleaner looks and improved
speed. It can now be filtered to show only recent changes. Merges now
appear in the graph as dotted lines. When creating a project, a HEAD
marker is created. A problem with marker synchronisation and a number of
minor bugs were fixed.

It works perfectly on OS/2.

SW: EAToolBox-200401005

05 Oct 2004 06:49:44 -0500

From: Herwig Bauernfeind

This is the first public release of the Extended Attributes Toolbox.

This is a set of tools to handle problems deriving from false extended
attributes attached to files and/or directories. Unlike other tools that
remove all extended attributes, these tools can remove selected extended
attributes (.ICON, .ICONPOS, .LONGNAME, .SHORTNAME) without touching
others in a simple and conveniant way.

In addition there is a program that compares the real filename/directory
name against the attached .LONGNAME and offers possibilities to resolve
this in case this is an error (it is definitely not always an error, but
it definitely is sometimes an error!)

Please, make sure you read the enclosed documentation before using any
program from this toolbox.

I have been using this stuff for approximately a year now and it turned
out to be very useful, so I decided to make it publicly available.
Nevertheless, handle with care.

SW: GCC 3.3.4 / LIBC 0.6 Alpha 2

03 Oct 2004 10:21:28 -0500

From: Adrian Gschwend

Our LIBC and GCC mastermind Knut St. Osmundsen released some great new
stuff for the coders out there: GCC 3.3.4 and LIBC 0.6 Alpha 2!

One of the most interesting things in LIBC is fork() support!! Finaly we
should be able to completely get rid of EMX soon :)

Get it here:
ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/GCC-3.3.4-alpha2.zip

Changes in this release (summary from a mail by Knut to me):

--snip--
The netlabs libc cvs have been updated to contain the codebase for the
release.

CVSROOT:
:pserver:guest@www.netlabs.org:/netlabs.cvs/libc

CVS password: "readonly"

I can't stop myself from boasting a bit on the effors put down here, I
hope you will excuse me. The diff between LIBC 0.5.1 and 0.6.0a2 is 62493
lines - 47654 added, 10086 removed. A good bit is borrowed from BSD, but
still it's a decent amount of work there. And for the next release there
is already a diff of > 8000 lines on the subject of signals waiting on my
disk.

As I said some weeks ago, this alpha is timebombed. It will stop working
by the end of this month (October 04). Hopefully I will have a new
release ready by then which needs not to be timebombed.

The reason for the timebombing is not because I wanna be a bitch and make
difficulties. It's simply because I don't wanna create legacy yet. The
legacy I don't wanna create is the structure of the shared memory which
all future LIBC versions will share and use to manage interprocess
process thing.
--snip--

Thanks a lot to Knut! If you have remarks or questions you might contact
Knut directly. We hang out on #netlabs on the eCS Networks as well. For a
list of servers check
http://wiki.netlabs.org/index.php/IRC_server_settings

The nickname of Knut is "bird".
