os2.org is back online

OS2.org is back (Posted by ) (al ) Hello everybody, finally we made it and OS2.org is (mostly) back online. We moved our new server to our new provider OpenIT in Düsseldorf, Germany. We also would to thank all the people for the donations to give us the opportunity to buy the new server hardware (IBM xSeries with 1.1GB RAM and a extra harware raid controller)!!

Our thanks goes to:

TeamOS2 OS/2 Ruhr e.V., Dimitrios Bogiatzoules, Thomas Mensak, Logic Consult GmbH, Markus Montkowski, Christian Wonschina, Jörg Skottke, Lothar Söns, Wolfgang Reinken, Frank Beythien, Dieter Eckhardt, Sebastian Wittmeier, Karl Heinz Schmidthaus, Gerrit Schoenmaker, Tom Steen, Howard Winter, Daniela Engert, Falko Eickel, Manfred Heiderrich, Joup Nijenhuis, Jaap Stil, Jan van der Heide, M.R. Willemse, Peter Verweij, Robert Fuchs, Frank Meilinger, Jörg Denninghoff, Radu Trimbitas, Aroa Informatik, Sen. Anonymous

Additionaly we also would like to thank Markus Montkowski very very much. He spent a lot of time during the last 2 weeks to setup the new server and install the software. Thanks Markus!

All the OS2.org pages now use DB2 as the database backend. That for we had to port big parts of the backend software, but we are not finished yet. The problems you may encounter will now be taken care of step by step. Everything will be good, we only need a little bit more patience ;-)

XWorkplace and WarpIN 1.0.0 released

It has finally happened: WarpIN and XWorkplace have both been released with the magic 1.0.0 version number.

1. WarpIN V1.0.0 has been released.

WarpIN is intended to become the new universal OS/2 installer. It is becoming more and more popular among OS/2 developers because of its flexibility and ease of use. It has full system configuration (CONFIG.SYS, WPS classes, WPS objects) and can fully undo all the changes to your system again.

V1.0.0 fixes a few more bugs over previous versions and can hopefully server as the reference implementation for package creators.

2. After about five years of development, XWorkplace V1.0.0 has been released.

XWorkplace is the most feature-rich freeware Workplace Shell enhancer on the planet, and even better, it is OpenSource. XWorkplace is the successor to my popular XFolder utility and has become a Netlabs project.

For details, please refer to the download address below.

V1.0.0 fixes more bugs and gives you a few new features too, most importantly, folder split views a la Windows Explorer.

Even though we are now at 1.0.0, this does not mean that XWorkplace is bug-free. In fact there are still some known issues, but I believe that this version is quite usable.

Note: To install XWorkplace, you also need WarpIN V0.9.14 or higher, since XWorkplace now comes as a self-installing executable. I recommend using at least WarpIN V0.9.16 to avoid the problem with your existing XCenter disappearing on install.

To get the new WarpIN and XWorkplace, please go to:

http://www.xworkplace.org

WarpIN and XWorkplace are Netlabs projects, released under the GNU General Public Licence. The source code is available on the Netlabs CVS server. See www.netlabs.org/nosa and the above address for details.

We have created four mailing lists at groups.yahoo.com:

-- warpin-user
-- warpin-dev
-- xworkplace-user
-- xworkplace-dev

for WarpIn and XWorkplace users and developers, respectively.

A bugtracker for both WarpIN and XWorkplace is currently being set up and will be installed shortly. Please watch the usual OS/2 news channel for an announcement when it is ready.

Have fun!

GNAT 3.15p binary for OS/2 available

Following the release of GNAT 3.15p by ACT last week, I have now compiled a binary for OS/2 V4 / eCS.

This is again based upon EMX 9d with GCC 2.8.1. See Arnaud Charlet's post in comp.lang.ada and the readme for more details.

It is currently available as

http://dwparsons.bei.t-online.de/gnat-3.15p-os2-bin-20021124.zip

and it is expected that it will be mirrorred by cs.nyu.edu in ftp://cs.nyu.edu/pub/gnat/3.15p/contrib/os2
