Hi, I just found that there are OS/2 drivers for the i740 on Intel's site. The
URL is:
ftp://download.intel.com/design/graphics/drivers/lpv1.1.zip
It's listed as a legacy driver :) works great here...it does take a little more
time than usual when switching to graphics mode, but otherwise, installed and worked
right the first time.
Bill Law Says:
I've spent less and less time on the OS/2 port. Meanwhile, the OS/2 port has
made incredible progress (it seems the XPViewer runs there better than just about
anywhere, including perhaps Windows). So I guess this makes me the "ex"
OS/2 platform owner. The *real* owners are now Henry Sobotka (sobotka@axess.com)
and John Fairhurst (mjf35@hermes.cam.ac.uk).
I'm working on getting them ordained as the official "owners" of the
OS/2 platform. I think the OS/2 platform demonstrates the value of Mozilla as much
as anything else out there.

InnoVal Executive Applauds Ruling in Sun vs Microsoft Announces New Release of
J Street Mailer
InnoVal Systems Solutions, Inc. president Dan Porter today announced his unequivocal
endorsement for the decision by Ronald M. Whyte, U.S. District Judge in San Jose,
California. In a preliminary injunction, Judge Whyte gave Microsoft 90 days to rework
both its Windows 98 and its Internet Explorer browser to make them compatible with
Sun's Java specifications. The judge also ruled that there was a strong likelihood
that Sun would prevail in a full trial in its suit against Microsoft for copyright
infringement and unfair competition.
"Today's Wall Street Journal called it a resounding victory," said
Porter. "I agree. And I'm also delighted to see the attention Java and OS/2
are getting in the Federal lawsuit of Microsoft. I'm not so very confident about
remedy that will benefit the wider user community but I am pleased to see confirmation
of what we in the OS/2 and Java communities have long believed; that Gates and company
are capricious about innovation and predatory in the marketplace."
"This is encouraging news for those of us in the OS/2 and Java communities.
My hope is that ISVs and developers will take this news as encouragement to further
develop and enhance non-Windows specific products or to build multi-platform solutions,"
said Porter. "We will. Within the next two weeks we will release a new version
of J Street Mailer. This is primarily a maintenance release. We felt we had to do
this before pursuing further innovations. Following this release, we will work with
users to try and find a consensus on the features most needed."
"We are working in a very tightened-down market and we find that we must
start doing things differently. One thing we are doing is eliminating telephone
technical support and email technical support beyond thirty days. It is too costly.
I have a choice to make about our resources and I would rather put money and effort
into product development and improvement as well as our profitable consulting business.
These changes in technical support will cover all of products including Web Willy
Watch, Post Road Mailer, J Street Mailer, and Hacksaw." InnoVal will monitor
the newsgroups and participate in end-user support as time permits.
Porter continued, "On the brighter side we have decided to offer the J Street
Mailer source code, free of charge, to any licensee of J Street Mailer who wishes
to improve the product and distribute those improvements. My goal here is to advance
the use of Java applications and specifically the J Street Mailer. Source. Anyone
interested in obtaining the source code should contact Marianne Roderus at innoval@ibm.net."
"We were hoping that Web Willy Watch for OS/2 would do better than it has.
The Windows version is doing very well. Regrettably, it outsells the OS/2 version
at least thirty to one. We will likely enhance Web Willy Watch soon. When we do,
we will release OS/2 and Windows version simultaneously."
J Street Mailer is a full function Internet email client written completely in
Java. It is getting excellent reviews for its rich function and its compatibility
across all Java enabled platforms including Windows 95/98/NT, JavaOS, OS/2, Linux,
Solaris, and AIX.
For more information, see InnoVal's home page at http://www.innoval.com

From the horses mouth, posted on a Slashdot forum:
http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=98/11/18/1235258&pid=641#688
"Well... unless people submit it, we don't use OS/2 so aren't really up
to speed on it. All the people I know who were using OS/2 have switched. If you
want to see more OS/2 coverage, submit interesting stuff, and it has a chance of
getting published."
For those of you who don't know, Slashdot (http://slashdot.org/)
is a "news for nerds" web site, that posts news articles of interest to
the more technically inclined. Unfortunately, they tend to post lots of articles
that would be of interest only to Linux users, without posting the same number of
articles for users of other alternative OS's, like OS/2, MacOS, and BeOS.
So, if there is any MAJOR news in the OS/2 world (i.e. 99% of what you see on
WarpCast does NOT apply), it should be emailed to the Slashdot crew.

OS/2 users who have the popular new strategy game Entrepreneur can take advantage
of the only OS/2 multiplayer service to take part in GAME NIGHT V.
Stardock.Net is a free gaming service that comes with Entrepreneur. In Entrepreneur,
players must take the role of the CEO of a corporation bent at world economic domination
through any means necessary.
The game has become a real hit in recent months thanks in part to the fact that
the game parodies much of the tactics of Microsoft.
Entrepreneur can be played single player or multiplayer over the Internet. There
are versions for OS/2, Windows 95, and Windows NT available.
Not only is Entrepreneur the hottest OS/2 strategy game but it is also very inexpensive
-- only $29.95. Users can visit http://www.stardock.com
and order/download Entrepreneur 1.5. Entrepreneur has received universally positive
reviews from every major webzine and game magazine in print.
Game Night V will start at 8pm on Friday, November 20 on Stardock.Net (which
is connected to from within Entrepreneur).

Free mixer for Crystal Semiconductor mode 2 codecs was updated to version 0.02.
Unlike the first version now it can be called a full-featured mixer (ADC settings
now work, mixer configuration is completely saved/restored).

The Notebook/2 Site at http://www.os2ss.com/users/DrMartinus/notebook.htm
is continuoulsly updated, but I think it is time to send another message through
WarpCast about it.
We are counting now almost 200 Pentiums/Pentium IIs, and the number is still
growing. Some popular brands haven't appeared yet (like Panasonic), but they are
due to be included soon.
What is worth mentioning here are the continuous expansions of the installation
guides for video, audio and PCMCIA, of which the first two are also relevant and
helpful for non-notebook users.
Further, I have started including PCMCIA cards. There are only very few entries
yet, so I would appreciate, if you use PCMCIA cards, your contribution. Just go
to the site and select the submission form for PCMCIA cards (you find the link on
the left in the yellow area).
I know that this site has already helped quite a few people. I hope that it will
eventually help to promote OS/2 among notebook manufacturers as an existing option
for which they need to provide proper support.
Here is some coverage of IBM's testimony about Microsoft, mentions OS/2 among
other things:

Contrary to some of the rumors out there, the PMfax/FaxWorks for OS/2 products
are still actively sold and supported by Keller Group Inc.
While one of the publishers (FaxWorks Solutions, formerly Global Village) has
ceased operations, but the program developer (Keller Group Inc.) is alive and well.
Keller Group has also obtained the rights to the "FaxWorks OS/2" product
name, and is currently trying to determine how to best use the product names (FaxWorks
OS/2 or PMfax) to minimize the confusion. Keller Group has traditionally done their
direct distribution under their PMfax product name, while Global Village/FaxWorks
Solutions has used the FaxWorks product name. Your comments on this issue are welcome.
Sincerely,
Mark Ahlstrom

We have some updates at the OS/2 Netlabs:
GIMP for OS/2 is available in version 1.02 for several weeks now, the team is
now working on porting the GTK (Gimp ToolKit) to OS/2, this will allow us to compile
the GIMP in a native OS/2 version (using PM instead of XFree86). I will keep you
up to date about the progress.
We are again looking for programmers. As some of you know EAGLE is a layout editor
and autorouter which is available for OS/2 (for free for education use!). Unfortunately
the new versions will not support OS/2 anymore, this is because the toolkit they
use (ZINC) is not available in a native OS/2 version. The authors of ZINC are willing
to let the OS/2 community do the port, if we can port the current version of the
toolkit there is a chance to again get a native OS/2 EAGLE. Let me know if you are
interested in porting ZINC to OS/2 (mail to ktk@netlabs.org).
EAGLE is available at http://www.cadsoft.de,
ZINC is available at http://www.zinc.com.
thanks for your support!

Interface looks the same, only this new rev. adds support for the BJC-4400.
Hi, Folks!
Great news! OS/2 have a new program for editing digital photos and pictures:
Photo Tiger! The author, Michael Moegn, just releases the final version and I, @Macarlo,
registered user of 210 OS/2 programs, downloads the file (PHOTO103.ZIP, 1,145MB)
and I'm just publishing an illustrated report about it in my OS/2 website (http://macarlo.com).
Check it!
WarpCast Moderator's Note: The Photo Tiger program can be downloaded from Hobbes
(http://hobbes.nmsu.edu). Look in the /pub/os2/apps/graphics/imagepro
directory.
The FREE Tool RoboticsMessenger/2 (formerly named Hermes/2) for controlling the
USRobotics Message Modems (all models, mostly sold in Europe) has thanks to Marcus
Specht from buntspecht.de for a homepage for download:
http://www.buntspecht.de/romes
With this tool you can control and set the so called 'selfmode' of these modems,
transfer the received faxes and voice-messages into your computer. You can also
convert, view and print the received faxes.
Latest version is prerelease 060.
Take a look at what I found during a bout of aimless websurfing this morning:
http://www.networking.ibm.com/signup/response.nsf/question4
The text of the above public survey question reads:
"How important to your company is digital video disc (DVD) support on OS/2
Warp Server?"
Looks like this is your chance to tell IBM of what kind of DVD support you'd
like to see under OS/2!
- Smart Windows patch #6.5
- Module replacer V. 0,1
- Swap Monitor V. 0.35
--------------------------------------------------------------
Smart Windows is an OS/2 user interface enhancer with both aesthetical and functional
features.
Here you can find a new patch (42 KB):
ftp://ftp.ghostbbs.ml.org/pub/os2/os2team/alcant/smwp0065.zip
Note:
If you already installed patch #6.4 and are not running an unattended machine with
REIPL=ON in your CONFIG.SYS file, you can avoid to install this patch and wait for
the next one.
This is only SMARTWIN.DLL and corrects:
- Message boxes reporting error messages, appearing during system boot, have
been removed. If an error prevents SMARTWIN.DLL from beeing loaded, a short series
of beeps will warn the user and a message will be written to the file SMARTWIN.LOG
in the root directory of the boot drive. If you want to test it put your computer
clock back one day and then reboot. On system boot you'll hear some sounds from
the PC loudspeaker and shall be able to read the error message from the LOG file.
To re-enable Smart Windows, after the test, reset the machine clock to the correct
date and reboot.
- This doesn't extend the trial time.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Module Replacer V. 0.1 is an OS/2 text mode executable which unlocks running DLL
and EXE files optionally replacing them with a new file and saving a backup copy
of the old file.
It is currently available in the incoming directory of hobbes (16 KB):
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/repmod01.zip
or
ftp://ftp.ghostbbs.ml.org/pub/os2/os2team/alcant/repmod01.zip
---------------------------------------------------------
Swap Monitor is a small REXX application which allows to control the swap file size
at a settable interval, keeping track of the current and the maximum size. It can
record the data in a log file in various mode while displaying them in a nice looking
and colorful OS/2 text mode window.
It is currently available in the incoming directory of hobbes (10 KB):
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/swpm035.zip
or
ftp://ftp.ghostbbs.ml.org/pub/os2/os2team/alcant/swpm035.zip
