Sean Reilly, author of highly acclaimed Moneydance multiplatform personal finance
manager, will present his latest release.
Moneydance records all checking, savings and credit card account activity, as
well as breaking down expenses and incomes into summed categories. It also supports
double-entry bookkeeping, split transactions, multiple accounts and currencies,
and more.
Moneydance is written in Sun's Java programming language so it will run on virtually
any platform. Moneydance is a new product (currently in beta), but very usable for
most personal finances.
Additional features currently in development include: scheduled transactions
(in 2-4 weeks); on-line banking (6 months); more thorough and intuitive investment
tracking (4-6 months).
An 11th OS/2 Birthday and Holiday Party will also be held at the December meeting.
Software and other items will be raffled, plus the customary 50/50 raffle, cake,
ice cream and soft drinks.
Other agenda items include a shortened Q&A session, fall Comdex report, OS/2
news and new product announcements and SIG business matters. An OS/2 system will
be on hand for demos of OS/2, Java, Internet, etc., as time may permit.
Mark the date and time: Wednesday, December 18, at 7:00pm. If you want to hear
about all the new and exciting developments, or have questions about OS/2 Warp and
Java, this is the place to see OS/2 in action and get all the answers to your questions.

The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) will be next
Saturday, Dec. 19, at 9:00 AM PST, at the IBM offices located in Plaza Tower, 600
Anton Blvd., Costa Mesa, on the 2nd floor.
Special Potpourri in December!
This is an exciting month for a number of reasons; the meeting topics were member-requested
and the raffle will be extra special.
For starters, newly-elected Yorba Linda Water District Director and SCOUG Program
Chair, Mark Abramowitz, will demonstrate the unique election returns application
he developed (with a "little" help) using Sundial Systems' Mesa 2 spreadsheet
and F/X Communications' dialer InJoy. He'll show how and why it works, and the innovative
features in the applications that allowed him to easily track election returns.
Next, SCOUG member Lynn Maxson will reprise his Warpstock presentation titled
"Call to Action" (you can read his presentation materials at http://www.warpstock.org/98/presentations/Maxson/Present.html).
It is controversial, and there will be opportunity for some vigorous discussion.
Then we'll have a very special raffle with a number of applications and some
perfectly good hardware and software that our members have donated. Last year we
had a treasure-trove of donated items, and virtually everyone left with something
nice. Let's do it again this year! (More details below)
Along with all that, we'll have some Q&A, and then:
General Interest Group - will look at several programs to create multiple desktops.
With OS/2 you can have many programs open at the same time, but that can look messy
and confusing. Having several desktops and switching between them is one solution.
Programming SIG - will resume working on their FTP server project by studying
the Java classes for using TCP/IP sockets. The current source code is available
at http://www.scoug.com/progsig/ftp.html
for your review.
Networking SIG special session - will follow-up on last month's meeting presentation,
answering your questions about peer networking.
Just a reminder - the Internet SIG isn't holding a physical meeting this month.
Contact Dave Watson at dave@scoug.com for details
on the "virtual" Internet SIG meetings (via IRC).
Got goodies? Need to clean out some of that good (but not used) stuff you have
cluttering things up? It's that time of year when we tend to accumulate even more
- but here's a chance to clear out some things you don't need any longer and help
someone else at the same time. If you have an item (probably computer-related <g>)
that's still got a useful life (but not with you), contribute it to the Dec. meeting
raffle.
When, where, and how to get there: SCOUG will be meeting on Saturday, December
19, at 9:00 AM (PST) at the IBM offices located in Plaza Tower, 600 Anton Bl., Costa
Mesa, CA, on the 2nd floor. From I-405, exit onto Bristol northbound (one exit NW
of the I-405/Hwy 55 interchange). Turn right on Anton Blvd (the first signal north
of I-405). Go east 2 signals and turn right (you will see a TGI Fridays' on your
right).
Parking in December:
Finding free parking near South Coast Plaza the weekend before Christmas is always
a challenge.
We suggest you use the parking structure behind TGI Fridays'. Someone may be
on duty there when you pull in - if they ask, say you are going to a meeting at
Plaza Tower (the building IBM is in). They should then allow you to park on the
lower levels of the parking structure. We expect that there will not be a charge
to exit the parking structure when you leave after the SCOUG meeting; however, bring
change along in case Murphy's Law strikes <g>.
Further information (including driving directions) can be found on the SCOUG
web page at http://www.scoug.com. The driving
directions also include maps for the general meeting that you can print off as needed.
We hope to see you there!
If you are going to be in the Atlanta area this coming Tuesday, please plan on
attending the Atlanta OS/2 User's Group Meeting this coming Tuesday at 7pm.
Inside the OS/2 INI Files:
We are delving deep into the OS/2 INI files. Bring your miner's helmet, and a
pick-axe!
Please go to our web site for directions.

This is a reminder that the TO/2 User Group meeting will be on Thursday 10th,
December.
The Topic for the December meeting will GAMING on OS/2.
There will be demonstrations of some OS/2 games and a raffle for a copy of Entrepreneur
1.5 from StarDock.
All are welcome to attend and attendance is free.
The meeting will be at:
The IBM Canada Ltd. Building
3600 Steeles Ave. E.
in the Auditorium
As usual the meeting will begin at 7:00PM.

Peeking at Aurora
IBM's Steven King at Phoenix OS/2 Society
December 8, 7:00pm
by Esther Schindler
As you surely know by now, IBM is readying a new version of OS/2 Warp Server.
Although they've announced that the "real" name will be OS/2 Warp Server
for e-Business, that's quite a mouthful; in conversation, everyone seems to stick
to the company's code name, "Aurora." We're tempted to call it The Operating
System Formerly Known as Aurora.
Whatever its name, we'll be delighted to get a preview of the software at the
Phoenix OS/2 Society's general meeting. On Tuesday, December 8, our special guest
will be the IBM Network Computing Software Division (NCSD)'s NCOS Services Manager,
Steven King.
No, not *that* Steven King. This one has been around OS/2 since its earliest
days, and really cares about the OS -- and particularly about server issues. I've
publicly given a pound of dark Lindt chocolate to this Steven King, and I don't
do such things lightly.
Steven's enthusiasm for OS/2 and OS/2 Warp Server is infectious, and he's a techie's
techie. You really can't miss this meeting!
Aurora is scheduled to ship in Q1 1999, or maybe it's Q2. Steven will bring us
up to speed on the progress of the beta, and explain the enhancements in this new
version.
So what's in Aurora?
Dick Krueger gave his initial impressions of Aurora in an earlier issue of extended
attributes (October, 1998), but here are a few of its promised features to bring
you up to speed.
To make OS/2 Warp Server even more robust and eliminate lengthy file system recovery
times after a system crash with a current file systems, Aurora includes a Journaled
File System (JFS). Using database journaling techniques, JFS can restore a file
system to a functional state in a matter of seconds or minutes. In contrast to a
non-journaling file systems, Aurora's JFS provides a quickly-restartable, transaction-oriented,
log-based, scaleable file system. JFS is key to improving server availability.
The performance and reliability that JFS provides makes Aurora ideal for Web
serving. Furthermore, JFS raises the previous file size limitation of 2 GB to 2
terabytes. Partition size is raised from 64 GB to 2 terabytes allowing a file to
be the same size as a partition.
Aurora is also enabled to work with Vinca Co-Standby Server, an IBM Business
Partner solution that provides safeguards for companies that cannot tolerate down
time. Vinca uses a server-mirroring technique which defines clustered resources
on two nearly identical systems, creating high availability for both servers. The
backup server takes control if the primary system experiences a hardware failure.
With Network File System (NFS), included with Aurora, a RISC (AIX/UNIX) drive
can be mounted and made a sharable resource to OS/2 Warp Server's clients.
Aurora's remote connection services give users full, secure access to the LAN
from home or on the road, using the integrated Virtual Private Network function
of the TCP/IP stack and its PPP server function.Aurora includes Year 2000 and euro
currency readiness.
The Logical Volume Manager (LVM) in Aurora will make it easier to to manage dynamic
DASD requirements. Many terabytes of data are added to the Internet every month.
This growing volume of files and databases requires expandable system DASD. Logical
drives can now span multiple physical hard drives. With permanent or sticky drive
letter assignments, hard drives can be moved or added without changing their drive
letter designation. Partitions can grow without reformatting.
One of the ways in which technology causes change is by constantly providing
the means for engineers to create new devices. These devices are good for business
-- they make things run faster, better, and easier. The difficulty is in integrating
this growing spectrum into the corporate network. Aurora helps to simplify this
with support of the Intelligent Input/Output Architecture Specification (I2O).
Aurora supports the Light Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), a standards-based
Internet directory protocol, and offers IBM's OS/2 LDAP Client Toolkit for C and
Java Version 1.0 for C and Java programmers who want to enable new or existing applications
to access, search, and update LDAP servers, using LDAP V2 or LDAP V3 protocols.
OS/2 LDAP Java/C Toolkit supplies the libraries, files, documentation, and samples
needed to develop C or Java directory-enabled applications that can access a variety
of LDAP-based directory servers.
There's plenty more, of course. But you'll need to show up at the meeting to
see it in action!
When and where
The meeting is held on Tuesday, December 8, at the Mountain Preserve Reception
Center, 1431 East Dunlap. You can find a map to the meeting site at http://www.possi.org.
A random access Q&A session begins at 6:30pm, and the general meeting gets underway
at 7:00pm.
Non-members are welcome to attend general meetings... though we try to make the
evening so enjoyable that you'll feel compelled to join the Society! (Besides, we
tell good jokes. If this isn't fun, after all, why should we bother?)
The Phoenix OS/2 Society is the world's largest OS/2 user group, with members
in 46 U.S. States and 12 countries. It's the publisher of the print magazine, _extended
attributes_, the magazine of the OS/2 community, which includes technical tips,
product reviews, industry analysis and even an occasional cartoon. You can request
a sample issue at the user group's Web site, http://www.possi.org.
The OS/2 CORNER is a SIG that meets on the 2nd Sat of month. We're located north
of LA and south of Santa Barbara, CA -- sometimes known as the California Gold Coast.
See http://www.vcnet.com/os2-corner
for more info.
Thank you for the "air" time.
Sincerly yours, Steve and Len

*** NOVEMBER FEATURE PRESENTATION ***
-- Speech-Aware Computerized Maintenance Management --
Dr. John Urbaniak, President of Aviar Inc. will present Aviar's new speech-aware
CMMS, "Oz of Prevention," for OS/2 and WSOD. Aviar pioneered speech-aware
natural language DB2 query technology with its "V Trex" product which
uses Warp 4 VoiceType Dictation. This was demonstrated by Dr Urbaniak at our August
1997 meeting.
There are over 200 CMMS products on the market, none of them native OS/2, until
now; and none speech-aware, until now.
Oz was presented at Warpstock '98 last month in Chicago, where it received rave
reviews by attendees. Several Warpstock attendees have already requested and installed
Oz, and are now running it. The Editor-in-Chief of "Maintenance Technology
Magazine" visited Aviar at Warpstock, and was so impressed by Oz that he decided
to feature the system in an upcoming issue of the magazine.
If your company maintains equipment, parts inventories, etc., or wishes to reduce
maintenance cost, you should attend this meeting. But even if you don't currently
have need for a CMMS, come see an example of a fully-integrated, speech-aware OS/2
application.
Other agenda items include a Q&A session, OS/2 news & new product announcements,
SIG business matters, software raffle (subject to availability, etc. An OS/2 system
will also be on hand for demos of OS/2, Java, Internet, etc., as time may permit.
Our customary free light refreshments will also be available.
Mark the date and time: Wednesday, November 18, at 7:00pm. If you want to hear
