PillarSoft Suite Holiday Special

22 December 2001

PillarSoft is offering a Holiday Special on the PillarSoft Suite. Perhaps now is the time to own this collection of 13 native OS/2 (and eCS) applications and utilities for just $99.

PILLARSOFT SUITE OVERVIEW

The PillarSoft Suite is a great collection of software and utilities specifically for the OS/2 family of operating systems. The suite will make you more productive immediately with a great archiver, two editors, a secure deletion program, paint program, an easy to use desktop backup program and much more.

There are 13 products available as part of the PillarSoft Suite.

Data Shield - Secure data deletion
DeskTop Backup - Point and click DeskTop Backups
Enhanced E Editors - A pair of productivity editors
Huey - Color selection utility
Killer - "Mini" process killer
PCT - Code Template Tool (extensible)
PSC - Status Center (a plethora of information)
Pocket Password Protector - Keep password listings (encrypted) SFX
Installer - Build custom installations
ShowTime/2 - Background changer and slideshow viewer
VP - Small but cute Video Player
WarPaint - A "pixel paint" program for OS/2
WarpZip - Great archiving tool for OS/2

Some of these applications were not originally part of the suite and are not available separately. They have been bundled to bring added value to the Suite and are available to the previous purchasers of the suite at no additional cost.

Realizing that not everyone will want or need every application in the suite, it is priced it in such a way that if even half of the programs are desirable, the suite should be worth it's price. Separately the programs would weigh in at approximately 260 USD. We hope you will give it a try and decide if the programs fit your needs.

BONUS APPLICATION

If you have children and are a registered user of the Suite, try the KidStreet download at the PillarSoft website also. KidStreet is not part of the PillarSoft Suite but it does recognize registered users of the Suite and is available for use.

MORE INFORMATION

More information, downloads and online purchase can be found at: http://www.pillarsoft.net/suite.html (Be sure to access the correct link to get the special pricing)

Note: Data Shield and the Pocket PassWord Protector are not shareware and are only available with the registered version of the PillarSoft Suite. They will not work as demo's. They are included in the archive so they will be available immediately to newly registered users. The remainder of the applications may be tested and used in the same way any shareware application is used.

Cwaudio classes 0.1.0 released

Chris Wohlgemuth has released the cwaudio classes 0.1.0

These classes are for seemless integration of the MMIO procedures for MP3 and OGG files written by Russel O'Connor http://www.math.berkeley.edu/~roconnor/

After installation Ogg- and MP3 files are treated the same way by the WPS as the other audio files. They have their own Icons and the same menus as for example wave files. A doubleclick starts playback another one stops it. The convert menu item helps you decoding the file to wave without any other program. There's also a new open-item for volume.

The settings notebook of every audio file gets a new page added describing the audio characteristics like playtime or samplerate and you may view and change the ID3 tags of MP3 files using the settings notebook.

Articles needed

If anyone has some time over the holidays and wants to do something to help the OS/2 community, a great way would be to write an article for the VOICE Newsletter or OS/2 eZine. You don't have to be a professional writer to do this. You just need a story to tell.

Do you have some new hardware or a new software application that you would like to let others know works under OS/2 or eComStation? A How-To article is easy to write, just keep a record of everything you did to get something working. Review articles can help generate interest in a particular piece of software or let people know what hardware works with OS/2.

For more on writing an article for VOICE please see our Submission Guidelines at http://www.os2voice.org/newsletter_submission.html We currently accept articles written in English or German. Please send any article ideas to editor@os2voice.org

For more on writing articles for OS/2 eZine please see The OS/2eZine Press Room http://www.os2ezine.com/pressroom.html Please send any article ideas to editor@aurora-systems.com

New Opera beta now available

We just made Opera for OS/2 Beta 2 available for download on http://www.opera.com/os2/
-- Vennlig hilsen/ Sincerely Pal A. Hvistendahl Communications Director Opera Software ASA

[Moderator note: This is version 5.12 Beta 2 and is a self executing WarpIn (WPI) package. Install identifies it as Build 24, the same name as the file that was on Netlabs FTP site briefly a few days ago, though the file size is slightly different.

From the installation:
"INSTALLATION ------------

Starting with beta 2, Opera for OS/2 doesn't need the Odin runtime to be executed. All necessary files are packaged inside the main distribution, except for WarpIN.

If you have Odin installed, it will not conflict with Opera installation and will not be used by Opera.

The WPI archive has been created with WarpIn 0.9.14. If you have installed an older version of WarpIN you must upgrade it. WarpIN is a very easy to use installer/uninstaller for OS/2. Get it at http://www.xworkplace.org or http://warpin.netlabs.org. You just have to download the latest self-extracting archive and run it.

Afterwards you can simply run the self-extracting Opera for OS/2 distribution and WarpIN will start the installation.

If you are installing on the top of a previous installation, the opera.ini file will not be updated with new settings. This could lead to non-functional features available in this beta. Rename your opera.ini before going on, if you want to enable new features."

and

"FUNCTIONS
---------
New features:
- Printing
- Java 1.3
- OS/2 look&feel
- OS/2 drag&drop
- Instant messaging.

This release is missing:
- Opera Mail."

And finally, please don't send problem reports to me. For where to report problems and ask questions:

"BUG REPORTING & QUESTIONS
-------------------------

If you discover a bug you should first check bugs.txt. If you are 100% sure that the bug is not yet listed you can post it to the Opera for OS/2 Newsgroup:

Newsserver: news.opera.no
Group: opera.os2

We need the following information for each bug report:
- Odin version you use (exact date)
- OS/2 Version
- Opera for OS/2 version"]

The source, which is available free thru netlib, has been compiled on everything from laptops to CRAYs."

Linotype vs. OS/2 Site

There's an interesting article in The Register today about the German company Linotype Library GmbH going after websites that are allegedly improperly distributing some of their copyrighted fonts. The article specifically mentions the OS/2 Site (http://www.os2site.com/) run by Ian Manners, who brought the situation to the attention of The Register. The article can be found at http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/23427.html
