I'm pleased to announce that at the OS2IRC Organization (A soon to be
chartered non-profit organization) we have undertaken a project to ensure
the survival of Hobbes.
Much effort has already been undertaken to begin building a new dedicated
server. We are still in need of some parts and software.
More on this can be found at our website www.os2irc.org(our domain is
temp. down) http://69.11.138.157:5005/newserver.html &

OpenTTD, an open source game in the style of "Transport Tycoon Deluxe",
has just released version 0.3.6, which includes a port for OS/2 (using
SDL). There are many bug fixes and new features, in particular related to
multiplayer. There are also a few OS/2 specific bugfixes: see the full
changelog at SourceForge.
For more information on OpenTTD, see www.openttd.com. To download the
latest version, see http://sourceforge.net/projects/openttd/. [Moderator
note: Took me a little bit to find it as only the windoze, MAC and Linux
versions are mentioned on the home page, but if you click on the openttd
link under "Package" on this page it will take you to a file download list
which has an OS/2 release - openttd-0.3.6-os2.zip .]
If you have any problems with the OS/2 port, contact Owen Rudge

This could affect all of us who use older "orphaned" software. Please
read the full rules and consider sending some email on this. See the full
text of the proposal at the link.
SUMMARY:
The Copyright Office seeks to examine the issues raised by orphan works"
i.e., copyrighted works whose owners are difficult or even impossible to
locate. Concerns have been raised that the uncertainty surrounding
ownership of such works might needlessly discourage subsequent creators
and users from incorporating such works in new creative efforts or making
such works available to the public. This notice requests written comments
from all interested parties. Specifically, the Office is seeking comments
on whether there are compelling concerns raised by orphan works that merit
a legislative, regulatory or other solution, and what type of solution
could effectively address these concerns without conflicting with the
legitimate interests of authors and right holders. ....
1. If by electronic mail: Send to orphanworks@loc.gov a message containing
the name of the person making the submission, his or her title and
organization (if the submission is on behalf of an organization), mailing
address, telephone number, telefax number (if any) and e-mail address. The
message should also identify the document clearly as either a comment or
reply comment. The document itself must be sent as a MIME attachment, and
must be in a single file in either: (1) Adobe Portable Document File (PDF)
format (preferred); (2) Microsoft Word 2000 or earlier; (3) WordPerfect
8.0 or earlier; (4) Rich Text File (RTF) format; or (5) ASCII text file

[Moderator note: Sending replies to the VOICE feedback address will
accomplish nothing. Please post any followups to the Usenet group
comp.os.os2.misc. If you don't know how to post to Usenet its time to
learn how. If you don't like Usenet get over it and post something useful
there like how you feel about supporting OS/2 projects.
I'm personally sick of seeing all these stupid trolls ruining the
comp.os.os2 groups with nothing but lies and FUD and am very happy to see
some real OS/2-eCS users accomplishing something in these groups of late.
The following was posted by David Rocks, maintainer of the hobbes FTP
site.]
My tenure at new Mexico State University is fast coming to an end.
Although I have a commitment from the Unix manager here to continue
supporting hobbes(he uses it to train student employees in standard
server support processes) there is pressure to eliminate hobbes that will
escalate when I leave, and of course, I might not be the only one leaving.
Hobbes has received little external support over its 2 decades of
existence at NMSU(where will OS/2 be in 2010? 2020?). I've 'detained'
boxes on their way out to surplus (some may remember the 1st hobbes at
NMSU was a Next system) and 'borrowed' student employee hours to support
it. The total of external donations over 20 years is less than $200.
Since hobbes, to most computers, is really hobbes.nmsu.edu, it really
isn't practical to 'transfer' it to another location. The plan was to
give lots of notice before it died so that someone could copy all the
files to another server or servers, one of which would probably become the
future favorite OS/2 site, or at least, most well known.
Looking at the success of the OS/2 tinderbox funding model, do you think
that the Amazon Honor system would be a good model to fund a longer life
for hobbes? I think the university would look more kindly on hobbes if
there were some revenue, and student labor is cheap. And the training
value is recognised by more than a few. A few thousand a year would go a
long way toward preserving hobbes at its current well known address, and
maybe even upgrade it( it is currently running on an old RS/6000 550 with
little space or memory and a tenency to fail). And, even though retired,
any continued input from me would receive more attention if money was on
the table.
The university has a big network pipe(100 mb), even if heavily used,
with redundant backbones. So moving it to another ISP would not only lose
its well known address but possibly provide poorer access.
PLEASE, restrict response to the question. Hobbes has gotten all the
praise and complaint it will ever need, and you know how testy old guys
can get.

Mike getting enough money for a build machine was the easy part. He has
plenty now.
The hard part is picking out a machine to buy, or picking out components
with which to build one. Mike's thing is programming, not hardware. IBM
isn't going to give him an OS/2 certified or any other machine. So, if we
want to see this project bear fruit in a reasonable time, the hardware
wise among us should collaborate to help Mike with this task. Besides
here, any of
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/os2hardware
news:netscape.public.mozilla.os2 or
irc://moznet/warpzilla
are probably good places to provide input.

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR
protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and
a variety of other clients).
It has been updated with the following changes:
* Added the ability to send and receive typing notifications. Now you
have the option to notify your buddies when you are actively typing
in an IM window, and any typing notifications sent by your buddies
will be indicated with a pen or paper icon in your buddy list window.
The pen indicates that they are actively typing. The paper indicates
that they have some text typed, but are not currently typing. * Added
the ability to display user-defined status messages. Some
clients seem to use this field for their user profile.
* Changed the filter icons to make their meaning more clear when the
filters are turned on. Also added flyover help for them.
* Prevented the user from adding the same screen name to the buddy list
more than once.
* Fixed to accept buddy lists that are split into multiple parts by
the AOL server. If you were missing buddy list entries before, this
should not be the case anymore.
* Fixed the case where an AOL error message causes Mr. Message to stop
acknowledging messages from the AIM server for the rest of the session.
* Fixed the replacement of " & < and > at the end of a
profile or away message.
* Fixed the profile/away message selection window to select the entry
that was just added or modified.
* Fixed loading of buddy list icons multiple times.
* Fixed debug error messages resulting from a user logging off.
You can download it here:

or with the full source code here:

Clipview 2.9 is released and is on Hobbes
New features bug fixes etc:
Added -w wrap option.
Added -s "Skip intial load from clipboard" option.
Added action to clear unlocked clips.
Fixed bug whereby F1 would cause a crash.
Fixed bug - Catch if external edit of clip in prgress & ClipView closed.
Added check to catch delete of bottom clip if locked.
Added removal of the > symbol when clip capture off and a clip hits the
clipboard.
Changed "Deleting the last clip leaves all locked" to
say clip instead of buffer.
Menu items CUA compliant.
Added RMB support for locked clips.
Fixed clip selection problem caused by setting a clip to append
when another clip was already in append state.
Fixed bug in resizing if "Tile" or "Cascade" used from Windowlist.
Stopped title bar going off top of screen when adding clip.
N.B. ClipView 2.5 & above uses a changed .ClipSave format.
It is NOT backwards compatible.
Upgrading from earlier versions should not present any problems.
I don't know about you, but I always seem to want to paste what I clipped
three operations back :-) So I wrote ClipView, based on the Unix program
cutview.
The Clipview suite of programs consists of:
ClipView v2.9 - Gives multiple text clipboards. Clips may be printed,
edited, saved to a buffer and locked. Optionally the entire set of clips
and their state can be saved across invocations of ClipView.
ClipPrint v1.2 - Prints the current text contents of the clipboard.
PipeClip v2.3 - Used on the command line to pipe output to the clipboard.
eg dir /w | pipeclip
ClipPipe v1.0 - Used on the command line to pipe input from the
clipboard.
eg clippipe | someprogram
ClipWait v1.0 - Used in scripts to wait until something gets written to
the clipboard.
CV_Client_OS2 1.1 } These are *alpha* code.
} They allow clipboards to communicate
CV_Server_OS2 1.1 } across machines. Eventually I hope to add other OSes.

All,
A little background first: The WarpZilla team needs to purchase a
computer to support continued development of the OS/2 - eCS versions of
Mozilla, Firebird, Thunderbird and the various other items associated with
Mozilla.org. The primary reason for the need to purchase this system is
so the team has the ability to continue professional development and
testing on its own without support from IBM. A tinderbox/nightly system
will provide nightly builds for testing. As the source code for these
programs is rather large a very fast system is needed in order to complete
compiles in reasonable times.
Last Firday Mike Kaply posted the URL to a donations account he set up at
Amazon.com. Amazingly after only about 36 hours the account maxed out and
started rejecting contributions. Mike wasn't aware that Amazon has
monthly limits on how much can be contributed. He has now set up another
account at Amazon so that contributions can continue:
http://www.amazon.com/paypage/P2JXB7S1QN392Y
I have contributed and feel it is money well spent. I enjoy using the
OS/2 - eCS versions of the products from the WarpZilla team and would like
to not only see their efforts continue but get better. Amazon.com takes
contributions of as little as $1 USD so please contribute if you can.

The MR/2 ICE Internet Email/News Client v2.67 has been released.
Available here:
http://mr2ice.secant.com/nick/mr2i267.zip
The MR/2 ICE home page:
http://www.mr2ice.com/
Changes in v2.67 (since v2.60b):
o Template processing - $IF logic error would end up skipping all lines
until EOF if it was actually false.
o Folder rebuild changes - minor; some diagnostic logic added in an
attempt to catch an obscure, "only on some systems" issue.
o Better logic to handle corrupt or invalid news status files.
o Additional diagnostics added in news indexing routines.
Changes in v2.65
----------------
o HELP file expanded significantly. Still plenty to do, but a vast
improvement over previous content. Context sensitive help isn't
triggering; no dialog boxes invoke help. I'll figure out why quickly.
Changes in v2.62
----------------
o Modified HELP menu to add ways to register.
o Added some text to the HELP system.
o Settings->Prompts now has a way to turn OFF the new version
notifications.
o There is now a mechanism to try and relieve the 31 day nag if MR/2 has
been used a minimal of times. I hate retrying shareware a couple of weeks
later, after giving up on it the first day due to time constraints ...
only to find my chance has expired already! That's a non-sale for what
might have been a decent package, and results in a waste of my time. This
should help reduce these types of issues with MR/2.
o More web site cleanup centering on registration options.
o URL editor would crash on some long URL's. Fixed.
Changes in v2.61
----------------
o Some work towards allowing READ ONLY folders, for transporting
archived folders to CD or DVD media. Not complete, but I'm working on it!
o More cleanup of support docs and web pages.

There had been a really long while since I had update my first OS/2 site.
So, today I took some time to update the site.
Visit:
http://www.os2world.com/emulator/
I had fix some dead links and I had also included two new categories:
# Java Emulators working under OS/2-eCS.
# Windows 32 Emulators working with Odin under OS/2-eCS.
The categories still alittle bit empty, but they are going to keep growing
with time.
If you have know any other a Win32 Emulator that runs under OS/2 let me
know !!
