Universal Anti-Virus Rescue Kit for OS/2 (!) etc.

From: http://www.infosecnews.com/sgold/news/2002/03/18_04.htm

Central Command Releases Universal Anti-Virus Rescue Kit Central Command has launched its Vexira Antivirus Rescue Disk System, which it claims is the industry's first universal anti-virus rescue technology for Windows, Linux, UNIX, DOS and OS/2 systems.

Multi-platform CD-ROMs and disks with anti-virus software for different platforms are nothing new - the first 3.5 inch floppies supporting Windows PCs and Apple Macs first appearing in the late 1980s - but Central Command claims its product is the first to span all five operating system platforms. The system, the Ohio-based company says, will scan and remove more than 64,000 viruses, trojans and other malware from the relevant platforms using a single CD-ROM or a four-floppy disk set.

Specifically, Central Command says the package will work with the following file systems: Microsoft FAT 16, FAT 32, VFAT, NTFS, Linux ext2, ReiserFS and UMSDOS, IBM OS/2 HPFS, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris and UNIX UFS, CD-ROM ISO9660, Minix, FreeVxFS, Veritas VxFS, System V, Xenix, V7 and UDF.

Steve Sundermeier, the company's product manager, told Infosecurity News that the rescue kit was available free of charge from the company's web site and users are encouraged to visit the web site to download a trial of a fully-functional anti-virus application for their machines.

New URL for the Notebook/2 site

The Notebook/2 Site has moved: it is now hosted by the OS2World.Com site. You can access it under http://www.os2world.com/DrMartinus/notebook.htm

Since I could no longer access the FTP server at the OS/2 Supersite, this move has become necessary. The site will soon be updated, and I hope to give it a complete new design in the near future.

Those who have linked to the Notebook/2 site at the OS/2 Supesite, should change their link accordingly.

Thanks,

Dr. Martinus

Data Representations to Exhibit at Java One April 24 - 29

Come see the latest Simplicity RAD tools, at JavaOne in the Data Representations booth, #1606. We will be demonstrating all of our tools to meet your needs.

If your programming combines J2ME and J2EE your dreams will come true when you see Simplicity for Mobile Servers. Simplicity for Mobile Servers consists of special versions of Simplicity Enterprise and Simplicity for Mobile Devices allowing them to build both the front and back ends of a program simultainously.

This visual, component-based, rapid applications development environment comes with a built-in development server leaving your mission critical server free from development chores. Developers can add functionality to their servlets including working with JDBC/ODBC databases, XML documents, selecting form data, and interacting with Enterprise JavaBean TechnologyÖ. Its open API lets a developer create their own components for adding custom functionality to servlets.

Component modules such as Form, DataBase, Table, EJB, and XML Export are selected from a tool palette and then dragged and dropped onto the composer in a logical order. Next the developer highlights what properties of a component to export and instantly generates and exports XML formatted code.

It's that simple!

However, creating a dynamic servlet and exporting XML data is only the beginning. The next tool is an enhanced version of Simplicity for Mobile Devices for creating midlets in MIDP for PDA’s, phones and pagers. For communication purposes it includes the Simplicity XML Transaction Caching Engine. The XML Transaction Caching Engine eliminates the need to write a custom parser that accepts and sends XML data communication between a server and handset. It automates the transfer of data between the server and mobile device. First it parses XML data and maps it to the integrated MIDP application. Then it caches requests and responses to the server in the handset if the server isn't available. All the while it offers features that automate the development of the midlet. Features such as “execution on the flyö and “Code Sourcererö make designing a breeze.

Come see us and we will be happy to demonstrate how you can use these and our other RAD tools.

Opera 5.2 beta 2 for OS/2 and ECS - build 28 is available for download

A new release of the Opera for OS/2 Beta is available for download from

http://www.opera.com/os2

The main Opera OS/2 page still lists the available version as "5.12 Beta 2", but the Download page lists it as "5.12 Beta 3"

http://www.opera.com/download/get.pl?platform=OS/2&force=5.12

The Readme.txt lists it as Opera 5.2 beta 2 for OS/2 and ECS - build 28. Also in the Readme is a list of the following new features:

- Printing
- Java 1.3
- OS/2 look&feel
- OS/2 drag&drop
- Instant messaging.

And it states that this release is missing:
- Opera Mail.

This is a self-executing WarpIn archive. Odin is not required to install this as a version is included, but WarpIn 0.9.16 (Available from http://warpin.netlabs.org must be installed prior to running the self-installing file.

According to the Readme.txt you still can't register it yet, but that is worked on for the "near future".

Those fun guys at /. declare OS/2 dead yet again.

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/03/17/2131216&mode=nested&tid=136

The article begins: "IBM's first 32-bit version of its advanced PC operating system was released 10 years ago this month. It was better than anything around, yet it failed. Its hopes were pinned on many of the same things we hope today will bring Linux to the forefront. What lessons are to be learned? Will we learn them? A glimpse of a sorry chapter in computing history."
