OS/2 SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP
PHILADELPHIA AREA COMPUTER SOCIETY
http://www.phillyos2.org
The OS/2 SIG of the Philadelphia Area Computer Society invites all interested computer users to attend the August meeting:
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23, 2000 7:00 - 10:00 PM
The Episcopal Academy, 376 N. Latches Lane, Merion, PA
*** AUGUST FEATURE PRESENTATION ***
-- EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT INTERNET SECURITY --
At the August 23rd meeting, SIG member David Moskowitz will cover "Everything You've Ever Wanted To Know About Internet Security"
OK, not quite everything, but at least a good start :-)
David will talk about the risks and hazards of surfing the net and what you can do to protect yourself. It doesn't make any difference whether you're on a dial-up connection or broadband (DSL or cable modem), you have a potential security risk.
* Do you know how to find out if your system is at risk?
* Do you know how to protect yourself?
* Do you know what a firewall is and what it does?
* Do you know how to respond to a security breach?
If you don't know the answers to these and other questions, you should be at this meeting on Wednesday, August 23, 2000.
Other agenda items include SIG business matters, Warpstock 2000, OS/2 news, new software releases, Q&A session, and raffles. An OS/2 system will be on hand for demos of OS/2, Java, Internet, etc. as time permits. Free light refreshments will be available.
Mark the date and time: Wednesday, August 23rd, at 7:00pm, to hear about all the new and exciting developments, or if you have questions about OS/2 Warp and Java. OS/2 SIG meetings are open and free for OS/2 users, their guests and all others interested in learning about OS/2 and associated Java technology.

The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) will be next Saturday, August 19, 2000 at 9:00 AM PDT, at Eastside Christian Schools (Heritage Campus) in Anaheim.
Simplicity for Java
With Simplicity for Java, even non-programmers can program, and do so quickly! For those many programmers among our members, Simplicity will allow you to code in Java in days all those tasks that might otherwise take weeks.
To see this unbelievable application (and maybe even buy some copies!), come watch Kevin Peterson from Data Representations show off their flagship product at the August SCOUG meeting. Can't stand the suspense? Download a tryout version today at Data Representations' web site:

After that, we'll have Q&A, a raffle, and then...
"Picnic SIG" - This month, in place of our Programming SIG and General Interest/Internet SIG, we will be having a Picnic SIG. SCOUG will provide all the fixin's. During our picnic lunch we can discuss the future of OS/2, continue the Q&A session, discuss FixPak 14 installation results, speculate what impact Serenity Systems' (http://www.serenity-systems.com) eComStation product will have on the OS/2 market, pontificate on how the Internet has changed our lives, discuss the Programming SIG's project and many other topics.
Help Desk chats now happen on Wednesday evenings at 7 PM PDT. If you've got a problem with hardware or software, join the chat and ask for help. For further info, go to:

Monday, August 21, 7 PM PDT meetings:
OS/2 Help Desk: Got problems with your system? Volunteers at the OS/2 Help Desk will help you solve them. Bring your system and all related hardware and software, along with a detailed explanation of your problem.
Networking SIG: Will be providing help to members setting up a peer network and connecting their local LAN to the Internet via a cable modem connection, DSL connection, or a dial-up connection via an ISP.
The Sundial SIG is on vacation for another month.
How to get to Eastside Christian Schools (Heritage Campus):
The Eastside Christian School (Heritage Campus) in Anaheim is at 2528 W. La Palma Ave. It is on the south side of the street (about 200 ft. E of Magnolia) on the Grace Baptist Church property. It's a 2-story office building close to La Palma Ave. with the address of 2528 up near the roof. (It's between 2 large apartment complexes and can be easily missed). Look for the SCOUG banner (if you are driving eastbound on La Palma Ave.) and/or a sign with the words "New Hope Christian Center". Turn in (south) there. Park in the front lot. For the general meeting, go up the stairs in the middle of the building along the parking-lot side.
For the Help Desk, go in at the middle on the ground floor and down the hall to your right.
Freeway exits: (subject to change due to freeway construction on I-5 and the 91 freeways):
1) North I-5 (from central/south Orange County): the Brookhurst/La Palma exit has re-opened. Get off at Brookhurst/La Palma and turn left (going west over I-5). The school/church will be on your left side.
2) South I-5 (from Los Angeles): take the Magnolia exit and turn right going south. Turn left on La Palma Ave; the school/church will be on your right side.
3) West 91 freeway (from the Inland Empire, etc): take the Magnolia exit and turn left going south. Turn left on La Palma Ave; the school/church will be on your right side.
4) East 91 freeway: take the transition to I-5 south. Stay to your right and take the Magnolia exit. Turn right going south. Turn left on La Palma Ave; the school/church will be on your right side.

Did you miss the last online chat with members of the Warpstock committee? Don't worry - we're having another one!
The Warpstock Committee is pleased to announce an online chat, sponsored by V.O.I.C.E., on Saturday August 12. The chat will start at 4pm Eastern (20:00 GMT) and will be held on the #voice channel of the WEBBNET IRC network. For more information on accessing the chat, go to:

Warpstock 2000 is only five weeks away so if you have any questions, this is the place to get the answers. Members of the Committee and some of the speakers will be present to talk about Warpstock 2000 and answer any questions about the event and the presentations. So spend an hour this Saturday afternoon with us, and we'll think you'll be convinced that you need to go to Warpstock next month.
The 4th annual Warpstock conference will be held September 9-10, 2000, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is produced by Warpstock, Inc., a North Carolina non-profit corporation. The Warpstock annual conference is a gathering of OS/2 users and vendors from around the world for the purpose of education and advocacy. More information is available at the Warpstock 2000 web site:
