REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group comp.os.os2.ecomstation

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a
world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup comp.os.os2.ecomstation. This is
not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time. Procedural
details are below.

Newsgroup line:
comp.os.os2.ecomstation Serenity Systems operating system eComStation.

RATIONALE: comp.os.os2.ecomstation

The newsgroup 'comp.os.os2.ecomstation' would be a forum for
discussing issues related to the use of the eComStation operating system,
a licensed version of IBM's OS/2 from Serenity Systems Intl.

Currently, the comp.os.os2.* newsgroups are used as a resource for asking
and answering questions regarding all OS/2 versions, including
eComStation. OS/2 is the major operating system upon which eComstation is
based, however eComStation has gained sufficient interest to support its
own newsgroup.

In addition, the general audience for questions regarding eComStation and
Serenity Systems differ from the audience interested in general IBM OS/2
questions. Therefore, it seems appropriate for eComStation to gain its
own newsgroup for eComStation-specific questions.

Appropriate discussion in the group will involve eComStation and other
eComStation-related products (including Serenity Virtual Station.) Some
examples of topics that should be posted to
comp.os.os2.ecomstation:

- General questions regarding the installation and operation of
eComStation
- Questions regarding eComStation specific programming
- Discussion of eComStation related technologies
- Questions regarding application software and hardware support
- eComstation user advocacy and debate

While several unmoderated online fora dedicated to eComStation do exist
and have a large amount of traffic, experience shows that the lack of a
unified forum hampers the development of a decent discussion.

The only other unmoderated newsgroups that offers some room for such
discussions today are in comp.os.os2.*. However, eComStation differs
significantly enough from the base OS/2 that discussions regarding it may
not be relevant at all to the general OS/2 user. Discussions involving
eComStaion have comprised a significant portion of the traffic in the
comp.os.os2 hierarchy to the point where it may be distracting for the
eComStation user and general OS/2 user alike.

The separation of eComStation issues from general comp.os.os2.* topics
will hence avoid user confusion and avoid disagreement on the general
relevance of eComStation in relation to OS/2 which was felt to be
unsatisfactory by all parties.

CHARTER: comp.os.os2.ecomstation

comp.os.os2.ecomstation is an unmoderated newsgroup for discussion of the
eComStation operating system and related technologies.

Posting guidelines:

1) Posts must be related to the discussion of eComStation, which includes
all the modern aspects of operating eComStation as well as related topics,
but excludes general OS/2 topics, unless a direct relevance to eComstation
can be made explicit. Topics which are relivant to the broader audience
of OS/2 users may be better received in the appropriate general category
OS/2 group. Original and interesting criticism of eComStation is welcome.

2) Posts should not be made if they contain personal attacks, incitement
to retribution (i.e. flames and obvious trolling), or general hostility.

Clearly inappropriate postings include:
(1) Personal attacks;
(2) Discussion that isn't about or related to eComStation
(3) Multiple messages that all say the same or very similar
things; and
(4) Overly speculative postings and postings that are "not even
wrong."

3) Posts may include links to websites or personal pages that contain
relevant and on-topic information about eComStation.

4) Posting of binary files is prohibited. Short segments of source code or
quotes from papers may be posted; however, large projects and complete
papers should be archived elsewhere, and a link to the download site
included in the post.

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase of
the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroups should be
raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue for a minimum of
21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this proposal is posted to
news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For Votes (CFV) may be posted
by a neutral vote taker if the discussion warrants it. Please do not
attempt to vote until this happens.

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.

Hi all.

I've just uploaded Pine 4.61 for OS/2 to Hobbes. This is a bug-fix release
from the Uni of Washington, and I've also fixed many of the OS/2-specific
bugs reported in versions 4.58 and 4.60. There may be a couple of quirks
remaining in 4.61 -- please report any problems to me and I will endeavour
to have them fixed for the next release.

I've also compiled the University of Washington's POP3 and IMAP servers
for OS/2 and uploaded them to Hobbes under the name imap461.zip. This is
a beta-quality release, so use it with caution and please report any
problems to me.

July 20, 2004 Innotek has made an XPI available to install Java Plug-In
Support (IPLUGINW.DLL). It does NOT install the Java Plug-in. It is
available here

this XPI removes the requirement to manually delete COMPREG.DAT - you just
need to restart the browser.

e-Zine July Issue will be up shortly, it is 95% ready with just a few
minor touch-ups. Don't worry, we will never disappear without warning!

I apologize (again!) for the slight delay, but I've been travelling
(work-related) most of the past weeks. If this keeps up, we'll have to see
about getting a backup editor...

Thanks VERY MUCH to all the authors and contributors. These past couple of
months have seen more and more articles roll in, and we have plenty of
content. Don't let it stop though! We can always use more.

VTeX/2 is a TeX distribution, which is built around the VTeX program. VTeX
is an implementation of the TeX typesetting engine, including the eTeX
extensions. VTeX can generate PDF or PostScript output immediately from
the TeX source file. The distribution includes Plain TeX, a comprehensive

As a registered user of the Golden Code(R) RTE and SDK for J2SE(TM) 1.4.1
product, please be advised that a new maintenance release based on Sun's
1.4.1_07 codebase began shipping to selected customers on June 26, 2004.
End-user orders will be accepted online beginning approximately August 2,
2004. We apologize to those of you who had been expecting to be able to
order today, based on the information previously posted on our website.

The per-seat license fee for the Golden Code JVM port for both upgrades
and new licenses is US$42.00. Customers requiring more than 10 seats are
requested to contact Golden Code Development directly
(info@goldencode.com) for volume discount information. Although previous
releases of this product were made available at no charge, we are moving
to a fee-based licensing model to give the OS/2 community an opportunity
to fund continued development and support of a native JVM for the OS/2
platform.

The latest release provides the following enhancements over previous
versions:

1. The code is refreshed to the latest Sun fix level of 1.4.1_07.

2. OJI plugin support for both VisualAge C++ and GCC builds of Mozilla.
This includes all versions of Mozilla starting with 1.4 and later. The
prior OJI plugin only supported the VisualAge C++ builds which include
Mozilla 1.4, Mozilla 1.4.1 and the IBM Web Browser 2.02.

3. Support for all versions of Warp v4, including versions with no
fixpack or fixpacks prior to fixpack 13. Prior versions of the JVM only
support FP13 and later. Warp v3 is not supported at this time. This
support can be provided for customers willing to fund the required
development.

4. Support for both the 16-bit and 32-bit TCPIP stacks. This includes the
TCPIP 4.0 (16-bit stack) included in Warp v4 as well as the TCPIP 4.1 and
above (32-bit stacks). Prior versions of the JVM only supported the 32-bit
stacks in TCPIP 4.1 and above.

5. JSound now provides a shared sound implementation. This means that
using Java Sound (in both the plugin as well as regular Java applications)
will no longer take or require exclusive access to the sound device. As
such, the GCD JVM is now a model citizen in regards to sharing the sound
device with other applications. Prior JVM versions provided an exclusive
mode sound implementation that inhibited system sounds and the use of
sound in Java applets or applications with other OS/2 native applications
that required sound.

6. Major DBCS improvements. This includes the addition of a complete
Input Method implementation, support and testing on Simplified Chinese,
Japanese and Korean NLS versions and many DBCS related fixes. The DBCS
implementation is nearly complete (especially in Swing and the base J2SE)
with the exception the AWT where the support in the native controls is not
well tested. Complete testing and support of DBCS including all AWT native
controls can be provided for customers willing to fund the required
development.

7. JVMSTAT and VisualGC tool support. These are "AS IS" tools provided by
Sun to visually inspect a running JVM's internal status, with a special
focus on statistics and heap/garbage collection. These tools can be
invaluable for analyzing an application's interaction with the Java heap.
These are a very powerful set of tools with minimal production/performance
impact. As such they can be used in situations where the other debugging
or profiling interfaces cause too much intrusion into the application to
be useful. These tools are also very easy to use, so they may be of great
value without having to learn a more complicated approach to debugging or
analysis.

8. Support for dynamic thread state dumping. Using a new "AS IS" tool
from GCD (dumpthreads.exe), one can cause a running JVM to generate a
complete thread dump of the state of every thread (native VM threads and
Java threads) to the console. All Java threads will display a complete
stack trace and the JVM does a deadlock analysis. If the JVM finds a
deadlock, additional information is displayed showing the exact threads
that are deadlocked, the resources they are waiting for, the thread and
specific Java method in the stack trace that owns those resources. With
this deadlock analysis, days of debugging can be eliminated as deadlock
problems become much more obvious. In addition, this tool can be used on a
running JVM without any prior preparation (e.g. no additional -X options
to turn on debug). Note that this tool does have limitations as documented
in the readme.

9. Process launching options are now provided on a per-JVM basis. This
includes foreground/background control and control over window visibility
attributes. This is an exclusive feature of the GCD JVM. One now has
complete control over how these attributes are set in child processes.
Different JVMs on the same system can have a different (global) setting.
All child processes launched from the same JVM will inherit the same
launching options.

10. Font pathing and processing improvements. The PM_Fonts application in
the OS2.INI is now used to create the default font paths which Java2D uses
for finding fonts. In addition, new environment variables have been added
to allow the user to override this processing in various ways. Safe
processing has been added to avoid loading OS/2 fonts that the Sun Java2D
font engine cannot handle properly.

11. Printing subsystem improvements. The printing subsystem has been
enhanced in the area of options processing, especially in the case of
non-US locales. Many print options related defects have been resolved.

12. Additional customization and configuration options. Some new options
have been added to the JVM. Examples include an experimental -X option to
set the Java to native thread-priority mappings (not for use in production
environments), an environment variable to allow operation on pre-Pentium
CPUs (not for use in production environments) and a -X option to display
the native stack utilization at JVM exit.

13. Improved documentation. A great deal of information has been added to
the GCD JVM specific readme files. In addition, a much larger selection of
tools documentation is now included with the standard J2SE API JavaDoc.


In addition to these enhancements, many fixes have been made to resolve
the majority of the open issues found by customers or in internal testing
by Golden Code Development.

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR
protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and
a variety of other clients).

It has been updated with the following changes:
* Incorporated Aaron Lawrence's Rich Text Viewer widget for viewing
formatted IMs.
* Added the ability to create aliases for your buddies, so that you
don't have to remember their (sometimes cryptic) screen names.
* Added popup menus on buddies and the buddy list itself.
* Added the ability to refresh one or all profile/away messages.
* Changed bubble window behavior so that it closes or doesn't pop up
when it shouldn't really be there.
* Added the ability for the buddy list window to keep track of changed
presentation parameters (fonts and colors dropped from the various
palettes in "System Setup")
* Fixed to inherit global settings on newly created sessions.
* Fixed replacing an ampersand (&) with a quote in a received IM.
* Fixed an off-by-one error on a username string allocation, causing
intermittent crashes.
