I've created some patches for Samba which enhance its ability to act as a NetBios Name Server and add the ability to act as a NetBios Datagram Distributor.

Without the patches, Samba mirrors how MS WINS servers act - it does not register group names other than type 0x1c properly, and it does not act as an NBDD. Without these features, OS/2 clients cannot logon to domains, OS/2 or NT, if they are using TCPBeui in a routed environment.

The patch, by adding those features, allows OS/2 clients and servers to easily use TCPBeui in a routed TCP/IP network. I have only tested this running Samba on Linux, but I imagine it would work on any platform supported by Samba.

Please see my web page at:

http://www.landy.cx

for the patch and instructions.

SNES9x is an emulator for Nintendo's 16 bit home gaming console, the Super Nintendo. Super Nintendo featured sequels to most of the games that the 8 bit Nintendo made famous, as well as having some new gems of its own. Through the magic of Scitech's Multiplatform Graphics Library (MGL), this gaming experience can now be brought natively to OS/2 users.

Here's what's new and different:
* Updated to work with SDD beta 35 or higher
* SNES Mouse support added

Requirements:
* SDDHELP.SYS from beta 35 or newer (included)
* DART support
* EMX .9d runtime libraries

The EmuOS/2 web page is finally back in full operation with its own domain name again. You can grab the latest versions of SNES9x, Retrocade, and MAME for OS/2 from:

http://emuos2.vintagegaming.com

Please read the included ReadMe.OS2 file thoroughly. Send comments and bug reports to mamedev@stny.rr.com, and look for an update to Retrocade and a release of MGL MAME for OS/2 soon!

IBM has released a new drop of the kernel files for OS/2 Warp Client and WSeB (UNI and SMP).

Dated October 31, 2000 (hence the term "Halloween Kernel"), these versions of the Kernel (and of OS2LDR that matches them) have fixed the problem with OS/2 not recognizing all the RAM in your system using certain BIOS chips.

Previously, if you had this problem, you needed to download and use the OS2LDR patch from Daniella Engert to patch your OS2LDR file.

NOTE: These files will NOT be released in the Convenience Pak or in Fixpak 15. They seem to be a "gift" from Scott Garfinkle. If you've had this problem, or are planning on updating your system, or buying a new system, you might want to get the version of these files that is appropriate for your system, and save them.

FTP to:
ftp://testcase.boulder.ibm.com/ps/fromibm/os2

The files you are looking for are:

smp1031.zip - SMP Kernel for WSeB
smp1031d.zip - SMP Debug Kernel for WSeB
uni1031.zip - UNI Kernel for WSeB
uni1031d.zip - UNI Debug Kernel for WSeB
w41031.zip - Warp 4 (and eCS) Kernel
w41031d.zip - Warp 4 (and eCS) Debug Kernel

Certain BIOS chips on some Athlon and Duron Mainboards use a different method of reporting the amount of SYSTEM RAM installed in a system, and the OS2LDR file wouldn't recognize more than 64Mb of RAM in these systems. Daniella Engert released a patch utility that you would run against your existing OS2LDR file to patch it to allow it to "see" all the RAM. Since the OS2LDR and the OS2KRNL files must match, each time you installed a Fixpak or a new version of the Kernel, you needed to patch your OS2LDR file.

Unless IBM changes the Kernel again before the release of FP15 or the Convenience Pak, these Kernel releases should continue to work.

I am glad to tell you that SysInfo/2 is updated again! Nov it is at version 0.70.

Changes in this version are:
- Some corrections on "Network" page in choosing your Internet/Intranet LAN adapters installed in your system (LAN0-:-LAN7).

- Add new video devices found in SDD Beta 35 to Video adapter and video memory identification algorithm.

- Added CPU/FPU Benchmarks, based on public algorithms (DhryStote & FLOPS). The results shown are normalized to typical Intel Pentium 166MMX + EDO RAM performance.

- Added File System IO BenchMarks that analize your file system performance. The results are shown in KBytes per second for reading and writing tests. Thouse tests are launched 2 times - first using internal file system cache and next - without any caching.

Note:
This is a very first release of CPU/FPU ~FileIO BenchMarks. So, please, don`t be too hard on them. ;-))

For now you can download SysInfo/2 ver. 0.70 from the project home page:

http://os2.ru/projects/sysinfo/indexeng.shtml

And next it will be posted on Hobbes.

I am interested in your bench result and comments, so all your reports are kindly welcome.

As you know, there are a lot of applications that have been ported to OS/2 from unix. Most of them require emxrt (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=emxrt.zip) to operate. emxrt is a set of DLLs that contain the most used in unix functions compiled under OS/2 with gcc v2.8

gcc 2.8 is a great C compiler, but there is also another C compiler, named pgcc. It is nothing but pentium-optimized version of gcc plus some advantages, because it is based on more recent version of gcc (2.9.3).

Due to these advantages we switched our compilers to pgcc some time ago. For most users who are using our ports of different software originally developed for unix, it means that they required to find and to install some additional dlls. For example, from this location:

http://teamos2.ru/en,download,dlls$html

Note, that the TNEF application as well as PXTOOLS and maybe some other applications already require these DLLs.

So, if in the future you try to run our ports and get messages like 'system cannot find gcc29166' (sys1804), you need to download and to install these additional DLLs:

http://teamos2.ru/en,download,dlls$html

Thank you for your attention. Feel free to contact us by e-mail:

mailto:mail@teamos2.ru

Don't forget to check our site at:

F/X Communications in conjunction with Nortel Networks' Contivity VPN Switch now offers enterprises a VPN solution for OS/2-based clients.

More info on:

http://www.fx.dk/fxnews.html

The InJoy OS/2 connectivity products now support integrated IPSec client software which interoperates with the Contivity VPN Switch Release 2.6 and later. This enables OS/2 users to securely connect across the Internet and take advantage of contivity's VPN services.

"This is excellent news for enterprises relying on OS/2 as part of their network", said Jonathan Lewis, Nortel Networks contivity Product Manager.

Mr. Lewis continues, "The InJoy product enables Contivity to extend its IPSec client support beyond the traditional base of MS-Windows users, allowing a larger community of users to benefit from Contivity's VPN capabilties."

Notice that the Nortel CES must be specifically configured to support third party IPSec clients, so Nortel switch configuration is required for a successful configuration. New (soon to be released) InJoy and IPSec software is also required.

How to enlarge free region in <512MB arena on Warp4 FP13+ or WSeB
1. Simply add "DLLBASING=OFF" to your CONFIG.SYS. 2. Reboot.

By default, each DLL will attempt to place itself at its proposal base virtual address. If cannot, loaded in shared address region somewhere, with fitness in size. Typically, normal DLLs have base virtual address of 0 or 0x10000, unplacable due to existance of process code, then 1st attempt will fail. But some system-related DLLs such as DOSCALL1 or PMMERGE, these often have unique predefined base address, that will cause sparse usage of shared address region.

"DLLBASING=OFF" prohibits 1st attempt, will bring efficient virtual address usage in result.

Major side effects are unknown :) (debugging obstruction, possibly)

For all who still use the version from Hobbes, there is an updated package on the author's home page. On the site it says AWGet was updated on on 14/10/2000, but the most recent files in the archive are dated January.

Maybe interesting, anyway.
