Philadelphia OS/2 Mtg: Wed, Nov 28th
The Philadelphia OS/2 User Group invites all interested computer users to
attend the November monthly meeting:
. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2001 7:00 - 10:00 PM
. The Episcopal Academy, 376 N. Latches Lane, Merion, PA
. *** NOVEMBER 28th FEATURE PRESENTATION ***
. -- Manipulating & Organizing Scanned Material --
During the past year or two, greatly reduced prices for scanners have made
them most affordable. And consequently, scanners have become very popular
products in the small business and consumer markets, for OS/2 as well as
Windows platforms.
In the last 5 years, Philadelphia OS/2 UG member Vadim Kavalerov has
scanned tens of thousands of pages, exclusively on OS/2. He has
accumulated several applications proved useful for different aspects of
scanning, preprocessing and organizing images, mostly black-and-white text
documents.
At the November meeting, Vadim will demonstrate the following applications
using an HP6350 color scanner:
CopyShop: An easy-to-use control panel for a scanner, printer, and fax
software (FaxWorks).
Applause: A very fast viewer.
ReView: A document manager with built-in document database.
It's most valuable in editing large multi-page documents.
JView: An amazing shareware image editing software that has
a powerful REXX API that lets you write simple programs for
automating routine repetitive tasks.
ColorWorks: A heavy-weight image processor, mostly useful for advanced
tasks on color images.
BatchOCR: Can convert hundreds of pages of scanned text into
text documents completely automatically that is useful for
storing them into a database.
Some of the above applications, despite being useful and of good quality,
have been abandoned by their publishers. STI is one of the few remaining
strongholds of OS/2 scanning software. Visit STI's website to view their
products: http://www.stiscan.com.
Larry Lavins will also discuss the use of PMSANE/SANE for use with his
UMAX Astra 1220S SCSI scanner.
Other agenda items, as time permits, include U/G business items, OS/2
news, Q&A session, new releases and raffles. The usual free refreshments
will also be available.
Mark the date and time: Wednesday, November 28th, at 7:00pm.
OS/2 meetings are open and free for OS/2 users, their guests
and others interested in learning about OS/2 and associated
technologies. We have a very full agenda, so also please try
to be on time promptly by 7:00pm.

Larry Lavins SCOUG Meeting Nov. 17 The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) will
be this Saturday, November 17, 2001 at 9:00 AM PST, at Regal Lanes in
Orange, 1485 N. Tustin Ave. Jerry Rash Plays the Shell Game Our own Mr. Multimedia has yet another avocation. He collects GUI shells.
This month Jerry is going to show us what he's found. If you are already
growing tired of the eComStation eye-candy shell or the bland Warp 4
shell, he's going to show you that you have more choices than you know. Check the SCOUG web site (http://www.scoug.com) for further updates.
You'll always find the latest news and articles of interest to OS/2 users
there. OS/2 Help Desk and Networking SIG, December 2nd, 2 PM PST, Chapman
University in Orange: Need help? What should you do when an installation doesn't go right, or you can't get
something to work the way it should? First, ask for help on SCOUG-Help, our mailing list to help each other
over the bumps we all encounter. Instructions for signing up are at http://www.scoug.com/help/helpnow.html. If it's Wednesday evening, join in on the Help Desk chat and see what
ideas others might have about your problem. It's at 7 PM PST; info about
chats are at http://www.scoug.com/chat/index.html. Should you still be in need, take your problem - and your system - to the
in-person OS/2 Help Desk that's held once a month. While you're at the in-person Help Desk, you ought to find out what the
Networking SIG is doing. If networking isn't part of your current
strategy, it will be eventually. The SIG meets at the same time and
place, and pursues issues related to network configurations and problem
solutions. How to get to Regal Lanes: From the 55 freeway, exit Katella Ave. heading west. Turn right (north)
at the first major intersection onto Tustin Ave. At the next signal
you'll find Regal Lanes on your right. It's across from the Toyota of
Orange dealership. There's lots of parking on the south side of the building. Enter from the
east entrance of the building (farthest from Tustin Ave.), not the main
(front) entrance to the facility. Take the stairs to the 2nd floor;
meeting rooms (and restrooms) will be on your left. Handicapped access is via an elevator by the front door. OR: Go to http://www.scoug.com/directions.html; there is a map to Regal
Lanes, plus a more detailed map & driving directions from Yahoo! How to get to Chapman University: You can park in any of the University lots for free on Sundays, but if you
part on the street, watch the signs carefully or else risk getting a
parking ticket. Come to Hashinger Hall Science Building, room 203. It's on the second
floor and there's an elevator for you to bring up your equipment. Come and join us! VOICE meeting Monday 11/5/2001 On Monday, November 5th, we will have a VOICE meeting on IRC at 8PM EST
(01:00 GMT). Everyone is invited. All you need to attend is some time
and an IRC client, as all our meetings take place on the internet. No
travel required. :-) The main topic for this meeting will be on VOICE Speakup events. Who
should we invite next? What topics would people like to see covered?
We'd like to hear your suggestions. So please join us in the #voice channel on the WEBBnet IRC network. For
more on VOICE meetings and IRC clients please see the VOICE Meeting
Information page - http://www.os2voice.org/meetinginfo.html
