SW: SAMBA Client beta for OS/2 and eCS

16 Mar 2004 08:25:00

From: OS2World.com < http://www.os2world.com >

Hi OS/2 and eCS community!

We are proud to announce the first public beta version of SAMBA Client for
OS/2 and eCS. It is available as a plugin for NetDrive Filesystem and it
allows you to mount SMB or CIFS shares on OS/2 without the need of NetBIOS
(IBM LAN Manager or IBM Peer).

Samba is freely available under the GNU General Public License. You can
download the full OS/2 sourcecode including NetDrive plugin from our CVS
respository.

Samba for OS/2 is just possible because netlabs.org hired nickk for
porting it. For us this is also an experiment and we really hope that the
OS/2 and eCS community honors this effort. Please read our document about
our open source philosophy and support us with sponsoring units if you can
afford it.

We plan to provide a SAMBA Server for OS/2 and eCS as well but this highly
depends on the support of the OS/2 and eCS community. We cannot afford
that alone.

Homepage of the project: < http://samba.netlabs.org/ >
A few words about sponsoring at netlabs.org:

Please read the homepage for more details and for questions about support,
do *not* mail me directly! Thanks.

Enjoy!

SW: Eclipse status

15 Mar 2004 21:53:53

From: < http://www.os2world.com >

2004-03-15 11:03:34 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [< http://eclipseos2.netlabs.org/ >]

Eclipse for OS/2 is a transitional project on porting the Eclipse
platform, an open extensible Java IDE, to the OS/2 operating system. The
project has the "transitional" status because we are planning to join the
main stream of the Eclipse development when we complete the greater part
of this work and get a functioning OS/2 version.

What's new: Font support is fully implemented. This means that the
org.eclipse.swt.graphics.GC class is completely done and all "low level"
SWT functionality is now available (i.e., graphic primitives, colors,
images and fonts), which is definitely more than 2/3 of the whole work. I
guess that's good news.

However, it seems that we will not get through in a month with all the
other stuff (widgets). So, the project finish date will be moved again --
we hope not so far.

HW: Tim's Warped Bargains: Epson C84 Inkjet Printer Under $60

15 Mar 2004 20:23:51

From: Timothy Sipples

Dear Bargain Hunters,

Note: This deal expires on March 31st, possibly sooner.

OK, this deal is a little bit complicated, so bear with me. You'll need
to do a little bit of online work to get the price down.

The Epson C84 inkjet printer is quite nice. It works great with
eComStation and OS/2 Warp. (Use the Epson C80 driver.) It's also a good
match for alternative operating systems such as Linux. Supplies are
relatively inexpensive, too, and you can get cartridge refills if you
want. The C84 has both parallel and USB ports for good connectivity
options.

Normally this printer is around $100. However, you can reduce that price
to less than $60 or so with free shipping at Staples.com. Here are the
various cost-reducing steps:

- Start by visting FatCash.com and follow the links into Staples.com from
there. (Sign up if you're not a member.) You'll get an extra 3% rebate.

- Add some paper clips (or something else very inexpensive) to get your
shopping cart to at least $100.

- Use coupon code 34704 to get $20 off a $100 order at checkout.

- After ordering, use this $20 manufacturer rebate:

(It's at the bottom. You can also get to it from the Staples.com web page
for the printer.)

Do all that and you have an Epson C84 delivered to your door for about
$57.
Not bad.

I have no afilliation with any of these companies, although I just might
be ordering one of these printers.

Net: Tim's Warped Bargains: Filing Your U.S. Income Tax Return

15 Mar 2004 16:41:20

From: Timothy Sipples

Dear Bargain Hunters,

I just filled out my U.S. federal income tax forms last night. I've
always used paper -- call me old fashioned -- but this year I thought I'd
try the online version.

< http://www.TaxAct.com > works well with eComStation and OS/2 Warp (and the
Mozilla family of browsers). Although the web site nags you a bit to buy
the $7.95 or the $9.95 online upgrades, the free version works just fine,
too. (That's what I used.) They also offer the option (for a fee) to
generate your state income tax return, but I skipped that and just went
directly to my state's own web site to file for free. TaxAct.com even
told me whether I could contribute (and how much) to IRAs if I wanted.

Kudos to the various vendors for cross-platform web sites. All I needed
at the end was an Adobe Acrobat (PDF) viewer, and both Ghostscript/GSView
and Innotek's kit work fine for that. Turn off Mozilla's pop-up blocker
while you use the web site. (Or add TaxAct to the exception list.)

I never seem to get a refund, though. (No penalties either.) I guess
that's good in a way, since the government isn't earning the interest.

Now that I've filled out my tax forms using the online process, I'm not
sure whether it's any better or not. Possibly a bit more enjoyable
(because of the novelty), and the online version does some mathematical
checks that might be helpful. It worked, and it worked with my favorite
operating system. So does paper, though.

Either way, may your refund be large. Because your kids and grandkids
will need it to pay off the burgeoning national debt. :-)

JFTP integrates the most widely used and widely accepted security
mechanism, SSL (Secured Sockets Layer), to securely transfer your
business critical and sensitive data.
