[WarpCast] Translation of CHIP OS/2 story - 12/07/97 |
------------------------------ WarpCast ------------------------------ Sources: Holger Veit, Ulf Jaehrig Reply-to: veit@borneo.gmd.de, ulf@blackmoon.mannheim-netz.de --- Holger and Ulf both wrote in to give us a translation of the German article recently mentioned on WarpCast (http://www.os2ss.com/warpcast/wc484.html). Appearing in CHIP, a major German computer magazine, the article read something like this: *** IBM: OS/2 will be renamed The end of OS/2 has come - but for the name only. The operating system itself is well, without changes. During the repositioning process from the end user market into the server market, OS/2 had lost public attention. At Comdex, the new CEO of IBM Germany, Christoph Rau, said in an exclusive interview with CHIP that a new name should lend new life to OS/2. The next version 5 of OS/2 Warp Server will be called "NC Server". Furthermore, CHIP discovered that the major new feature is going to be an entirely new file system, the "journaled file system" (JFS). This way, OS/2 is again one step before NT, whose new object file system is still not in sight. A new version of the OS/2 client is going to follow at the end of next year. *** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To subscribe, unsubscribe, or for more information on WarpCast, visit: http://www.warpcast.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------
