You've heard mention of various things about RC5-56 and RC5-64. Perhaps you even remember hearing about DESCHALL. Well, RSA has announced a new set of contests called DES II with the objective of not only cracking DES (we've already done that once), but cracking it really fast. Twice a year they will issue a new DES contest with prize money (up to $10,000) being awarded based on the previous record for finding the key. The last time the challenge was solved in 140 days, and in order to win the full $10,000 it must be found in 22 days. That's not much time, so we're going to need all the help we can get, and the contest started at 9am PST on January 13th. In other words, we need all the help we can get to drop DES in under a month. For those running the distributed.net RC5 client it's a simple upgrade to the new RC5/DES II Dual Core Client. The new client should be able to handle whichever contest is currently under way allowing for future DES II contests to be easily handled without any changes. For those new to the effort there is information on the Team Warped web page about using the OS/2 client: http://www.ionet.net/~colin/rc5.html Information about the distributed.net effort at: http://www.distributed.net/des/ And information about the contest itself from RSA's page: http://www.rsa.com/rsalabs/des2/ -- Colin L.
