OS/2 will play a part in the world's nuclear fusion program. For those who do not know, fusion (as opposed to today's fission reactors) is a relativly safe method of extracting nuclear energy. In the fusion reactor, superconducting magnets generate a 6 Tesla magnetic field that contains and levitates a torus of fusion plasma hotter than the surface of the sun. Tritium and deuterium are injected into the plasma at a rate of 300 km/second and are reacted with the plasma using a high power laser. Unlike the current fission reactors, fusion reactors cannot achieve a runaway condition and are therefore inherently safer. OS/2 Warp 4 (a trimmed down version), is the operating system controlling a Duct Vehicle Maintenance System, designed to unbolt and remove the cryostat closure plate, deploy sections of radial rail, unbolt, cut and remove the vacuum vessel closure plate, and deploy a second rail section to access the divertor cassette. The duct vehicle system consists of a vehicle, a manipulator, a rail handler and tools. OS/2 running on two computers, provides the fail safe real time control and monitoring on one machine, and the real-time operator interface and virtual 3D display on another. The vehicle system is currently being installed in the ITER test reactor in Brasimone Italy.
