IBM staff told him in no uncertain terms that there are no plans for an OS/2 version of Navigator v4.0 produced by IBM. ------- askIBM's message begins ------- Date: Friday, 13-Feb-98 10:52 AM From: Askibm \ Internet: (askibm@vnet.ibm.com) To: news@os2ezine.com Subject: [WarpCast] Internet Message IBM-CALLOWN INTERNET RESPONSE FACILITY To......: dccj77c@prodigy.com Subject.: NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR 4 FOR OS/2 WARP 4 Dear Mr. Ferlauto, Thank you for contacting IBM. I think that there may have been some confusion with this issue. The release which was announced to be available in the first quarter of 1998 is the 're-tooled' 2.02. This is actually available currently at the following URL: http://www.software.ibm.com/os/warp/netscape/ In regards to 4.0, there are no current plans for it's release for OS/2. A major reason for this is the impending move by Netscape to make the source code available for free. If there is anything else that we might be able to assist you with, please do contact askIBM again. Thank you for using the IBM Electronic Response System. Frank (f.T.) Cooke (ASKIBM@vnet.ibm.com) IBM Internet Support Group 1-800-IBM-4YOU ------- FORWARD, askIBM message ends ------- When WarpCast tried to confirm this with staff at Netscape Communications, we found out something completely different. Staff at Netscape couldn't explain askIBM's remarks; they made quite clear to us, however, that work on Netscape Communicator version 4 for OS/2 is STILL ongoing, and the project is still being worked on by BOTH Netscape and IBM. If there were "no plans" to release the product, we can't see a reason why the Netscape/IBM team would still be working on it. Since they are still working on it, it indicates to us that there are still plans to release it. It appears that askIBM has received some bad info. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To subscribe, unsubscribe, or for more information on WarpCast, visit: http://www.warpcast.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------
