For the past several months, I've been attempting to
specify and implement a standard for a freeware Serial Port
Interface for the Java development language, and I'm
pleased to announce that work on development for the
initial target platform, OS/2, is progressing quite
rapidly!

A preliminary beta of the API has been posted to my
webpage at http://yaztromo.idirect.com/java-serial.html,
with work on the native code portion of the project for
OS/2 to be completed by the end of the month. If any OS/2
users out there with experience in Java and serial port
programming are interested, I'd appreciate it if you could
look over my design, and let me know what you like and
dislike about it.

I'm also interested in anybody who might be interested in
helping this freeware project along by writing native code
handlers for other operating systems.

If you are interested in helping with this freeware
project, please visit the project homepage at
http://yaztromo.idirect.com/java-serial.html, E-Mail myself
at yaztromo@idirect.com, or subscribe to the project E-Mail
list by sending a message to j-serial@yaztromo.idirect.com
with the word "subscribe" as the subject.

Thanks in advance for your interest in this project!
Your help could make a variety of cross-platform device
communications a reality!

Brad Barclay,
Project Administrator.
