JAVA scores
The European standardization-organization, DVB
(Digital Video Broadcasting) has elected JAVA as
standard for EU:s digital-TV. It's about 150 million
households in EU, with TV. The market it opens for
is etimated to billions per year.

JAVA will be used for developing the software. It
means all sorts of services, e-mail, web,
TV-commercials, bank services and e-commerse.
DVB has decided that JAVA will be the
program-platform and a new DVB JAVA-platform will be
developed. The purpose is to adapt Sun's Personal
JAVA for Europe's digital TV standard. This is for
signals, payment-TV systems and task like chose
channels. The new standard is supposed to be ready
in 1999, with JAVA-enabled products on the market in
2000.

DVB has over 200 organizations in home-electronics,
TV-stations, net operators and so on.

Personal note:
Any company who has committed to 100%-pure JAVA will
probably benefit from this, like IBM who put JAVA in
all their operating systems. Innoval has a really
good opportunity with JStreetMailer on the digital
TV market.

Developers who want to make applications for this
market have an excellent, inexpensive platform in
X86, OS/2 and VisualAge for JAVA.

OS/2 will soon have JAVA 1.1.7, the beta of 1.1.7
has been benchmarket to one of the fastest on X86. A
new VisualAge is about to be released, NetScape
Communicator probably at the end of the month.

More about OS/2, A new release of WSOD and something
new called Orion will be released 27-28 October
(worldwide) and of course Aurora early next year.
Something called "Aurora ClientPak" seems also to be
under development.

Sun and IBM is also working on JAVA-OS.
Personally, as a European soon surrounded by JAVA,
I will start taking courses in JAVA-programming and
upgrade my VisualAge/2 for JAVA.
