(dgwhiz@earthling.net) Moderator: Dirk Terrell (admin@os2ss.com) ********************************************************************** Subjects: IACT's Quarterly Newsletter Issue #4 + New `24x7 Report` on Windows NT + Update on our `Testimonial Project` Two weeks late but twice as good, our autumn Issue #4 of the IQ Newsletter is packed with plenty of food-for-thought. As always, the IQ Newsletter offers you original, one-of-a-kind articles-- you won't find resources like these anywhere but at IACT. Issue #4 topics --------------- * an MIS memo on how an uninformed decision to switch to Windows NT may negatively affect maintenance and labor costs, Y2K compliance plus the stability of the business network; * a first-hand account of the BeOS's many advantages, e.g. multimedia, emulation and programming capabilities; * an OS/2 user + software developer explores widespread dissatisfaction with IBM, and offers a plan to replace IBM's OS/2 with a free equivalent, perhaps modeled upon Linux; * IACT's first bilingual posting, in Arabic and English, on using Arabic character sets/fonts + software on our PCs and the Internet; * a look at IACT's first year and the next, covering the past + future of Windows, Y2K, software laws and the big picture of anti-monopoly battles beyond the desktop PC. `24x7 Report` on Windows NT --------------------------- Are you facing the decision to accept or reject Windows NT? Then be sure to see IACT's new 24x7 Report, "Windows NT and Real-Time Applications: Solution, or Problem?" This insightful technical paper was contributed by IACT member John Drabik, and focuses on NT's interface, architecture, use of hardware resources and its ongoing problems in those areas. Important issues discussed include Java, interoperability, security, TCP/IP and other major standards, and responsiveness to programmers as well as users. To read the IQ Newsletter and the 24x7 Reports, use the hyperlinks on our website's Cover Page, at http://pages.cthome.net/iact/ Testimonial Project Update -------------------------- We've just posted our first small batch of testimonials on the "Microsoft-only" bias that affects all of us who rely upon computers. We need your help-- so grab your copy of the Directions and send in your own testimonials for posting at our site! For details on IACTion Project 2, please visit the `Connections` section of our website at http://pages.cthome.net/iact/iact-tell.html IACT Chapters Update -------------------- After a couple of months of delaying this, the 2 European Chapters are now officially closed and dissolved due to logistical and structural reasons. Although the individual key members of each Chapter are still indeed members of IACT, all projects started by their Chapter are terminated. IACT-Deutschland's webmaster Marcus Specht, busy with plans for Warpstock Europe in December, promptly took their Chapter web pages off-line several days ago. At this posting, IACT-Italia's own Chapter homepage hadn't yet been taken off-line, but we expect them to do that soon and to amend their legal Complaint that they filed under IACT's name. With all of us in IACT sharing common goals, such as strong opposition to Microsoft and its monopoly, it's possible that IACT may use Internet links and postings to support an amended Complaint, if one is filed. However, as a volunteer organization focusing on education and outreach, IACT has no lawsuits pending against Microsoft in Europe nor elsewhere. If you have any questions, please visit our site's section on IACT chapters, at http://pages.cthome.net/iact/iact-chapters.html. As our members and supporters know, we are an Internet-based organization, simply relying on a grass-roots approach to promote our cause for more open standards, freedom of choice and better access to compatible technology. We will continue offering the Internet community more articles, information and projects through our one original website, at http://pages.cthome.net/iact/, and no other websites or sources represent IACT. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To subscribe, unsubscribe, or for more information on WarpCast, visit: http://www.warpcast.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------
