We're going to talk about the new bandwidth choice that has come to town. Fredjoseph Goldner, President and CEO of BlueStar Communications http://www.bluestar.net/ is going to talk about the range of services that BlueStar Communications has available. However, we will especially focus on the ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) service that they are the first to offer in Middle Tennessee. How bandwidth choices compare: Regular modem Dialup Up -- 300 bps up to 56 Kbps ISDN -- Integrated Services Digital Network: 64 Kbps if using 1 B channel or 128 Kbps when using 2 B channels Cable Modem -- Downloads (top speed 10 Mbps) usual 5 to 6 Mpds Uploads top speed 768 Kbps T1 -- 1.5 Mbps ADSL -- Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line: Modems attached to twisted pair copper wiring that transmit from 1.5 Mbps to 9 Mbps downstream (to the subscriber)and from 16 kbps to 800 kbps upstream, depending on line distance. T3 -- 45 Mbps By the way - if you want to see an excellent glossary of DSL/Networking/Telephone terms go to http://www.bluestar.net/custserv.html Other things that we we may talk about and look at during our November meeting: Following our look at ADSL and Bandwidth we will continue with Networking basics (Part 2) finishing up the program that we started at our October meeting. Networking basics (Part 2) - With OS/2, how simple (or hard) can it be to hook two computers together. What's needed? How to put it together? Getting the machines to talk to each other? These are some of the things we will be discussing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To subscribe, unsubscribe, or for more information on WarpCast, visit: http://www.warpcast.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------
