Wright (wrightc@dtcweb.com) ********************************************************************** ============================== IACT Discovery Project Time to Sign Action Letter #3! ============================== DATE: 13th Jan 1999 TO: Users of all major platforms and the Internet Please hurry to join IACT's new Action Letter project, and add your name to the 450+ current signatures from Internet users around the world. No matter what platform or browser you use, you'll want to support this project if you care about the public's right to access a truly free and open Internet. Action Letter #3 began when we made some unpleasant discoveries about the Internet-based 'Discovery' service owned by AltaVista and its parent company, Compaq. Although Discovery is promoted as a "public" and "free" service to the entire Internet community, many computer users are denied access to it because it does *not* use platform-independent formats that would be compatible with any browser and any Operating System of our choice. AltaVista/Compaq designed Discovery to work only with Win95/98 and NT! Therefore, all of us who have chosen Linux, OS/2, MacOS, DOS, BSD, Solaris, BeOS, NeXT, Rhapsody etc.-- instead of Microsoft Windows-- will find out first-hand that Discovery is unfortunately a closed and proprietary on-line service requiring the public to use one single brand of software. On behalf of all Internet users who oppose such restrictions, IACT is collecting signatures to add to our new Action Letter! Please join this worthwhile effort, and take a moment to read Action Letter #3, in the "Connections" section of our website at http://pages.cthome.net/iact/iact-tell.html Then "sign on" to the Action Letter with us! [Follow the Steps given below to sign-on.] The deadline is Monday, January 25th 1999, less than 2 weeks from today. If you haven't already, please e-mail your signature now and add your name to the Letter, along with hundreds of people representing a wide variety of OSs, professions, nationalities, experiences.... The wide response we've gotten so far is due to the efforts of our members and supporters, who forwarded copies of the original Invitation along with IACT's website address. And this project is still rolling forward! You can help us to reach more people by e-mailing or faxing a copy of this Announcement to your friends, colleagues and favorite computer-oriented websites and discussion lists. At IACT's web page, you may download your copy of a second, separate "FYI" type of message better suited for sending to your gov. officials, ISP and Internet-related companies with which you do business. ----------------------------- How to sign the Action Letter ----------------------------- STEPS 1-2-3 {1} Reply to me at this address (dgwhiz@earthling.net).
