I wondered if this type of hardware would ever be supported by OS/2.

Well, it is!. You can now have high-quality sound _without_ a sound card 
by purchasing just a set of USB speakers that convert digital audio 
data sent over the usb bus to analog sound. 

IBM quietly (as usual) released drivers for USB "Digital Speakers".

The drivers are available at:
