Web Wombat, Australia's premier search
engine, is preparing to commission a new
global engine with more than 4 million US
pages (.com, .gov, .edu, .org) running under
OS/2 Aurora (OS/2 Warp Server for
e-business).

Located at http://global.webwombat.com.au/
the new engine makes use of Aurora's ability
to allocate upto 2 Gigs of virtual memory
which can be shared among several CPUs. It's
estimated that the Aurora server based
engine will be able to serve in excess of 20
million pages at a hit rate well in excess
of 100,000 hits per hour with room to
expand.

The overall capacity of the engine has also
been increased thanks to enhancements made
to the implementation of OS/2's TCP/IP
stack.

A recent survey found that Web Wombat
accounts for 14% of Australia's portal
traffic. This rate is expected to more than
double as the new engine comes out of beta
testing and is handed over from Program
Development Systems, the engine developers,
to Web Wombat in time for the Sydney 2000
olympics.

Web Wombat's Australia specific engine
located at http://www,webwombat.com.au/
currently runs OS/2 sustaining a hit rate of
300,000 hits per day with peaks of just
under 40,000 hits per hour.

Web Wombat's expanded communications links
(provided by Telstra Corporation) are
expected to see more than 10 million new
pages added to the database in record
breaking time.

The scanning robot's backend database is
powered IBM's DB2 universal with the online
engine running the Programs Development
Systems' proprietry high performance text
database system.
